Turco let go by Dallas after 9 seasons
I saw this too and I kind of had to agree with Joe that the Stars do need to go in a new direction because the playoff runs that they have had since 2000 (when they last appeared in a finals series) have not been exceptional. The last time Dallas won a cup was back in 1999 and half of those players have retired including just recently Mike Modano. Dallas does need to go in a new direction and finding better goaltending, plus defense in this years draft will help better their chances in 2011. Dallas did make an impressive run in 2008 to lose in 6 games to Detroit. Letting Turco go in my opinion my be a good move for the Stars.
Turco was generally fantastic in the playoffs for Dallas except 2004 and 2006. The problem was getting there, something he failed to do this year as well as last year.
I still remember that Dallas-Vancouver series in 2007 where Turco pitched 3 shutouts (and allowed only 11 goals in 7 games, 5 of which came in a 4OT loss in Game 1) and still lost the series.
His contract was too big for them to sign, they need help in other areas more than they need him. He will probably be picked up next year by another team but most likely not get anything more than a one or two year contract. Teams will not commit much more time or cap space to an older goalie.
They had to make the move, but i think the question for Dallas is will Kari Lehtonen ever be the guy that everyone thought he would be when he was drafted?
that being said, it was a good run for Marty in Dallas, He won a cup and was an elite goalie for many years even if he struggled a bit in the playoffs recently. He now sort of has the rep of not being able to quite get over the hump. Best of luck to him keeping our goaltending tradition going.
he did not win a cup. Ed Belfour was the starter and Roman Turek was the backup in 1999
I love Turco for everything that he did at Michigan, but it was time for Dallas to let him go. He isn't going to take a team to the promised land.
