A Tribute to Notre Dame: Beverage Edition

Submitted by wlubd on

Today is a special day. Not the longest rivalry, but certainly a memorable one for fans is ending later tonight and I felt my regular game ritual just wasn't sufficient for such an event. While we all give some mostly-deserved crap towards ND, they have been a part of Michigan football for decades and ending that rivalry is a big deal.

Accordingly, I decided to come up with a drink to commemorate the occasion. A drink so glorious and ND-inspired that generations will look back on it and wish they had invented it.

I call it, THE NOTRE DAME FIG THING SMOOTHIE. Inspired of course by our Irish friends marketing department:

First, we'll need our ingredients:

Figs, obviously, in honor of Notre Dame. I included some yogurt to thicken it and some frozen peas to add the necessary touch of green. Feel free to use any substitute as a green vegetable though, it will all taste excellent. I also included some chicken broth mix in honor of ND's manner of ending the rivalry. Some whisky as part of the Irish tradition (I didn't have Irish whisky so Famous Grouse had to do). And finally some lemon juice as an homage to Brian and the others who ate a lemon this week.

Now that we figured that out, it was time to make it:

This is turning out even better than I expected. For those of you at home interested in trying the fig thing smoothie, that was 2 yogurts, about 2 cups of frozen peas, 6 small dried figs, half a teaspoon of chicken broth mix, and liberal amounts of whisky and lemon juice. Feel free to experiment though. This drink will be great no matter what.

Once blended to the proper consistency, it was time to serve:

Excellent! Note that the fig on top as a garnish adds an extra touch of class to this gourmet drink.

I personally found I probably could have blended everything a bit longer. My smoothie had a bit of a chunky texture (see above) to it that never really went away. Readers may wish to blend to a more liquid consistency

And that's the end result. How did I feel? Proud. Fulfilled. Grateful that the the Fig Thing Smoothie exceeded my wildest expectations and did not cause me to vomit. The perfect drink to celebrate our last game with the Irish Fig Things.

I now welcome you, MGoBrethren, to put forth your own Fig Thing-Inspired recipes, so we can all share in this wonderful beverage that (thankfully, as I have a few more sips of it), may never have to be made again.

Go Blue!

I'll admit to you, I had my doubts. I formulated the idea in my head, went out and got some figs and came home to my wife mentioning fig smoothies with green vegetables are apparently an actual thing...

Outside of the chicken broth, whisky, and lemon juice (and maybe not even the lemon juice), there are people drinking this regularly. This is a NOTRE DAME FIG THING SMOOTHIE so I couldn't forego the broth and whisky. If anything, this was the tame version. I nearly incorporated potatoes in as well.

Not as bold as a green pea, fig, whiskey, yogurt, chicken broth combo but every year for ND I have the same thing.

Tonight I'll be snacking on corned beef and Dubliner cheese with Grey Poupon on croissants, heated to perfection and many Irish Car Bombs (one shot each of Irish whiskey and Irish cream dropped into a pint of Guinness).

My Notre Dame moment that I am most proud of is when I was driving from Chicago to Indiana for a wedding and stopped to take a dump at a South Bend rest stop. Yes, I literally had it planned so I could tell my Notre Dame fan friends that story with a gleam in my eye. I still tell it with the same pride 20 years later...better than a cooler right? : ) Next stop is Columbus! Go Blue!
