Tulane basketball decommit considering Michigan?

Submitted by Raoul on

On today's Recruiting Roundup (toward the end), Sam Webb mentioned more or less in passing that he had heard that a basketball player who had decomitted from Tulane (after a coaching change there) was considering Michigan.

He didn't mention a name, but it could be Rakeem Brookins, a 5-foot-11 point guard from Roman Catholic H.S. in Philadelphia who was a first-team All-City selection.

Neworleans.com reported that Brookins had originally selected Tulane over "Boston University, Pennsylvania, LaSalle, Delaware, VCU and James Madison." Item also says he is "a good ball handler" with "a very good three-point shot."

Runhouse Recruiting has a brief item, updated on April 16, with a lengthy list of schools pursuing Brookins but no mention of Michigan.

A second Tulane decommit, Colton Christian, seems less likely to be the player in question. He's a 6-foot-7 power forward from Hargrave Military Academy  in Virginia.

My name ... is Tim

Are we considering him? No offense meant to either of these gentlemen, but unless Beilein was just told that Isiah Sykes isn't coming to Michigan, given our limited available scholarships, I'm not sure we'd even be offering these guys.

Just to clarify, Sam Webb said only that a Tulane decommit was "looking at Michigan" not that Michigan was considering or had offered a Tulane decommit.

For what it's worth, ESPN has Brookins graded slightly higher than Isaiah Sykes, so Michigan possibly being interested in him doesn't seem that outlandish.

Akunne was a preferred walk-on (but he was in-state). I think they'd do it, but, unless this kid is from a minted geneology, he's not going to be able to afford out-of-state tuition.

In other basketball news, watch the Marcus Thornton video from the GA basketball semi-finals over on UM Hoops. Thornton looks better than Zeigler. Listed as a three star, but clearly a four. A few majors like Texas, Kentucky, Clemson, and GA Tech are still in his mix. I guess we'll see how persuasive Calipari's Facebook messages are.
