The Maryland portion is gold. I feel bad for these schools that have no chance of getting better. At least our troubles were the result of kicking ourselves in the shorts and hiring the least qualified candidates in 07 and 2011 than not actually being able to get a big name.

Yeah but it takes a lot of luck for you to find the right guy and once you have him you have to hope like hell he doesn't go to the NFL or a bigger school and be back where you started. How big of a kick in the balls would it be as an Arizona fan for RR to go to Miami. How many failed coaches has Baylor been through to get where they are today? We think 7 years of suckitude is bad at Michigan.

My point is, the big 10 continues to hire average to bad guys like kyle flood, randy edsall, tim beckman, and yes, brady hoke.

Meanwhile Chad Morris and Tom Hermann are giving SMU and Houston a much-needed shot in the arm. Duke finally hit a home run with David Cutlife. Stanford identified Jim Harbaugh before anyone else in the Power 5 did. And yes, MSU had the right idea with Dantonio. Those schools will probably promote internally and try and keep a good thing going.

Good coaches can do a heck of a lot with scarce resources. It's identifying that guy that's important.

For most schools it's a crapshoot.  Dantonio went 18-17 at Cincinnati.   And it's way too soon to know if Morris and Herman will make good head coaches.

Michigan is fortunate enough to be the kind of job that proven coaches are interested in.  We never were out of options.  In 2007 we could have had Les Miles and did land RichRod (who didn't work out here, but had a good résumé).  In 2011 we could have had Harbaugh if we wanted him, or Miles.  Finally in 2014 we stopped being stupid, went after the best guy and landed him.

Eh.  The chance of a small school getting better is non-zero.  And I bet it's a lot more tolerable when you are mediocre and you're supposed to be mediocre, as opposed to being a fan of a Michigan or Texas team in a year when they suck donkey balls.

At least when I go see the local MWC team play, there's no traffic to or from the game, the tickets are like $10, parking's free, the food is cheap, and I can stretch my legs into the empty seats in front of me.  Going to a 2014 Michigan game, my team is crap, everything is expensive, and I'm sitting in traffic on I-94 for two hours before and after the game.

"I still say the Terps should have topped Michigan's Offer to Jim Harbaugh last year

The difference a Harbaugh would have made to this program in the long run in terms of ticket sales and donors is tremendous. It'd have more than paid for the difference between his contract and Edsall's. Would he have signed? Probably not. But you make sure to offer him a million a year more than Michigan and make him turn it down. You never know, maybe he'd have liked to coach in the same state as his brother. Maybe he'd enjoy the challenge of being the first guy since the 50s to turn Maryland into a football powerhouse- he's a guy who's known to like challenges- and Maryland is at the same time a big challenge and a big ten school with two big NFL markets right near it, so it's a challenge, but not an impossible challenge (They are in a good conference, they've got a lot of football fans in the area- you convert 75% of Ravens fans and 75% of Redskins fans and Byrd would sell out every game)."

That's just beautiful stuff right there

I say I should be like Tom Brady and marry a supermodel.

The difference in my quality of life and future family would be tremendous.  The cost of having her be away from home often to pose for pictures would be clearly outweighed by being super-rich and the envy of every man and having super-beautiful children.  Winning a supermodel's heart would be a challenge, but not an impossible challenge (I may be a guy who posts on an internet message board, but it's a good message board).  I've got to do it.

I don't get the Tennessee fans pining after 70 year old Spurrier. His team squeaked by UNC and just lost to Kentucky. South Carolina very likely has the easiest schedule of any SEC team, yet they're equally as likely to start this season 2-4..

Tennessee fans are utterly desperate to win a game of relevance, because they know their program is on the verge of total "also-ran" status not worth noticing. It scares the shit out of them. We were fast approaching the same feeling until literal Harbaugh came home. I don't believe they have a coach waiting in the wings whose "manifest destiny" is to coach the Vols.

They probably want Spurrier just because they'd no longer be the butt of his jokes.  I remember Spurrier, while at Florida, being asked to comment on Tennessee's second place finish in the SEC.

Spurrier said "you can't spell "CITRUS" without "UT".   (At the time, Fulmer's Tennessee had national championship aspirations, and the fanbase hated Spurrier for this and similar quotes.)

Regarding Arkansas:

Doc told me no more alcohol
I had to watch the game while drinking O'Douls
So I don't wanna hear any more bitchin

Somebody picked the wrong week to quit drinking for medical reasons. Actually, that sort of game is a medical reason TO drink if you are a Razorbacks fan, I would imagine.

I don't think Maryland could mortgage the collective soul of its program, university, and students, and still have enough for Harbaugh to even give attention to the idea that they would've made him an offer.

The fact that someone out there thinks Maryland has the guns to compete with Michigan in terms of buying power is beyond laughable. But hey, good for you dreaming big, pal.
