Simply stated. Sparty takes their injured and needing-sympathy team to Iowa City for a classic Big Ten showdown. Right now, ESPN.
There are other games but this is the best one of the night. Go Hawks.
lol at pictures in OP. Go Hawkeyes!!
That is, head and shoulders, the creepiest picture of Tom Izzo I have ever seen.
by double digits.
I think MSU wins this game.
Who do I root for so Michigan looks better?
Oh wait, Michigan beat both, it doesn't matter.
I suppose we look good either way, but an Iowa win puts us two games up on everyone in the loss column, so that's definitely what we want.
Staee is gonna need a lot more from Valentine and Trice. We held them to a combined 5 points. Iowa 78 msu 70
Pretty bland first four minutes.
I think Iowa should win this game, though it will be a tough one. I'm curious to see if they can hold Harris in check; if so that should only make an easier path for a W and two Game lead for us in the Big Ten!
BAHAHAHA Izzo must have gotten to ESPN because they just showed all of the injuries to Sparty players.
A little over exaggeration with these MSU injuries. You really have to list Trice's blisters as an injury?
Has injured players? Watch ESPN. It has to be the lead story on every basketball game played in America.
Apparently MSU is the first team in history to have injury issues, given how much pub this topic is getting.
Maybe they should just be handed the national title right now out of sympathy?
Anyone have a stream?
Thank you good sir. Comment again so I can upvote you again, you need points!
State cold from the three.
How does Appling keep shooting if his wrist hurts sooooooo bad.
As soon as I turned the game on, the very first words out of the announcer's mouth were "Dawson, Payne and Appling."
Let's just give them a Purple Heart already.
Both teams under the 40% mark for effective FG% right now, and Michigan State is coming up on five minutes without a shot going in, I think. This is starting to look like one of those games that require eyewash and beer, but knowing me, I will find the will to watch regardless. Guinness #1 is being had right now.
I get blisters from playing intramurals, ESPN doesn't talk about my coach* dealing with injuries.
*I admittedly don't have a coach, but the point still stands.
Iowa's defense looks awesome. I mean, it's only because Dawson and Payne are out, but still. They've shut down any movement and function of Sparty's offense.
Fun to see the officials calling fouls on MSU when they foul.
I didn't know Bunk Moreland was on the msu staff.
I HAVE BEEN WONDERING THE SAME THING. Wonder if McNulty will join?
What? The refs are calling fouls against MSU?
Just turned the game on. 20 to 19 with 3:40 left? Bleck. Score some points.
How does he get continuation there? He was fouled way before the shot.
Ugly basketball. MSU is struggling in some areas, but they're definitely thrilled with the pace of the game; this is their kind of game, not Iowa's kind. Bodes well for MSU late.
What's really impressive to me is that all these B1G teams seem to struggle on offense against top B1G competition. They just can't get it rolling in tough circumstances.
All these B1G teams except Michigan, that is. Even against smothering defense on Saturday Michigan was well over 1.00 ppp. That's a significant positive even compared with a year ago.
seems prepared for all the stuff State gets away with.
It's NOT WORKING.
EDIT: We're playing some weird guys right now...? Really? My tiny violin isn't tiny enough.
At least Sparty is consistent, every time they floor slap, points scored on.
Oh, shut up, Izzo.
Izzo just referred to the players he recruited as "weird guys" in the halftime interview.
Izzo needs to call in the Pope to help him heal his team.
"Hey son you wanna go play for Coach Izzo... you know the guy who if you are not in the top 8 of the rotation deems you a weird guy?"
"We had some weird guys in there.." Izzo is unbelievable. Just hilarious.
"I just shit my pants" -- Fran McCaffery
If you haven't googled Fran McCaffery, you probably should. The facial expressions are magnificent.
Izzo we know you are playing more players than normal. The reason is (everybody)......... INJURIES!
Of course, Payne and Dawson aren't weird guys because they are not out there. On the bench with critical injuries.
I don't know, a guy who punches tables and breaks his hand is pretty weird.
What a true underdog story. He should be coach of the year having to play B1G 10 ball with these crippled high schoolers...
Sounds like a 30 for 30.
Terrible excuse. A starter and a bench player got in foul trouble for both teams. I guess it's just easier to blame someone else.
have any theories as to why there's a foul & free throw disparity? Please help Tom and the reporter out. Anyone? Buehler? Buehler?
Even in a halftime interview, Izzo managed to sneak in a whine about not having his bigs. Instead, he has to play 'weird guys.' Wow.
Holy travel, Batman!
