Per Twitter: Narduzzi (DC) To Stay at MSU

Submitted by Fhshockey112002 on

Per multiple twitter accounts, it seems MSU Defensive Coordinator  Pat Narduzzi will stay at MSU.  He had interviewed with Texas A&M for the same postion earlier this week.

Edit 2: Was rumored to be offered $600,000 to $750,000 at Texas A&M where at MSU his current salary (prior to expected raise) is $240,000

"With the success we've had as a football program, especially the last two years, people around the country have taken notice. So when provided a professional opportunity like Texas A&M, I owed it to my family to investigate it because my first obligation is to take care of my wife and children. The bottom line remains; however, that I'm very comfortable working for Mark Dantonio and Michigan State. The support from the top down is tremendous. Coach Dantonio, Athletics Director Mark Hollis, President (Lou Anna) Simon and our Board of Trustees have been very supportive and understanding as I've gone through this decision-making process, and I'm thankful for their patience.
"I share the same feelings that our players and coaches have that there's some unfinished business to take care of here. We're all driven to win the Big Ten Championship and win a Rose Bowl."

Good for State I guess.

Makes sense. Why make a lateral move when you've got a good gig. He puts together a few more good seasons he could get a good HC job someday. Shame but understandable.

I really don't think losing him or keeping him would have been that big a deal.  I mean, I wouldn't mind him leaving because any disruption in continuity for them is fine by me, but Dantonio was an NC winning DC as Ohio, so he's got the credentials himself.  Plus, before the start of last year, the MSU fans were about an inch away from lynching the guy due to the poor D play.

Personally, I think him leaving would have been a mistake for him professionally.  He's got a good D coming back next year and continuity.  Keep it up for one more year, and he's looking at a good HC position being offered to him.  Going to a new school in a different conference where he has to learn new opponents really might set him back a few years.  Although if he did strike it big in the SEC, he could skip the whole MAC HC job and pull a Muschamp and get a big time HC gig the first go around.

Serious question here. If MSU ever loses a game to UM, does that mean they're "little bro" again? Conversely, if MSU beats UM again next year (making it 5 in a row), is it just "one more year until they're little bro again"?

And don't give me those shenanigans about the all time record. Yes, we concede you were better before World War II, but this is the modern era of college football.

Little Brother isn't about winning or losing, it's about cheering more for Michigan to lose than for State to win. It's about trolling Michigan boards with a name like "DenardsThirdHeisman". It's about cheering for Denard to get hurt or bitching about us getting a better bowl game. It's the extreme inferiority complex possessed by fans like you that are incredibly bitter over years of futility in the rivalry and overenjoying these 4 years of success.

So to ask when MSU will be little brother again, they never weren't little brother to begin with.

DenardsThirdHeisman

Not sure where you got the idea I "cheer more for Michigan to lose than for State to win". After reading some posts from the Outback Bowl game thread, I can pretty conclusively say that you folks are not exactly the benevolent elder sibling type.

As for your second point, I thought the name was clever. But how on earth does that correlate to cheering for Denard to get hurt? You're just making things up.

You always talk about MSU fans having an inferiority complex, yet you're the one who has to constantly remind yourself of your superiority/value through phrases like "Little Brother". Isn't that more the mark of an inferiority complex than contentment in the present and confidence for the future? You say I "overenjoy" four years of success; I'll be sure to remind you not to "overenjoy" it next time you beat MSU and start thumping your chest about how we're "Little Brother" and not really a rival. It's a rivalry, man. We have the right to enjoy success just as much as you do.

I'm not sure where I stated your name was corollary to cheering for Denard to get hurt? Unless my eyes are playing a devilish trick on me it appears there is one of those period things, marking the start of another point. And to deny that State fans don't cheer for Denard getting hurt, I could bring you any one of my friends that are State fans or any one of their fans in the stadium and they would say they cheered when Denard got knocked out of the game.

