The 6-1, 218-pound DePriest was in Ann Arbor on Nov. 21 as Ohio State wrapped up the regular season with a win over host Michigan.

“It was a good game,” DePriest said. “There were a lot of mistakes, but it was real live up there. Michigan is a good school. They need to get out of the hole they are in. They want me to come up and play early.”

Okay, let's take out the DSU stats. Who generally seems to be this blog's favorite to be the starter for the next couple years? Vincent Smith.

Smith carried the ball 31 times for 110 yards, which is an average of 3.55 yards per carry. His longest carry would have been TEN yards. And he had ZERO touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Cox had 2 carries for 31 yards (not sure where you got your stats) and a long of 24. So Michael Cox STILL had a better yards per carry average and the longest run of the two.

It wouldn't matter if he had had 50 yards on those carries. You're glossing over the salient point, outside of DSU he had 2 (!) carries this year and those came at the end of the EMU blowout! Let me repeat, Cox's only carries came against real and glorified 1-AA opponents. They are no basis for saying he's statistically the best returning RB, especially not when Smith was grinding out 4 ypcarry and scoring a touchdown as a receiving threat against freakin OSU.

No and no.

I said that he's statistically the best running back we have returning. Highest average yards per carry, longest runs vs. FBS *and* FCS opponents, and just as many rushing TDs as anyone else.

Sure, you can make an argument that Vincent Smith was statistically the best running back, since he had more overall yards...but 3.55 yards per carry against FBS opponents isn't impressive, no matter how you slice it.

You can't just openly ignore context and expect me or anyone else to put weight into your conclusions that follow.

Statistics are meaningless unless you adequately account for context.

Your rebuttal is lame.

You don't understand this, do you?

STATISTICS do not lie. They are facts. They cannot be argued. The STATISTICS in the record book at the University of Michigan show that Michael Cox was more successful as a running back in most STATISTICAL categories last season.

I am not saying he's the best. Obviously, the coaches don't think he's the best, or else Cox would have started the OSU game. I'm saying his numbers are better.

This is the last time I'll comment on this, because it's just stupid at this point.

The weight statistics carry is argued all the time. Boise State went undefeated in the regular season, they didn't get considered for the national champiionship game because although their record was the same, people didn't confuse that for their regular season being equally impressive. Boise's record wasn't as impressive cause they were beating up on WAC teams, Cox's stats aren't as impressive because he was beating up on a I-AA team and a team that should be in I-AA. Are some of Cox's numbers higher? Obviously, but to say he had the "best" numbers confers a value judgment that, given the context they were accumulated, is misplaced.

I'm in the same camp as you are. Just wondering why Mike Cox isnt being mentioned more often. He's looked good in limited playing time and with Brandon Minor gone, he can definately fit into the big back role. If Hopkins is as good as advertised, I really do think we have enough playing time for two big backs though. It's not a given that Vincent Smith will recover in time for the 2010 season given that ACLs can take at least a year to feel "normal" again. Hopefully we are in a situation where we don't have to rush him back due to having numerous backs step up.

but I don't recall any RBs being back to full speed the first year after a torn ACL especially with the injury taking place the last game of the year. They're usually not back to full strength until year two.

Vincent Smith isn't the only guy we have back. I completely forgot about Cox. He didn't have any meaningful carries just garbage time, he still has much to prove. I agree putting Hopkins ahead of him is a bit of a stretch though. Im hoping Lewan has a great spring and can take over Ortmann's spot because I have never been to crazy about Dorrestein and putting and LT is a scary thought to me. Our O-Line should give any back that we hand the ball to the chance to be effective this season.

Exactly what I was thinking. His Alias' have to be into the double-digits by now. Emo stop cursing us with all your predictions. According to you Murphy, Grimes and others have been silent commits for weeks. How'd that turn out for us? Now your calling for Depriest if we start off strong next year. Please. Make. It. Stop.