That could happen. He's pulling a Beilein
Wow, Appling looked like he was running in for a touchdown there. How is that not called?
How many steps was that? 8? Jesus
the walk called on Irvin on Saturday.
That weird guy just turned the ball over.
Most obvious travel of all time??
Had to upvote you for that D. Mo quote.
BJ; my god, the refs love him.
I read that as "BJ's. My god the refs love them."
And I thought what the hell did I miss?
Izzo seriously is losing his shit. What a tool. I think his tantrums and mental buse is wearing people out. Its getting old and worse. I think his recruiting is going to suffer when you compare him to Beilein. His half interview was so tense he is so close to going Woody hayes.
Their pipeline is dying
See this year's recruiting. He lost out on both chicago guys he went for and then complained about politics. Exploding once every 5 games is fine but doing it 40-50% of the game is cheap theater.
Dude took like 17 steps and they didn't call a travel.
LMAO this is hilarious!
One of these coaches is going to throw a chair ... I can't wait!
Woodberry blatently pushed into Appling
Weird guy Appling with the wrist severed from his body somehow hits a 3.
Awesome job by Bilas calling out the refs favoritism of Izzo over Fran. Same actions, only 1 gets tech'd.
Called out Uzis post game comment referring to it and pretty much saying Stauskus is B10s POY not Harris.
Both these coaches are just embarrassing.
Refs really keeping Sparty in this one. How is that not a fucking walk?
Dang I missed it. It always makes me laugh.
EDIT: Rewound, saw it, laughed.
Another weird guy walked with a no call.
I am scared of that one Iowa cheereader, not gonna lie. He strikes me as an Adderall taking cheerleader.
I'm afraid of Fran
They have two NBA gaurds. The refs are just preparing them for the big leagues.
Great game in Iowa City
Whine Whine Whine
Bitch bitch bitch
Was Marble ever in consideration as a UM recruit? Just remember his dad....
lol, definitely a foul on Iowa there... I'm not complaining.
My nanna at the market. He's an embarrassment.
Quick stats for MSU-Iowa:
Iowa effective FG% - 51.52%
Iowa OREB% - 30.00%
Iowa FT Rate - 60.61%
MSU effective FG% - 44.05%
MSU OREB% - 25.93%
MSU FT Rate - 19.05%
I just ate ten Oreos. Of course I used milk and then downed said milk. The Oreos consisted of five peanut butter and five birthday cake flavored.
Wow, I bet you can't eat 8 saltine crackers in 40 seconds! With no drink.
Man, I haven't had saltines in a long time. I used to eat an entire row when I was a kid.
I'm not fat, I promise.
All that bitching by Izzo paid off in a joke of a block call.
FOR FUCK'S SAKE:
@SethDavisHoops: Man those Spartans are playing with pride tonight. Short handed but not short hearted.
They're also playing with extra steps.
"Looked like a foul." Yeah, I have a theory why it looked like a foul.
For Fuck's sake, Iowa gets mauled going up for the ball and nothing?
Iowa 13/22 on free throws. My goodness.
Valentine runs very weird.
MSU getting the calls on the road. Now that's tough
Well the Big Ten bosses thought MSU should have won against Michigan, so they need to make up for that loss somehow. Clearly they instructed the refs what to do in this game.
That dumbfounded look that Fran just had was awesome.
This is ridiculous, how has Fran not been ejected yet?
Izzo threatened the officials' families at halftime.
I love how MSU's inability to recruit good players for 3 years finally biting them in the butt is "noble."
Michigan State just launching from 3 yet it's Michigan who lives and dies by it /spartylogic
Obie Trice. The rim says "NO."
If Byrd was black he'd be labeled a thug. Nonetheless, he is a thug.
out of you and figure that they won't call all of them fouls.
Just like MSU football.
It pisses me off that it works. Refs are scared of being criticized so they let them get away with it
My friend (MSU Fan) is bitching about "tick tack" fouls and free throw contest ruining college basketball. I just shook my head and laughed. They don't even realize that their strategy is foul everyplay.
This game just feels like Iowa is going to fall short. I hate that I feel like that. Please tell me I'm wrong.
You are wrong!
MSU is running out of gas!
Iowa's going to lose to a bunch of weird guys if they can't hti their free throws.
Sparty turnover...Iowa's zone is killing it.
punches someone before his career is over.
Russell Byrd is a clown and a hack.
Hoek you kept all your mgopoints for your 2500 automated posts Saturday night?? Nice
That and I got a lot of up votes.
Time to even out the fouls.
This is where Michigan pulled away.
MSU player jumps on Iowa player's back under the rim... no foul.
