Honestly thought he would have a much tougher time in the NBA.  His work ethic cannot be underestimated; he really seems to have added new parts to his game and burnished the parts he already had.

I know I've harped on this before, but defense is a thing. Also, Mo Cheeks is terrible.

Compare their stats over the course of January thus far, when Mo has finally stopped yo-yoing the hell out of KCP's minutes.

Seriously, I feel bad for the kid. He gets 30 minutes one game, 15 the next, 25, then 5, then 4, then 40. It's ridiculous. It's like you're doing everything in your power to ruin a young player.

So far in January KCP's stats have been this:

10 ppg

3 rpg

1.4 apg

1,6 spg

0.2 bpg

53.7% fg (!)

42.9% 3pt (!)

0% ft (hasn't attempted a FT)

He's also the 5th or 6th scoring option on the team, while Trey is generally the 1st or 2nd.

For comparison, Trey's stats in January:

11 ppg

4 rpg

6.3 apg

0 bpg

1.3 spg

33.3% fg

19% 3pt

85.7% ft

There are also things called leadership and court presence.  Burke has both in spades.  KCP?  No.

I don't think you can justify KCP over Burke, but keep trying.  Maybe if you threw in Brandon Jennings as well you can get close.

And in no way, shape, or form can you justify the Josh Smith signing / move to SF.

No idea where you got your numbers, but Trey's January splits are better than the ones you posted. He's at 12.4 ppg, 37% from the field, 28% from 3, etc.

I'm also not sure why we're grabbing that particular sample of his season, when he went for 17 ppg on 43.5% shooting (41.4% from deep) and 5.4 apg.

that is what he does.  Again and again and again, he hijacks threads about Trey and turns them into defenses of Caldwell-Pope.  [I am sure he would defend this because Michigan alums complained about Dumars---so what?].   Besides cherry-picking stats, he simply cannot respond without minimizing Trey.

I now see that his new whipping boy is Mo Cheeks.  He may deserve it--but somehow Dumars acquisitions of Jennings and Smith escape blame.  The Pistons have been horrible of late--or longer--a win over studly Philadelphia notwithstanding.   Jennings and Smith are as often the cause of losses as they are the reasons for wins.  History bears that out.  But that runs contrary to the meme that the Pistons are on the rise.

TheLastHarbaugh

Yeah. I totally "hijacked" this thread.

You seem awfully obsessed with me, man. Might want to get a new hobby.

And for being so obsessed with all of my Pistons posts you really have no idea what my thoughts or opinions are of the team.

It's almost like you have no idea what you're talking about.

I openly ackowledge that I like Trey Burke as a basketball player in general and for what he gave us last season.  So, not surprisingly, I open threads about Trey Burke.  What then happens is I find you selling your Joe Dumars/Caldwell-Pope argument for the millionth time on a Trey Burke thread.  As you make the same selective arguments you have in the past, I cannot help but to try to correct them.

If I was obsessed with you, I would troll your other postings.  But because I don't have any idea what your opinions are about other subjects and, to my knowledge haven't responded to any of them, I must not be a very constant lover.

Edit:  And if and when CP has a noteworthy game, please feel free to start a thread.  I promise that I won't be on there belittling him or even comparing his numbers to Trey's---cuz that would be a thread about something else.

goblue20111

January 14th, 2014 at 12:11 PM ^

The argument only gets made because every single Trey Burke thread devolves into a subset of Pistons' fans who are still pissed that Burke was passed on by the team. Naturally someone who disagrees is going to defend his position. The problem isn't thelasthoke, it's the fans who bring up Joe Dumars. Check the threads and the timestamps. They're always the ones starting the problem.

TheLastHarbaugh

January 14th, 2014 at 12:25 PM ^

I would love to just post "Yay! Trey Burke!" in a Trey Burke thread, but literally every single Trey Burke thread is not about Trey Burke.

It's about creating a "Fuck KCP!" and "Fuck Joe Dumars!" circle jerk. I mean, one of the very first posts in this thread was, "I detest Joe Dumars" followed by a KCP - Trey Burke comparison. Then a bunch of people circle jerking about it.

I could have started several KCP threads in the last few weeks when he has had solid performances, but I'm not going to do that, because unlike you, my primary existence isn't predicated on trolling people.

You do troll the fuck out of my other postings. You're all about responding to me in these threads.

I'm also not belittling Trey Burke's numbers. The fact that you even stated that shows that you're not a person capable of having any sort of reasonable dialogue.

Gordon Hayward is their first scoring option.  Burke has been a good floor leader which, like defense, is difficult to measure statistically but has made dramatic impact on how this team performs.  Everyone really needs to get over the Pistons not drafting Burke and just have two young upincoming teams to follow in the NBA.  It's ok, they are even in different conferences.

TheLastHarbaugh

January 14th, 2014 at 11:39 AM ^

That's why I said Burke is their first or second scoring option. Burke is taking the second most shots per game (12.9), while Hayward is taking the most (14.5), but that's a little misleading because when Burke was out the first 3rd of the year Hayward's FGA were inflated because he was asked to be the primary ball handler. Since Burke came back from injury they've pretty much been shooting the same number of FGA per game. They are 1 and 1A depending on the night.

