MSU vs UK about to start the second half and Kansas and Duke to follow.
Figured we should have an open thread for these games.
Kentucky is basically a bunch of talented players with no direction at all.
Kentucky closing it up some against MSU despite several turnovers.
How far are these schedules made in advance? MSU is very smart to play a talented, but freshman-loaded team that will likely improve throughout the season and make this win (should they win) look very good.
Basketball seems to be scheduled on much shorter notice than football. Given the 4 teams that are in this showcase I would imagine that it was decided relatively recently. But i agree with your overall point
At least pre-2011. Champions Classic started in 2011 with these teams playing against each other (MSU played Duke in 11, Kansas last year). Will continue for the next 3 years, at least.
This Randall guy is pretty good
As soon as I say that he turns it over
I wonder if we'll be # 5 or # 6 next week after the losers tonight move down.
We could, although the basketball polls are weird sometimes - you sometimes see teams lose and not go down at all, if they lost to a tough opponent.
It feels like Appling has been at MSU forever.
These twins for kentucky are terrible tonight
Andrew Harrison looks awkward trying to play the point.
Very minor statistical snapshot of the Kentucky-MSU game as we type:
Kentucky effective FG% - 52.94%
Michigan State effective FG% - 57.14%
The gap slowly narrows for the time being in this one. Lots of time left though.
How do Calipari teams consistently suck at shooting free throws? Does he discourage them from practicing free throws during their work outs?
If Kentucky makes their free throws, they're in this game.
Whoa, I just saw that VCU is ranked 14th in the country. I had no idea. We may play them in PR and they'll obviously be jacked up for revenge. Could be a good test.
Iowa St. is unranked, but they are ranked 34 by Kenpom. That will be a good test as well.
VCU hits a 3 with 1.1 seconds left!
If Wiggins is obviously better than Randle like some scouts have been saying, then i feel bad for Duke next game.
"Great athlete, no way he's the top pick in the draft. Julius Randle is better. There's just way too much hype. His skill level is average. He made a few shots but plays straight up and down and doesn't have any playmaking skills. Everything has to be a straight-line drive. Right now, he's the third- or fourth-best player for Kansas. He's long and athletic but has a long way to go."
That was one scouts early assessment.
Thanks for that. I haven't followed it at all really other than the rivals rankings and the hype machine that is ESPN. From everything they say on the WWL Wiggins is the best player to come along since Durant/Lebron.
That quote is excellent though. I appreciate it.
I got it from this article.
There are more quotes from scouts.
All the pregame talk was about Wiggins being the more athletic and Parker the more skilled. But Randle put up some numbers himself.
That scout is either dumb or just extremely prone to hyperbole.
I might actually turn this game because the refs are so bad.
This is horrendous. Why not just make it a free throw shooting contest?
Welp. This game is officially unwatchable. Thanks Izzo
I think you can say Randle is feeling it
cant help but root for state.
though I will enjoy seeing jzzos tears if they lose.
Does MSU winning help our SOS?
Yes and RPI. You want all Michigan opponents to win and within Big Ten play you want double plays over single plays for the most part. Very good night for Michigan future opponents. Florida and Kentucky are nice scalps for the Big Ten.
Take that evil empire.
I think I'm rooting for sparty too, it behooves the Big Ten and I hate Callipari, also don't like the ranking this untested Kentucky team has.
only able to catch the end of the game here. Greatly conflicted, but I think I'm pulling for the BIG TEN (which by default, means MSU). I hate the UK-all-top-10-recruits approach to college basketball - and understand it's likely fair play. But damn, want to see them go down and position B1G atop college basketball.
It will mean even more when we beat them.
Oh, and Duke is a bunch of uncle toms. /Jalen'd
This Kentucky team is young and plays dumb. They'll no doubt get better but they do some stupid shit out there; Sparty on the other hand isn't as "talented" but plays much more sound basketball, experience being a big part of that.
I don't know what a foul is anymore.
Well it looks like Michigan State is gonna win....
MSU is probably better than us in football and basketball...I hate everything.
Did you just wake up from a decade long coma? Thats basically been the case since 2008
Is your friend.
At least Michigan will kick their ass in Men's gymnastics. Wait..does State have a Men's Gymnastics team?
