The troubled world of postgrad basketball

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Interesting read on postgrad basketball academies. As you would expect, there is not much education at some of them. Food either.

Side-note: The author refers to one of the players in the story, Jamal Poplar, as a onetime Michigan recruit. A little bit of a stretch as Michigan never offered and barely made much noise on the radar based on his recruit profile page on UMHoops. The author used the only picture captured of Poplar at Michigan from UMHoops in the article. 2 of the players in the story played AAU ball for the Michigan Mustangs (Derrick Walton's former team).

Haven't read the article, but as someone that worked at a school with post-grad students for a time, not all post-grad players are trying to "game the system" and not all schools' post-grad teams are full of players whose education is ignored.

But, it is a problem.

I don't understand how any self-respecting educator of youth could  perpetuate that probelm either.

I would bet a load of money that if Izzo doesn't bolt to be the GM of the Pistons he picks up the kid from West Virginia and/or another Grad transfer.  Hope it works out like Brandon Wood (dud)..

Izzo: "I promise we'll get to the final four... every kid I ever coached did"

Transfer:  "Well that's not really the case anymore but what what grad programs does MSU have I am interested in....."

Izzo:  Turns red.   "Do you know who I am?"  Grabs kid by the neck...then hugs him.

That article is scary. It makes me sad that some parents feel like they have no choice but to send their kid off to some stranger in hopes of getting a scholarship.
