Try Hagerup at PK
This is officially laughable. Not only did Broekhuizen miss yet another chip-shot, every time he (EDIT: or Gibbons) kicks an XP it is nearly blocked because it is so low. I know we want our specialists to focus on one thing (e.g. punting only or field goals only), but why haven't we heard about the possibility of Hagerup kicking some PKs? Rivals ranked him as the 3rd kicker in the nation coming out of high school. Like I said, I know it is a bit unorthodox to have one guy taking care of all 3 phases of the kicking game, but Hagerup (and nearly every kicker in the NCAA) handled these responsibilities in High School just fine. Though most of our games have not been decided by 3 points, I'm not ok with accepting that we have the equivalent of a 12 year-old girl kicking our field goals. Am I out of line here?

Didnt gibbons kick the PAT his kicks are always low.
but I have never seen kicking this bad. I am now understanding why Oklahoma has 4 kickers on scholarship.

Did you not read Brian's commentary on Oklahoma's kickers? They do not have four scholarship kickers.
November 20th, 2010 at 2:18 PM ^
Gibbons has kicked the second two PATs. And yes, they've been ridiculously low.
November 20th, 2010 at 2:28 PM ^
it almost looked like a video game where the ball inexplicably goes right through the players hand on the field goal. i couldn't believe those weren't blocked!
November 20th, 2010 at 5:17 PM ^
That's the exact same thing I was thinking. Seriously, Vinopal could have blocked those.
November 20th, 2010 at 6:15 PM ^
were OMG low. That is about 3 feet lower than ridiculously low.

There are tons of kids out there who can kick better than these guys. Why can't we get them? Who is responsible to recruit them? There was a High School sophmore in the D1 Championship game in WI yesterday who kicked a 42 yarder...let's start talking to him now before UW does!!

Saad.

I got it.

At what point does the special teams coach lose his job...I believe it is Tony Gibson (DBs and Special Teams) two units that have completely under performed. I think he needs to go. Thoughts?
November 20th, 2010 at 5:56 PM ^
our problem is that our ST coach is also a DB coach? Maybe we should get someone who knows what they're doing. Kickers are being recruited, they just probably decide not to go somewhere where they will have to coach themselves.
Oh, and booing when the kicker runs on the field definitely helps recruiting and future confidence.
November 20th, 2010 at 2:48 PM ^
Tony Gibson is an undercover buckeye...but really he sucks and is just good friends with the coach..if coach doesn't fire him this year i want coach fired.
November 20th, 2010 at 2:51 PM ^
How about we just not kick at all?
November 20th, 2010 at 3:06 PM ^
Drop-kick the goddamn football for all I care. Just get it in the general vicinity of the uprights on a more consistent basis, please.
November 20th, 2010 at 3:20 PM ^
accepting that we have the equivalent of a 12 year-old girl kicking our field goals
Okay, I get it, we need to have a better kicking game. However, pissing on our players who I am sure are not trying to screw up makes you a complete jackass, today.
November 20th, 2010 at 3:41 PM ^
I agree, but at the same time I think that a lot of our problems are taking place in the head....we need to suck it up and move on. Brokehuizen is hearing voices I think.
November 20th, 2010 at 5:59 PM ^
I must be hearing voices too, cause I heard a whole lot of booing when our kicker ran on the field. Wow, I wonder why his nerves would get muddled? It's really an internal issue here, he should be able to take people booing him BEFORE he kicks without getting nervous. Acting like a freshman... oh wait what? Oh shit, and we booed that guy? Oops.

....if you are getting the equivalent of around $17,000+ benefit (around the cost of associated tuition and hte like...especially because I believe Gibbons is a scholarship) and you mess up *this* badly (even Speilman pointed it out) you damn well deserve that kind of pissing on.
November 20th, 2010 at 3:28 PM ^
Travis Baltz at Maryland spent 3 years as punter only, but this year he's doing field goals too. From what he's told me he doesn't mind helping the team, but they are really working him hard and I think he'd rather focus solely on punting.
November 20th, 2010 at 4:15 PM ^
I don't understand why we don't go for it on fourth down in "field goal range" a missed FG and a turnover on downs is the same thing, and our offense is perfectly capable.
November 20th, 2010 at 4:17 PM ^
I think we have and he's just not good at it. They are different skills, after all.
November 20th, 2010 at 4:19 PM ^
Im sure RR has given Hagerup a shot. I mean we had open auditions for the position, Im sure he looked to Hagerup before he opened it up for auditions throughout the campus.
November 20th, 2010 at 5:55 PM ^
I think that we should just politely ask the other team's coach if he could tell his players not to try to block the kicks so that Gibbons/Broekheisen can (maybe) have a feel-good moment and get himself onto E-60 or some show like that.
November 20th, 2010 at 10:00 PM ^
There lack of development though at the position is astonishing. How are they missing 30 yard field goals consistently through out the whole season. They shouldn't be doing it at the beginning of the season. However if they are, shouldn't we expect adjustments by the 2nd to last game?
November 20th, 2010 at 10:10 PM ^
I was thinking the same thing.
November 20th, 2010 at 10:14 PM ^
if WH were able to do a better job than SB and BG wouldn't he already have the job? It seems to me that Will has enough to worry about with his punting duties.
November 21st, 2010 at 10:40 AM ^
With the shortage of scholly's and the extreme needs on defense, I hope Gibbons is given the saban treatment.I'm sorry but we need to field a defense and we need a kicker, a kicker worthy of a scholarship.gibbons has got to go.
November 21st, 2010 at 12:06 PM ^
The best 2 kicks I've seen all season from our kickers were the onside kicks yesterday. Maybe we should have them just practice that and try and never have our defense on the field. Even if we get 1/3, I'd say it'd improve our chances of winning... the length of the field doesn't seem to make a difference when your D gives up rushing touchdowns on 3rd and long.