"Contentment in the present and confidence for the future" is quite possibly one of the most tragic understatements of this century.  Every time they hear about UM's success this year, State fans cannot help but resist saying "Yeah but we still beat you!" Or even if its not brought up, you'll see players, among others, still feel the need to comment on twitter or another medium about how they don't deserve this success, we still beat them, etc.  And may I remind you of the 6 game winning streak of ours before the current one State is enjoying. Michigan fans never bragged about that streak to the constant level of State fans in the current one.  Of course you have the right to enjoy it, but enjoy it among other State fans like we did when we enjoyed our success rather than coming to a Michigan board or making an effort to tell a Michigan fan every time you see one. When Michigan does have success in the rivalry again, you won't have to bother reminding me like you would love to, because I'll be practicing the style of celebrating that I just described, with my own friends--that are Michigan fans that enjoy the victory--rather than taking pleasure in the losing team's loss by trolling their fanbase.

You're establishing yourself to have a propensity to twist words. My WHOLE sentence said "Michigan fans never bragged about the streak TO THE CONSTANT LEVEL OF STATE FANS IN THE CURRENT ONE," my emphasis in caps. Everyone's going to brag about a victory in a rivalry, or else it wouldn't be a rivalry. But as I stated above, State fans have enjoyed Michigan's loss more than State's win, and by a lot, whereas Michigan fans celebrate the win rather than trashing State.

And as M-Wolverine above me stated, that's where Little Brother came from.

And thanks for not addressing any of the other points I said whatsoever in that rather long post, traditionally in a debate/argument setting that means you've conceded that those points are correct or don't have an adequate response to them.

UGA had one of the best defenses in the country.  They're a solid SEC team that rattled off what, 10 straight wins during the regular season?  That's not easy for anyone let alone an SEC program.  Cut them some slack.  They went out and did their jobs.

And you probably didn't see it because there was nothing to comment on.  What are you going to say to a rival that won their bowl game?  Seriously.  If OSU had beat Florida, would you be expecting them to tweet players patting them on the back?  Or if ND had won, would you expect congratulatory tweets?  Be real.

M-Wolverine

January 7th, 2012 at 6:37 PM ^

Michigan beating VT? The same things could be said. The difference is of course, that it was very much on the minds of MSU players, as the tweet proves, and Michigan players didn't give a fuck what MSU did after they had won the Sugar Bowl. Nice dodge of the question, though.

Maybe you were one of the fans holding up the sign about the Spartans.  It caught their attention, and then twitter blew up with their comments.

Action ---> Reaction.  Cause ----> Effect.

Still wondering why the hell there was a sign about MSU at the Sugar Bowl.  Got any spirited responses regarding that?

M-Wolverine

January 9th, 2012 at 12:45 PM ^

I wasn't. But I didn't mind it. Just as you said. Action->Reaction.  If MSU had just quietly gone to the Outback, and played in it, there would have been no sign at the Sugar Bowl. If they hadn't thrown a temper tantrum, solely because it was Michigan (because there wasn't a lot of complaints about Nebraska leaping over them too), no one would have even thought "ha, this'll be funny" at the Sugar Bowl. You can't say Spartan tears taste like Sugar, if there aren't a LOT of tears before the game.  So, as most things in this rivalry, like Little Brother, and Dantonio and the teams dick remarks through the season before the game was ever played, it starts with Sparty.  If they kept their mouths shut, they wouldn't keep giving us such great material.

And besides, if you can't tell the difference between a fan (and students at that) reacting, and a member of the team reacting (as an official representative of the team and school), or even worse, a player and a COACH, then I don't know what to tell you.

It's about setting arbitrary, impossible parameters for MSU fans.  It's a rivalry, but remember that any time an MSU fan talks about a rival that it's just sympotamtic of being a little brother.  Remember that anytime they mention anything about UM affairs, it's just being a little brother. Oh wait, and remember that any time they talk to a friend who went to UM, it's just being a little brother.  Did I miss anything?