You can look forward to us bombing their hockey team a few times this year. MSU hockey is bad right now
I think you have to foul if you're uk there. Can't let them run the clock down to 5 seconds. Even if you get a stop you're facing a frantic possession and very little time.
That Randle kid is NBA good.
Gary Harris should really rethink that hairdo.
Bobcats down only 7 to ohio.
I'd love to see Ohio beat Ohio
Down goes Frazier!
Couldn't have happened to a group of more highly touted young men. Which I just love to see.
Go B1G. Can't wait to play State (In AA... a little nervous about heading up to Lansing)
It sure seems like there was a lot of fouls in that game
Glad to see MSU win one for the B1G. They will be very tough this year...
Jalen wants "competitive jealousy" to happen so badly.
I'm glad that the Spartans won, but wow Calipari mismanaged that game at the end. Izzo gave him two chances to tell his players to foul and instead he put it on his defense to not only get a stop, but get the ball back and stop the clock in time to get a play off in what would probably be less than 4 seconds. Just stupid.
Cal did the right thing, and they got the stop...just didn't get the rebound.
Not gonna lie, MSU looks really scary.
Screw MSU. I never want them to win. I don't care about Big Ten loyalty.
Calipari made the right call in my mind. They should have stopped MSU, and 5 seconds is enough time to move the ball down and make a play or call a TO. In addition, if you foul there you are fouling a good FT shooting team and essentially asking your players to make threes. UK was shooting 22% on threes, which included numerous open threes. I wouldn't have banked on the threes.
It was the right move...just have to get a stop, and when you do, you have to get the rebound. They did part 1, but not part 2. Can't fault the coach on that one.
Beilein actually made a MUCH riskier choice not to foul vs. KU late in the sweet 16 game and J-Mo made the underrated play of the game on the stop before "The Shot."
Go Kansas. Hate Duke.
Just going off the eye test, which in basketball is a lot more predictable than football (I saw Michigan as a Elite 8/Final Four team at this point last year)...but way more, teams, upsets, etc. So it's a pointless exercise, but I need something to do while watching these games...so why now?
I'll give it a shot...
7. Wichita St.
10. Ohio St.
16. Oklahoma St.
Wisconsin and Maryland are my two teams that I wanted to include, but didn't.
This is slightly OT but has been driving me crazy for months. There is this one song that is played at Crisler that I like but have no idea what it is. It is purely a beat, last season they would play it when introducing the starting lineup. This year I have heard a few bits and pieces of it, but since it has no lyrics I have had trouble finding it. Does anyone know the song I am referring to?
Are they playing during this game? If so, I can check on my DVR...
Cause this is awful.
However, Michigan plays "We Ready" by Archie Eversole all the time...even this year they do it.
Embed doesn't seem to be working tonight...here: http://youtu.be/ZSEL_NQtW8Y
...but since I replied to my own post it won't let me edit.
...I found this as well: http://youtu.be/pkoteSncz2U
No, it was after the video intro. It was played when the lights would go dim and the PA guy would say "A 6-6 Sophomore..." and this song would be on in the background.
Glad to see sparty win. I've always had a soft spot for Tom Izzo and sparty bball. I think a lot of UM fans
Adopted them during the dark days of ellerbe and amaker. Although Izzo is tough on his guys and a little spastic on the sideline, he seems genuinely interested in making his players positive contributors to society.
I know more than a few UM grads that were pulling for the flintstones in 2000. Not to mention Calipari is satan (I.e. The Lane Kiffin of college bball.)
A real comment? Frick Tom Izzo and frick M State.
Are you joking? I would not cheer for MSU even if there was a gun to my head. Any Michigan fan who "adopted" that stupid 2000 MSU team is not a real Michigan fan.
I used to think the guy was classy but as soon as Michigan started beating him he turned into a whiny bitch
I never thought he was classy. He ran it up on us every chance he had.
Are you kidding me? This is a joke, right?
Nothing is real here anymore.
Jabari Parker ended up at Duke and not EL. That dude looked real good.
Nice night for the B1G with wins by Wisconsin and MSU over strong teams. Will certainly help the conference's RPI. Nice start to teh season.
