TWIS??

Submitted by MAgoBLUE on
Does anyone know when we are due for Brian's first installment of TWIS? I thought the column came out on Mondays but maybe he is waiting this week due to the holiday and Miami vs. Maryland tonight. It's always been my favorite thing to read after the weekend's games are done and I'm pretty excited to see the sections on ND and Georgia.

ND boards aren't as bad as I thought they'd be, but Georgia fans are ready to burn Richt on a cross. They are in complete meltdown mode. Lose to south Carolina on Saturday and it's prolly over for Richt.

Most of my Mom's side of the family are UGA alumni or fans. They honestly thought the Boise St game was a gimme. I can't figure out their angle, other than, "this is the ESS EEE SEE". When I ask them if Central Florida is in the SEC, they revert to giving me a hard time about Coach Rodriguez. So glad my Dad raised me a Wolverine.

I mentioned in a thread earlier in the week that I thought LSU and Georgia fans would have the biggest freakout if they lost.  Some doubted the Georgia idea (poor season a year ago, underdogs in the game) but all my encounters with their fanbase basically guaranteed a meltdown was coming.

I used to frequent a bar where the owner was an older UGA fan.  I complimented the team once on winning a bowl game or finishing with 10 wins and he basically said "Any season we don't win the national championship is a failure."  He was serious.

I didn't have the heart to point out they had thus been a failure every year but one in his entire lifetime.

The issue for UGA fans isn't that they've had so much traditional success that they think national titles are their birthright. It's that for at least the past decade, Georgia has consistently been the most underachieving team in the counrty. They've watched Richt pull in top 5 recruiting classes year after year (see: his labeling this year's crop the "dream team") and watched Richt and/or inept coordinators squander that talent.

Oh, and if losing 7 straight to OSU drives us all completely insane... imagine how Georgia feels going 3-18 against Florida (their biggest rival) since 1990.

If they drop the game to Sakerlina this weekend, I don't think anything short of running the table will help Richt save his job.

Before Richt got there, Georgia hadn't won the SEC since 1982.  Since, he's won it twice in ten years (same as Florida and Auburn, more than Alabama or Tennessee, only less than LSU in that time span) and went to the title game a third time (again, same as Florida in the same span).  He's also won the Sugar Bowl twice (something they hadn't done since the 1980 season).

Every team in that league has great recruiting classes and think they should win it all every year.  Short of winning a national title, Richt couldn't do a better job at Georgia.  If that is "underachieving", then your fanbase is insane.

turned down Boise State's offer to come over to their place.  They're deathly afraid of Boise State that they're going to make them look stupid like they have done against UGA.  Boise State is now an established program that just reloads, not rebuild. Even with losing Titus Young and Austin Pettis to NFL, the WRs did a good job of making UGA secondary pay.

Boise State doesn't realize that at the end of the day, they're still Boise State.  A glorified community college with a mildly successful football program.   Schools turned them down or more appropiately, they turned down other schools cough Nebraska cough because they wanted an even series when everyone else was offering 2 for 1s.  No major BCS school is going to lose a home game to go play at Boise, who doesn't even sell out 30 something thousand.  They're victims of their own arrogance and I don't feel the least bit sorry for them when they get looked over for the NC.

who will be ranked #4.  They're better than 90% of the programs in the country right now.  They are the winningest program of 00s.  They have beaten several BCS conference champions on the road or psuedo-neutral site or at neutral site.  They're unbeaten at home.  A mildly successful football program? lol, look up their record in 00s, they're better than every single schools in the country.  They are too big for their own conference.  They're the Gonzaga/Butler/Xavier of the Non-AQ teams.

They have offerred home and home or offered a game that they can play on the road.  They've tried everything yet teams refused to play Boise State because deep down, they know that they're going to get their ass kicked.

Let's look at some data:

2011: #19 Georgia (W)

2010: #10 Virginia Tech (W); #24 Oregon State (W); #19 Nevada (L); #19 Utah (W)

2009: #16 Oregon (W); #4 TCU (W)

2008: #17 Oregon (W); #11 TCU (L)

The above lists every game Boise's played against a top-25 opponent in the last few years; evidently, they're 7-2 againt top-25 competition.  That's pretty dang good.  Reverse the result of the somewhat flukey loss to Nevada  in 2010 (missed chip shot FG, etc.), and Boise's 8-1 aginst top-25 teams--really damn good.

What's most impressive here is that a team of Boise's caliber, with no tradition to speak of, and being a hard sell to any recruit, has the record they have over consecutive years.  It's not as if they got lucky one year and put together a string of wins against elite competition.  They've consistently won games against good teams for years now.  How no one's been able to poach Chris Petersen from there mystifies me.

did they think that BSU game is a gimmie? They were the favorite to beat UGA and is ranked ahead of UGA.  Talk about delusional.  Boise State showed that they belong in the national stage.  They have beaten several BCS teams including Pac-10 Champ, Oregon, Big 12 Champ, Oklahoma, ACC Champ, VT and to name a few.

I say there's trouble, right there in River City. It starts with T and it rhymes with "P" and is stands for "Presumptuous!" Brian Kelly is indeed presumptuous. He is the employee who promises you results and then sleeps in on the morning of the big presentation.
Re-read that second sentence a few times. Can you guys figure out what he means?

He's attempting to adapt a line from that play/movie/musical The Music Man and horribly murdering it. I could explain the song in excruciating detail for those who aren't familiar, but just take my word for it that it's not going to make ND-dude's point any more cogent.

Wow that's a pretty scathing indictment of the coach after only one game. Just the type of stuff that I enjoy so much. It sucks that Brian won't be doing the column this year but whoever steps in should have a lot of material.

The loss to USF by ND at home (after a strong finish in 2010) was probably the worst game ever for the ND coaches, team, fans and ND TV viewers, because the agony was prolonged and despite the improvement under QB Tommy Rees, the team still imploded spectactularly.  There certainly have been some horrible ND losses in the past, but Kelly's rage and beet red face were thoroughly magnificent.  It'll never be quite as good as the Charlie Weis years though because Kelly isn't as arrogant and full of himself.

that I liked BK when he was at Central.  I thought he deserved to get promoted because of his success at GV and CMU.  I was happy to see him get the Cinny job and turn them around.

But when he took the ND job, I was torn.  then miscue after miscue then a death under his watch.  ND is not a big deal to me, like OSU and MSU are.  ND is a rival but third in line.  Bo didnt want to play ND because he thought they took the easy way out.

If I recall correctly, TWIS is usually on Tuesday, to give everyone a day at work to start the complaining, and to give Brian a day to put it all together. I could be wrong though, and I really hope it does not go away now that Brian stopped doing the BlogPoll.

Laughing at TWIS under my breath in class is one of the highlights of school in the fall.