Seriously, you can't just lay out whatever guidelines you fee like to justify it.  They won four straight (all 4 since those comments were made by Mike Hart), so being 4/4 is absolutely doing everything they can on the field to prove it.  As for the fans, they take grief year in and year out from Walmart fans.  OF COURSE they are riled up.  Furthermore, they are simply engaging a rivalry whether UM fans like to admit it or not.  Can't we all just recognize that a good, heated rivalry is good for BOTH schools, regardless of what happens one game per year?  As long as both sides are screaming at each other then it's a great thing for all the fans.  It keeps things interested and keeps us buying tickets.  It keeps other fans watching the games every year.  It's just good all around.

Nice to see a Spartan around who isn't a doucher.

1) I hope that I am representative of some group of U-M fans that does not care about the little brother meme. Some of us were never on board with the comment. This should not be confused with a lack of typical Michigan arrogance, however :)

2) Don't give me those shenanigans about last year's record. Yes, we concede you were better before 2012, but this is a new year of college football.

See how stupid that sounds? Anywhere one draws the line is completely arbitrary and ultimately self-serving. I think there are a couple options:

a) Correlate your self-esteem with your program's success. This leads to arbitrary dividing lines, rationalization, and inanely believing the program can do no wrong.

b) Live vicariously through the players, focusing only on the next game, thinking of the last one only as a learning tool. This is compatible with being a functional member of society.

c) Realize the whole thing is a game young people play primarily out of passion and only attach personal meaning to it when useful. This need not be a fair-weather fan; this can be the fan who turns around his own life based on his team's rise. See comparing all-time records as part of the fun; take no personal pride in the relative shittiness or glory of one's chosen program other than as a charade in the game. This is level six of Kohlberg's stages.

Best of luck with life and everything!

MGoViso,

I liked a lot of your comments and appreciate being able to level with people.  Thank you for taking the time to actually respond with a solid post like that.

LIke I said in the closing paragraph of my above post, I think the heat in this rivalry is great for both sides.  It keeps everyone passionate about the game and keeps everyone, even outsiders, interested in the affairs of both programs.  Not too many states in the US have two solid, same conference teams.  We're very fortunate to be living in MI right now (well, as college football fans if nothing else).

But my perception of MSU fans right now is that they feel they have plateaued to the same level that previous UM regimes have.  They are  bringing in solid talent and competing in the Big Ten.  Pretty consistently, too, I might add.  Coach D (like him or not) is well over .500 since he took over and they have had three 10-win seasons since 2007 iirc.  Take away the UM games for a second and realize all of the other wins they've had.  UM is just one game per year, so to be ringing up 10 and 11 win seasons speaks volumes about what he has accomplished.  Historically, UM hangs their hat on being able to win 10 games per year.  Because MSU historically hasn't done so, now that they have begun to experience that kind of success they have every reason to be as excited as the UM fanbase was about their program.

The reason that *SOME* MSU fans go over the top with being confrontational about it is because while UM was successful and MSU was in the dumps, they got sick of hearing about how bad they were from UM fans.  All the taunting, all the "you don't even matter, you're not even a rival", all the snide "Sparty No!" and "Same old Spartans" talk... that adds up and it's not pretty when Karma comes back at you.  So now that they are experiencing what UM fans used to have (and might have moving forward with Hoke), they feel the need to step up and say "Ya, what?  What were you saying for all those years??"  It's just human nature, you just have to let them be.

There are people who act like jackasses in every fan base, they just stick out a little more when it's a rival but they're not representative of everyone, just like Walmart DBs aren't representative of nice, respectful Alumni.

"Yes, we concede you were better before World War II, but this is the modern era of college football."

Starting with Biggie Munn's first season in 1947, MSU is 401-290-15.

Starting with Fritz Crisler's last season in 1947, UM is 510-200-14.