Does he need to draw blood?
The man is on his back! How do these refs swallow their whistles like this?
Clean block, with Denzel humping his back....
I'm losing my f'ing mind. How do you get to use a guy's back as a vault?
What a terrible no call. Come on Iowa!!
Officiating in this league is such a fucking joke.
After they show a replay of the Michigan State player all over the Iowa player's back, the announcer says, "He got it clean." These announcers are jokes.
i'm just surprised Iowa are still in this with the leg cramps and all. they are brave.
It's the Seahawks pass D and the MSU D. Just commit so many penalties that the refs won't actually call them all.
Iowa killing themselves on the foul line.
How do they not give a foul for jumping on his back?
The block was clean by the other guy. If one guy jumps on the back, but the guy who blocks the shot gets all ball, then you can't call a foul. #coachIzzoTeamD
Anyone going to watch the state of the union address? I'm not trying to start an argument, rather just wondering.
I'd rather watch my wife cut my penis off /nopolitics
Just a musing. A comms maven buddy will be tweeting incessantly about it.
OH! HARRIS BLOWS AN FT...
Iowa's shot 34 free throws and they're getting utterly jobbed by the officials. That's AMAZING.
They've gotten away with a couple, but Iowa better (make their FTs and...) deal with this because MSU has the killer instinct in full effect here. See if Ioway has anything to match it in the last moments...
Omfg, Harris runs straight into McCabe and it's on McCabe? How is that possible now?
I love Tirico but man do I hate the word ''physicality''. Is it even a word?
That was an amazing, life-affirming drive by Harris right there. He carried the hopes of every MSU player in the infirmary on his fragile shoulders.
right there. good one.
Izzo looks happy about that call.
That was all forarmball there by Harris.
Make a fucking free throw Jesus Christ.
Appling so greedy - Harris is your best player. And your right arm is severed per reports out of EL.
Good lord, Iowa. If you make your free throws, you win.
Make free throws and this game was over.
Obvious goaltend under the net. If your hand goes up through the basket it's a goaltend. Or at least it was against Michigan.
I thought the same thing. It sure looked like the rim moved when Valentine grabbed the net. But I kind of doubt that would get called in most games that late, and it wasn't egregious.
Goal tending on Valentine on that attempted tip in
God how does Basabe miss that tip. Iowa could've won this game 1000 times.
Devyn Marblecake tooke about 15 steps on that last posession.
So Iowa won by at least six in a sanely officiated game.
These teams look awful.
OT doesn't bode well for Ioway unless Harris or Appling somehow fouls out...
Michigan State basketball is a lovable underdog now?
I don't get why no one says that...
Judas Priest where did that 3 come from
again and again and again coming down the stretch. Hats off to State for tenacious play, but. . . damn, Iowa.
How do you not make a basket for over 10 minutes?
How many minutes has Harris played? Bilas makes it sound like he's an ironman; I'm guessing he's playing about average.
Pretty much the whole game... They have no choice (partly because Dawson broke his own damned hand...)
Too many "weird guys" handling the ball in that offensive set.
Wait can you get a 35 second call without slapping the floor?
His coach and his fans may be total choadbags, but I gotta respect Gary Harris' game.
Seriously, though, Iowa - how can you f. this up?
better than I thought they would after losing to us.
Izzo complaining about the toss. lol ... shocker
This is MSU's third OT game already this conference season. About time they lost one.
I know they're in the 60s, but it's like a sumo wrestling match.
How has Iowa not made an actual basket in like eleven minutes? What the actual fuck.
...with 1 second on the shot clock?
whoever was defending appling on that 3 totally gave up instead of putting a hand in his face. What a stupid play
Well Appling's wrist seems to have healed quickly.
He is a warrior.
SO the 2015 MSU squad will be Dawson + 7 Weird guys.
Iowa is not shooting FTs well. 27-40(!!) good for 0.675
MAKE YOUR FREE THROWS!
Your stache sucks.
27 out if 40 free throws. My God.
The halfcourt line is invisible...
Anyone's TV signal cutting out sporadically?
LMFAO backcourt on morgan but no call on that. HALOL
Nice pass by Valentine. wow
When Michian plays Iowa again they better foul the Hawkeyes on every possesion. We'll end up winnning 75-16
God dammit Iowa.
No one deserves to win this MSU-Iowa game.
Iowa deserves to lose.
Michigan State didn't win.
Michigan State didn't win.
Iowa sucks. 40 free throws and they will still lose at home.
How do you miss every FG for 13 minutes?
Damnit Iowa. They could have really helped us out.
