Tressel viewed more favorably than Meyer in Ohio

Submitted by BlueinDC on

A new Public Policy Polling survey found that former Ohio coach Jim Tressel is viewed more favorably among Buckeye fans than current coach Urban Meyer.

Sixty-five percent of OSU fans said they had a favorable opinion of Tressel, who resigned in the wake of an NCAA scandal involving the football program. Just 14 percent have a negative impression of Tressel, the poll found.

By contrast, 60 percent of Buckeye fans said they have a favorable opinion of Meyer. Two percent have an unfavorable opinion of the former Florida coach, who's yet to coach a single game in Columbus.

That said, Meyer slightly edges Tressel on the question of which coach Ohio fans would rather have coach their team. Thirty-eight percent of respondents said they would prefer Meyer, versus 33 percent who would want Tressel.

The automated poll, conducted Aug. 9-12, has a 3.16 percent margin of error.

I was hoping it was a significant difference.  I would love to see a rift in the "Sacred Brotherhood" sabotage Meyer's tenure.  They certainly seemed to enjoy it when that happened in Ann Arbor.  I would love to see interests within the program cause it to self-destruct for a few years.

If Meyer wins 9+ games in his first season or two that will change in his favor I would have to believe. I also expect him to win that many games in his first year because they do have some good talent, Meyer has been a winning coach (EDIT: Minus the Tebowless teams) no matter how much I can't stand him, and to top it all off their schedule is fairly weak this year. Winning cures everything and once he starts doing that Tressell will fade into the background even more. I hope he falls flat on his face and loses to Michigan each year, but this poll should honestly be done in like 3 or 4 years whene Meyer actually has some success or failure....hopefully failure.

For all the obvious information such as "Tressell who was resigned after a scandal that involved the football program"... And "Meyer, who has yet to cosch a game in Columbus"... Pretty sure that all of us kn the board is aware of these facts.

For not coaching a single game in Columbus, I would say that's not negative for Meyer.  Especially comparing him to one of OSU's best coaches.  Just another pointless poll.

there's a notable article on Urban at the WWL:

mostly anecdotal nonsense about how coaches who have won NC's at one school usually don't duplicate the effort at another (exception, Saban)... but the more interesting part is Meyer's basic admission that he wasn't able to compile the coaching staff he may have otherwise preferred, including Coach Mattison.  Must be a real vote of confidence for Fickell and Withers to know that the D-coordinator at the arch rival would have been the head man's first choice.

I think you're reading too much into his comments.  Given how Meyer operates, that's probably his way of trying to motivate Fickell et al - make them want to prove him wrong.

Really shows you how fickle fanbases from large programs are.  While Tressel may have a more favorable opinion, more would still want Meyer coaching the team.  Why?  Because Tressell only one won National Championship?  Forget the whole 7 B1G championships in 10 years including 6 straight, 7 straight wins against your arch rival, 2 additional NC game appearences, constantly being in NC talk at the beginning of every season, and a winning percentage that would have put him only behing Bo in B1G history (if that last vacated year hadn't made him no longer eligable).  This on top of graduating a ton of players for as much winning as he did.

Ohio fans act like they needed a whole-sale change, but really all they needed was for Tressel to stop covering up impermissable benefits that he maybe didn't even need to get players to come play for OSU, and also to get and OC that would open it up to even just Nick Saban levels.  Instead they want a wildard, Urban Meyer, to run things.  Meyer could be better than Tressel, but Tressel levels of success are hard to come by.  It will be interesting to watch, but sometimes (most of the time) Ohio fans are batshit crazy.

1 national title or none at Ohio St. Him being there or not doesn't cover up the fact that no matter who is there they will always choke. The only reason Tressel won a national title with the bucks is because of a horrible late flag that should of never been. Miami U was robbed and I'll go to the grave defending that statement. You saw how overrated they were in the 2006 and 2007 national title games. Meyer being there helps them in recruiting I agree but if he doesn't do anything in the championship game then it's all for nothing.

you can never really get inside the collective "heads" of the people who answer these polls, but from a certain perspective the results make sense.  Tressel did a lot to ingratiate himself with Buckeye fans, and that wasn't all washed away by the stuff that went down (which is an understatement given the lengths people went to defend him).  By the same token, while they may maintain a more "favorable" opinion of him overal versus Meyer, given what happened I can see where they would say that, at this point, they'd rather have Meyer coaching the team.  These seem like somewhat incongruous results at first glance, but its not totally out of whack.

"Winning isn't everything, ....it's the only thing".

I'm not surprised at all. For Ohio fans, Tressel was such a dramatic improvement over John Cooper, and this not because of recruiting and victories - which was still quite good under Cooper - but because Tressel really delivered the goods on a consistent basis when playing against Michigan.

Of course, there's the relgious and devotational aspect of Tressel which Ohio fans hold in high esteem.

Now that the dirty laundry is out on Tressel, however, I imagine one must clasp on to the good memories that still exist, like 9-1* against Michigan since 2000.

*= Yes, I know it and you know it, but we are talking about opinion and Ohio fans.
