Mayhew + Lewand = good. Seriously. The current Lions GM & Pres/salary capmeister are doing some seriously good work fitting everything together. If we load up with some quality rookies in the draft, plus hopefully healthy Leshoure and Fairley (essentially rookie additions this year), I'm feeling good about another playoff push.
So does that mean we have no more money for any other players? So a rookie or Cherilus is going to have Staffords blind side? OOOWEEEE
Say what you want about Backus but he will still be protecting Stafford's blind side.
They re-signed Backus about a week ago. Short-term deal, I'm OK with it- gives them time to draft/develop a tackle, since Chris Fox projects to RT.
1) I did not know about Backus being resigned, which I'm fine with.
2) Jason Fox you mean? By the time Chris Fox is in the draft Backus will be 40 almost.
Well, this is really gonna hurt our run defense for 5 years. I was hoping we were gonna lure the younger MLB out of Seatle for a cheaper contract.
is this going to hurt our run defense?
how do you think he amassed 160 tackles last season (with TEN), coverage?
To be honest, I didn't think there was a chance that he would be back, the market ended up playing into the leo's hand as Tulloch's landing spots seemed to dwindle everyday. With 21 of 22 starters re-signed to a playoff team they are in pretty good shape, just have to sure up some holes in the draft with a few CB's, a Peterman replacement, and another DE. It finally isn't embarrassing to admit to being a Lions fan.
I hope we sign Tim Tebow
to burst your bubble, but I already signed him to my IM team. He's going to be a project, but he should be ready for the big intercompany battles in the fall.
Correct me if i'm wrong but considering the mega contract they gave Megatron, throwing stupid money at Mario would probably have hurt the cap like no other.
Unfortunately the Lions are at that point in time when some of those older big money contracts they needed to get quality FA's to sign with them are looking like deadweight, the difference is that the GM and coach have made hella good decisions and have managed tight cap space like magicians.
but our Detroit Lions seem to be making great moves the last few years. I don't recall the last time we could say that! Making a few good draft choices is an absolute must, but wow do we have a solid team to make another playoff push.
Some people have pointed to the Lions drafting a certain position this April, but do you think they will do the "best player available" strategy again and go against the people's wishes for as long as I've been paying attention to the Lions (MOAR CBs and OL)? I wonder if being higher up in the draft will mean that the Lions hone in on need instead of adding additional talent to a position group.
I have to believe they go with a corner. It's the biggest hole on the team by far, and the one thing that held them back from a longer playoff run last year. If there is a run on the top guys, I don't think they will hesitate to trade up to get one before they're gone.
FINALLY, this team has talent and depth in most important positions, something I definitely have never thought in my lifetime.

Next season is going to be a huge SUH-cess.
Happy to have him back. I wonder how Atogwe's visit went, we could use him and a corner in the draft. That would help the defense a lot. We also need at least one addition on the O-line. Our playoff run should last longer if we take these steps, I think.