You haven't made a shot for 14 minutes and you shoot a contested three. Makes perfect sense.
Man MSU is playing great freaking free throw D this game.
Treat women with respect.
How do you go without a FG for 13 minutes? That's unreal.
"There are no excuses of who we don't have"... except for the excuses that I constantly make, and that the media makes on my behalf.
A million afterwards.
Smiling Izzo is the ugliest thing in the world.
Good god Iowa pooped themselves
Iowa is dead to me
Iowa lost this game so hard. They seriously sucked balls tonight. Holy terrible playing. And naturally the announcers are talking about the resolve Sparty has played with in order to "win" this game. Also Byrd making that 3 seriously pisses me off for some reason.
It's simple for us at this point. Win. The. Game! All we gotta do is win, baby! It doesn't matter about how anyone else does.
mightily. Not sure I've ever seen a team miss bloody everything for the whole last 15 minutes of a game. They don't deserve it.
Disgusting. Ohio, Minnesota and Iowa all had Sparty on the ropes and couldn't finish the damn deal.
I listened to the BHGP podcast today, and the guy from theonlycolors mentioned how MSU was getting "screwed" by players hitting their FTs against them. Well, take today's game as whatever karmic justice you need as payback.
And that about sums it up. No, it's not "amazing"
Gary Harris looks like Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
that MSU is going to win their 19th game with all these injuries! Sooooo amazing....
Announcers are idiots. I want their job.
Michigan State can't help themselves.
Neither team deserved to win this game. Mich bball is so beautiful to watch. We are very fortunate fans
Jesus fartbags. This game should be locked up, shipped to The Hague and made to stand trial for crimes against the game of baskeball
Wow did Iowa blow this game.
I've never seen a team with all of their timeouts with 5 secs to go in OT. Haha.
or Iowa is not nearly as good as I thought.
Or both teams played like shit tonight.
They both kind of sucked today. MSU didn't stop Iowa as much as Iowa couldn't hit a FT in the end to save them. Over the last 11:30 minutes, MSU scored 18 points. They were only in the game because Iowa scored 14 and missed a bunch of FTs. This wasn't a great performance by either team; MSU was just able to muck it up enough to win.
CHOKE APPLING CHOKE
all the way to Iowa City...
all the way to Iowa City...
It would be ironic if Iowa won on their first FG in 16 minutes.
It's the wrist
Oh yeah the wrist injury, ESPN. Where did the "no excuse" meme go?
"Appling can't cock his wrist. "
Presented without comment.
Just. One. Field goal. Please!
why is he in there at the end of the game?
Shooting into a sea of yellow. He had no chance with that wrist.
Lol at the UK score. LSU up 22-6. Oh dear.
Slap the floor!
and his wrist would heal. On second thought institute double slaps on key possessions.
LOL Iowa. Horrid
They called time out and couldn't come up with a better play than sending the smallest guy on the court for a layup?
Wow that was a foul on Appling.
A challenged layup by the 6 foot white guy? Stupid Hawkeyes.
And no call.
FUCK YOU TOM IZZO! DON'T EVER COMPLAIN ABOUT ANOTHER MOTHERFUCKING CALL!
How do they not call that foul on Appling?! HOLY FUCK!
he's playing with a hurt wrist. He had to use his body instead. If you have a hurt wrist, I believe its a no call. hurt wrist.
Good foul by Appling. Ref ain't calling that body check to decide the game
Iowa with the well deserved loss. You can argue that it was a foul at the end, though a.) even I wouldn't call that and b.) it's not like Iowa was going to make both of them.
Izzo's wiping the sweat off of his face with his hands. i wouldn't want to be in handshake line.
Off to politics. How boring.
And that is why an Izzo team is almost always contending for a B1G title. And I won't count them out for next year, as depleted as they will be.
Because the other team can't hit a FT to save themselves?
And btw, this "depleted" team still has a lottery pick and another 4-year starter playing at least reasonably well.
MSU can win games by mucking it up and the refs letting them get away with it. But next year is not going to be fun for them, no matter how "tough" they play.
So they can't muck it up next year? The refs will change?
I hope like @#$% you're right, but they were missing two of their best four players and beat a top B1G team on the road.Next year, two will have graduated and a strong possibility of a third leaving. Izzo will also have the advantage of knowing they are gone from day one and can develop and game plan accordingly. And there's always the possibility of players blossoming and stepping up.
You won't see an elite team, but you won't see a dreg either.
Nobody expects MSU to be a dreg, but the conference is stronger and look no further than Indiana to see what happens when you lose a great deal of talent. They'll be competitive, but no amount of gameplanning will change the fact that your team lacks offensive playmakers and isn't as great defensively as it used to be.
