"Ohio State junior defensive lineman Noah Spence has failed a drug test and his status with the team is in jeopardy, sources told Eleven Warriors Friday afternoon.

Spence, a first-team All-Big Ten selection who was suspended three games after testing positive for ecstasy prior to the Big Ten Championship Game, was supposed to make an anticipated return against Kent State Saturday.

He led the Buckeyes with eight sacks last season in addition to 52 tackles and 14.5 tackles for loss. Spence was projected by some to potentially be a top NFL Draft pick next spring.

A product of Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, Pa., Spence was a a five-star prospect and a Parade Magazine All-American.

An Ohio State spokesman did not immediately respond to request for comment. "

Weren't Spence's parents going to sue the school after the first failed drug test and suspension?  Or was that a different OSU player?  Thought they were adamant that he didn't do drugs.

I'm not a fan of enjoying other players' misery even if it's self imposed as long as it doesn't hurt others.

On the other hand, damn do I enjoy the pain of Buckeye fans.  F' them.

If you're suspended for three games for mdma and know a drug test is going to occur before you are reinstated you should probably not do drugs.

Dumb side note to this story: the Big Ten considers mdma a performance enhancing drug for sports?

I feel bad for him in the sense that I hate seeing young men throw their life away, but yeah this was incredibly stupid for him to do so the sympathy only goes so far.  However, in response to the first post, the dichotomy between feeling bad for the player and happy with regards to the fan base is still valid.

Hopefully, Spence being dumb doesn't stop him from getting into the NFL.  I figured he'd go this year anyhow.

I have no idea how something like this will hurt his chances but we've seen people do much worse and get a shot (or second) at the nfl.

I don't know if the rumor is true, but I heard that Wes Welker's troubles went back to Molly too.  Of course I heard later that they went to Adderall.  Anyway, I'm with you.  Once you have been suspended, it becomes an especially good idea to not do drugs.

Although if Spence was using Molly, it helps me imagine this conversation in the OSU training room:

Braxton Miller:  Man, Noah, our guys must feel terrible after the VaTech loss.  I can't imagine how bad they feel.

Noah Spence:  It's no big deal, I feel that way every Tuesday.

I assume ALL amphetamines are considered performance enhancing.

Pharmacodynamics: MDMA is a phenylethylamine that has stimulant as well as psychedelic effects. MDMA is related in structure and effects to methamphetamine, however, it has significantly less CNS stimulant properties than methamphetamine.

Haven't taken it, have you?

No Comment...

For myself - I wouldn't consider it performance enhancing.

I can see where at low doses it could potentially be performance enhancing in the same sense that Beta Blockers are - useful for blunting performance anxiety/stage fright.

I will say it's "speedier" than acid or boomers, but I would generally personally class it as a hallucinogen... that being said - it is technically an amphetamine.

The NCAA drug rules -

The NCAA bans the following classes of drugs:

a. Stimulants;

b. Anabolic Agents;

c. Alcohol and Beta Blockers (banned for rifle only);

d. Diuretics and Other Masking Agents;

e. Street Drugs;

f. Peptide Hormones and Analogues;

g. Anti-estrogens; and

h. Beta-2 Agonists.

Note: Any substance chemically related to these classes is also banned.

This is "business as usual" in Columbus.  Somehow, Urban Meyer will come off as the "good guy" here, standing up for decency, etc.  My guess: he is telling Spence and his parents that it is "out of (his) hands" but will tell the media there is a "zero tolerance policy at THE Ohio State University."