Just like everyone else. Trey hasn't been the 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd scoring option on the team. Living in Utah and going to multiple Jazz games already, it's clear the team defers to Gordon Hayward first. Then it's a toss-up between Richard Jefferson, Marvin Williams, and Alec Burks. Trey pretty much sets them up, then picks up some iso and Trey-being-Trey buckets on the side. I've been to games where he's put up 8, I've also been at ones where he'll put in the high teens. He's not their go-to.

umumum

January 14th, 2014 at 11:33 AM ^

when you were there?  I've watched a number of them.  Trey is the second option on the team and second in shots per game.  Hayward is clearly option number 1.  If Williams and Jefferson were 2 and 3, their numbers would be better--much better.  Burks--who I like alot--gets his numbers when Hayward is off the court--both during rotations and, like last night, when Hayward is out.  If you having been watching Utah, then we disagree about Trey's role--but I have stats to back me up.

When I last looked at the Jazz stats a few days ago, Burke was the team leader in assists per game and had the third-highest average points per game as well as the overall best A/T ratio on the team. I am sure I am missing a few things, but he is definitely continuing the tradition of making his presence felt in a huge way.

Is anyone thinking of going to The Palace friday to watch the game? I wont be able to make it, but it would be cool if someone could go and get some details you wouldn't be able to see on TV.

Since I live in NYC about a half mile from MSG, myself and a handful of friends will without a doubt be going to the Knicks/Jazz game on March 7th. It would be great to get a whole lot of the many other Michigan alums in the area to also come. This will this be a rare opportunity to see both those guys on the floor again at the same time.

Also, there's like 15,000 Michigan grads living in the city plus many other fans I would think so I really hope we can show up in a noticeably large contingent. I'm sure it would mean a lot to Trey and Tim.

Tim Hardaway Jr.  This is what ESPN's Thorpe says:

"Hardaway is looking like one of the biggest steals of this class. His 3-point shooting alone is of high value – he's making more than a third of his 3s from all five spots on the floor (corners, wings and the top of the arc), one of only a few players doing so. But it's his ability to get involved in the transition game that helps elevate him from the "shooters" category into the higher-valued "scorers" group."

He is ranked 3rd behind Carter-Williams and Trey.

Hardaway was the dude who scared me worse than Burke. I mean, his draft stock was at a place where taking him at 8 would have been a terrible decision considering you could have traded back 10-15 spots and still landed him, but everyone knew he had all of the tools to be a good NBA player. The questions surrounding him were mental makeup and consistency. One of those, "if he ever figures it out, he's going to be GOOD" guys that the NBA graveyard is littered with.

He's definitely exceeding expectations, but a lot of the good press he's getting is due to the fact that he's exceeding expectations + New York + J.R. Smith is tanking +team is terrible and they need something write about, "Oh, hey, this rookie who no one expected anything of is doing stuff!"

Not to take anything away from him, but he's averaging 8-1-1. This rookie group was said to be the weakest in 30 years, and maybe ever. It's kind of holding true.

I understand that many a folk are upset about the draft, but I honestly think Dumars made a good choice with this pick.  KCP is a plus-defender who is shooting the ball much better than he did earlier in the season. His offense is beginning to come around (slowly, but surely). He's also averaging about 6 minutes less than Burke, so his numbers would be a tad bit better.

I am thrilled that Burke is performing this well this early in his career, and it would have been awesome to see him in a Pistons uni, but I think it might be too early to call this draft choice a mistake.

umichjenks

January 14th, 2014 at 2:22 AM ^

Oh he plays 6 min less but still is getting out rebounded by a 6ft Burke and has 4 less assists per game and scores less. Plus Burke is in a way worse team. Joe D cannot draft....Daye, Knight, Rodney White, Darko, Mateen.

How he still has a job is beyond me.

You act like 33% is awful. I think 50% from two is a solid benchmark and guys that can do that consistently are usually very good players and teammates. 33% from three is the same damn thing. Is that sharpshooting? No. Is it a huge liability and terrible? No

Dilla Dude

January 14th, 2014 at 10:36 AM ^

Yeah but his percentage was in the 20's earlier in the year. Now he's shooting 33% from 3, and that number should bump up as the season goes on.  In 5 January games, he's shooting almost 54% from the field and averaging 10 points and 1.6 steals. Small sample size, I know. But he's coming along.

Looking forward to watching Trey take on the Pistons this Friday.

team I was told in my cousins 4 years with the team that Trey was by far the most polite and nicest guy on the team. How any teams past him up is beyond me. I was a kings fan prior to the draft but I've had it with them, so piston fans are not alone. The kings are a turnover crazy team and Trey always makes others better around him. Glad he's having success.

I mean, I didn't like Joe D's decision to pass on Burke, but this team is a train wreck regardless of whether Jennings is running the point or not.  Watching Josh Smith shoot threes is like watching a 2013 Michigan tailback pick up a 3rd and short.

worst GM's for drafting/hiring coaches and free agent moves and contracts. Austin Daye, knight, Mateen, Rodney white, Darko, KCP. Hiring Mo Cheeks, Michael Curry, Lawrence Frank. FA pick ups Charlie V, Ben, Josh Smith, bringing Chauncey back.