Whiner's prosper. Never thought I'd see that level of pro visiting team bias in the B1G.
And yes, I think Iowa blew it by not making their FT's. No doubt. But even with all the calls the refs still were letting MSU get away with stuff that they didn't let Iowa do.
a third of their points there while going 15 minutes without making a basket of any kind. Where was White and all these other contributors?
For the love of god ESPN, I thought Dick Vitale was bad enough to listen to during games.
Is bad, but nowhere near Dickie V bad. I do like how negative Bilas can be. He rightfully railed on that Harris foul.
Yeah, my bad on over-reacting. I agree Bilas isn't bad, at least as far as I can remember. Just got tired of this "MSU fighting through adversity" story repeated over and over.
Any announcers that are liked?
Everyone loves Gus.
that's fitting. Gad did Iowa shit the bed there--epic fashion.
Fergodsakes Iowa. How the eff do you lose that game. Both decided to have their off nights yet Sparty's off night was good enough. Yuck.
Because in about a two minute span, Appling took 3 steps in an obvious travel, Fran noticed and got T'd for it, and Valentine committed his eighth foul by clothelining Woodbury to get a rebound and put back. Six points in regulation, Iowa wins going away without them.
Marble got away with a travel, too, so let's cancel those out. Iowa went to the freethrow line 43 times. Let's make sure they go some more, cuz that aint enough. Sure, Izzo could have been T'd. But McCaffery's act is over the top by any standards. Dude loses his mind over minor calls every game. Iowa's loss was not because of refs. They were close because of refs.
You have FG droughts of 4 and 5 min in the first half and a 13(!) minute one in the second half and you have 4 timeouts going into OT? Where is the stop, draw up a play and win the game? Totally felt that Iowa gave this one away
So Appling, who according to Izzo "couldn't shoot" just three days ago because of his wrist, led MSU with 16 points including 3-6 from downtown, and twice slapped the floor. Okay.
Yeah, we all knew those were just excuses because they got straight outplayed by their rivals at home
Can anyone explain to me why Izzo is allowed to be on the court as Iowa inbounds the ball? He was essentially a 6th defender on the last inbounds play.
He pulls that shit all thet time and has never and will never be called on it.
Izzo spends more time on the court than his players.
"Get off the court Tom"
please make this happen.
It is astonishing how Izzo does technical foul-worthy things in basically every game and never gets T'd up.
Meanwhile, Fran McCaffery seems to be a technical foul magnet.
Just waiting for an inbounder to hurl one at him to pick up a quick T in that situation.
See but playing in an OT game didn't make his team tired. So that's how they were able to win
I hope Iowa plays like that against us in our next game with them. We'd win by 20.
Both of these teams sucked tonight.
The B1G is ours!
It seems like teams we root for to help us out in the standings always find creative ways to choke. Dammit Iowa.
What can you say?
Iowa is dogshit. 40 freaking free throws and you still lose. The refs tried to give Iowa the game and they still couldn't win LOL. I'm kind of pissed we only beat them by 8 at Crisler.
In a faily officiated game, they shoot 55. I'm not even kidding.
43 free throws to 20 is unfair to Iowa? I'm all for slamming MSU and refs, but you need to check your maize and blue glasses. Iowa got plenty of calls and blew the game. There were times when any attempt to defend or rebound was a foul. It's a crappy way to call a basketball game, and brutal to watch.
One game at a time. Just keep plugging away Blue!
shot 40 plus free throws, and that's not taking into account the missed front end of s couple one and ones. That may have been a foul but did Iowa really deserve to get bailed out on that play? Good god, is it too much to ask to make one basket in the last 10 min of regulation? How dose a coach not call a TO in that stretch?
15 minutes of game time without a made FG. At home. Loss deserved.
We now have a 3 game lead on 81.8% of the Big Ten, I'm good with it.
They have to have too much pride to play like that at home.
That wasn't the team that we played at the Crisler Center a week ago. Stunning collapse.
It's beginning to look like a two team race.
Iowa is absolute jello. Total mental midgets. No balls.
If I am MSU, I wouldn't even consider bringing back Payne until they go to the Kohl center.
i really thought iowa would win that game by 10, they shoulv'e. embarrassing.
They're so over rated. I watched and was blown away by what I saw. Did they miss 15 free throws? I'm expecting a win when we go there, hands down.
Damn you Angry Iowa Free Throw and Field Goal Hating God!
When will coaches learn that isolating your best player as the clock winds down doesn't work like 80% of the time? Run a play!
