TTB: Summer Camp Participants

Submitted by Magnus on

Since it's Friday and we're clearly bored (hence the two "It's Friday so what are you doing?" threads), I thought I would inject a little football talk into the board.

Over the past couple weeks, I've tried to keep track of names of kids who are planning to visit Michigan for camp next week.  I wrote up some info on the various prospects who have mentioned it, but it's not a comprehensive list, obviously.  If you have names to add, let me know.  And feel free to discuss, either here or over at TTB.  With the 2013 recruiting class nearly completed, most of our interest probably lies in the 2014 kids.

I'm interested in seeing Caleb Day, Mike Barwick, James Hendren, and Gelen Robinson the most.  I'm also interested to see if Kizer and/or Stewart comes away with an offer.

I don't really have any predictions, though.  It's a little early to sort all these 2014 guys out...

I'm excited about Gelen Robinson too.  He's an intriguing prospect, for sure.  Partly because we sometimes have those conversations about how good so-and-so would be if he played football instead of basketball, or vice versa.  This is almost like finding out.

I don't think the coaches will offer both Kizer and Stewart. Kizer has the more impressive offer list (Nebraska, namely), so I think if the coaches really like him they'll offer him sooner rather than later.

IIRC the coaches are waiting on camp to evaluate Day to see if they want to offer him yes? If Fuller and McQuay go elsewhere (M not entirely out of the picture on either yet), he may be a very suitable contigency plan if he doesn't got tOSU.

Serious question from someone who has visited your site a few times but not a ton (maybe 5-10 times over the last couple of years):  do you ever scout these kids at the actual camps?  Or is 100% of your analysis based on tape that you review via the internet?  Thanks.

You got one heckuva fan base on here, Magnus. Would you be interested in just one more question about your certification in the field of recruiting expertise, and the accredited institution of higher learning in which you received certification?

I think it tells a lot about the type of info people prefer around here.

If you post on your blog that you texted a 4-star recruit and he texted back saying he loved Michigan and he plans on visiting, everyone will love you.  If you text that same recruit after his visit and he tells you how much he loves Michigan and that Michigan is in his top-5, everyone will lov you.

However, if you use your knowledge of football to analyze our commits based on their tape and camp info and rank them on a scale of 1-100 so that we as a fanbase can have another piece of data by which to determine who in our class has the best chance of being the real stars, you're an asshole every time you rank a kid lower than 95 or predict he'll be anything less than All Big Ten.

No problem. Living in Florida the huge majority of my life, it's not easy to find Michigan fans. When I do run into them it always seems like instant brotherhood, so I'll listen to the opinions  of anybody who loves UM. Your evaluations differ from the normal "He is an absolute beast" evaluations, which I think is extremely optimistic. Anyway, I enjoy both versions.

Now look, I don't know if even Mgnus considers himself an "expert," but if you think he's not qualified enough - don't read his analysis.  But there are a lot of people on here who either don't have the time to watch everyone's youtube highlights or don't know enough about football to analyze a recruit video themselves and they appreciate any additional insight.

We LOOOVED TomVH, but he never saw these players in person (he lived in AZ) and I don't believe he ever even played football.  Point is, if someone is willing to give their knowledgable insight into recruits abilities, you can either take it or leave it.  Bitching about it, however, makes you look bad.

If everyone's highlights represent their best plays (and why wouldn't they, really), doesn't comparing highlight tapes allow you to evaluate prospects on an apples to apples basis? The coaches put out a lot of offers based on game film alone as well. Believe it or not they are actually fairly representative of a player.