What you call "shenanigans" the rest of the reality-based world calls "fact."

Ah another sparty just following the Valenti Pied Piper and his "All of your national titles are before 1950" meme, when all of there's came before 1967, which is clearly more in the modern era....

Facts wont stop these people Don.  Like the fact that their mother is also their sister.  Like the fact that they can bash the Michigan Kinesiology degree all they want, but their's is the school which offers courses in Bowling I and Bowling II.  Also the fact that they've won or shared three Big Ten Titles in the last 30 years, and we've won or shared twelve.

They can't base their arguments on facts, otherwise they'd have no arguments.

MSU will always be little brother. Sorry. I wish it wasn't so. This is because of the reasons people have alredy said: inferiority comple; voyeuristic fascination with everything Michigan; obsession over 'little brother' tag. And of course, all time record, which you try to ignore despite the fact that our post-war record is still much better than yours and we have more conference championships than you have working brain cells.

Modern era of college football? What's more modern than the new milennium, in which you've been wildly successful to the tune of 82-67 with 1 conference title. We've gone 99-51 with 3. This period includes our worst three year stretch ever, the Appalachian State loss, and enough losses to get people to turn on Lloyd Carr. Still, it is considerably better than your record.

I know you'll say, "but, the last 4 years...". You will be absolutely right. You beat us. And your last two years have been great! But those types of stretches are old hat for us. We are used to beating you. We are used to winning championships. Stretches like those are the norm, they are expected. This is the big differece between us. We are Michigan. Success is expected. Two years is a drop in the bucket of our long and stories success.

Too recent? 90s: records not close, 5 conference championships to 1, one national championship. 80s: records a bit closer (not close), 5 conference championsips to 1. And on and on, forever.

More to the point, we are Michigan. One of the premier programs in college football. You are Michigan State, whose biggest claim to fame is being Michigan's in-state rival (and occasionally beating Notre Dame).

beachbum69

January 7th, 2012 at 5:31 PM ^

Just like I responded above with the "arbitrary measures", you cannot set those kinds of boundaries for it and just walk away.  You cannot spend DECADES taunting MSU fans as insignificant little farmers, and then laugh and say they have an inferiority complex.  Why wouldn't they?  There are a lot of years, a lot of sports seasons of degredation built up there.

You have to draw a line between appreciating the rivalry and just being a jerk to people.  Karma sucks.  There is no one to blame for them being so over the top about winning now than the UM fans that beat on them when they were down.

As long as you toss around "We are Michigan" and "Ohio", people are going to laugh at you.  Have a little respect for yourselves. You cannot claim to be such a great program and then act like you're afraid to even say "Ohio State".  And MSU doesn't "occasionally beat Notre Dame", they have beat them like a drum for a long time now.  You're failing to give credit where credit is due.  Ignorance is not always bliss.  Embrace the rivalry.  MSU is on a solid path now with Coach D's staff whether UM fans like it or not.  This rivalry should be very heated for a very long time.  We should all look forward to it.

M-Wolverine

January 7th, 2012 at 6:45 PM ^

Every time MSU would win one out of every five games it'd be 364 days of "we've surpassed Michigan" and "oh, the rivalry has turned"...Spartans were asking to be put in their place, because they treated every win like a seismic shift. The truth is, there's one marker that's not "arbitrary". All time. We're tops in wins, and own the series vs. you. And THAT won't change in our lifetimes. You have it backwards- you want to stop being treated like little brother, stop acting like little brother. No one expects you to root for U-M, but stop acting (as fans and, embarrassingly, like a program) where Michigan losing is 1A to the joy you receive after 1 MSU winning. And stop trolling Michigan websites.

Narduzzi isn't necessarily the sole reason behind MSU's recent success. I think it's attributed to their ability to recruit the top-notch defensive players in the midwest. We'll have to wait and see, now that their in-state recruiting is on a downward slope.
