Tressel the tragic hero

Submitted by dahblue on

As folks are now aware, The Dean of Discipline referred to Saint Jim Tressel as a "Tragic Hero" at the Big Ten Media Days.  Given that the scoreboard webcam cannot capture the back of the board work, it seems there's not much else to ponder today (not expecting BBQ commitments until later in the weekend).  So, I thought I'd toss it out for the good people herein to suggest others who fit that label just as well as Tressel.

Some suggestions for parallels to Tres the Tragic Hero:

-Puff the Magic Dragon
-Ron Artest
-Plaxico Burress
-Casey Anthony
-Kwame Kilpatrick
-Rich (just kidding...do you really think I was going there?) -ard Nixon
-Maurice Clarett
-etc.

Oh, football season...please start.

Where is the media to give this asshat a proper fisking?  I mean in what way is rigging camp raffles for recruits you want heroic?  Did anyone ask him that?  If not the media isn't doing their job.

While this is very off-topic and judging by your name and point total, you're probably just trolling.  That said, not only do I dislike Mitch Albom (hes a talented writer, but as you mention not a great journalist), I happen to think the fab 5 are immensely overrated by Michigan fandom.  So that really has nothing to do with my opinion on this topic.

Do you think its OK for the media to completely let Dantonio off the hook for essentially praising a proven cheater?  In what world is Tressel a positive role model or whatever he said?

I wish I could say I was surprised.

Unfortunately, I spent the last four days in Columbus for the bar exam (went down Monday night, left yesterday).  I made the mistake of listening to 97.1 The Fan.  Anyone from the Columbus area who listens to the Big Show or Common Man and the Torg has known about the "sacrifice" of Tressel ("hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil") for some time now.

For the four days I was there, they continued to hammer home the point that Tressel did no wrong, and it was all TP's fault, which is kind of funny, considering they are called the Tat FIVE for a reason.  Not just TP's fault, but Adams, Herron, Posey, and Thomas.

I get that people support Tressel despite all the evidence against him; people want to believe he is a decent guy.  But at some point, you have to be realistic and accept that its not a one man problem.

Apparently Columbus just can't accept that.

What both Dantonio and his critics seem to miss is what, exactly, the term "tragic hero" means. It does not simply mean "heroic individual who has a bad thing happen to them". I had hoped our more well-read MGoCommenters would have noted this, but no one has mentioned it yet.

A "tragic hero" is the protagonist of a tragedy, usually a leader of men of noble birth, who, through some flaw of judgement or character (usually some form of hubris) suffers a serious negative reversal of fortune. Often they end up dead or ruined. Their stories are meant to evoke fear (of fate) or pity. Hamlet and Oedipus are typical examples. A good explanation is here, at yahoo answers of all places: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070826235021AAN0uVs

In this sense, St. Tress actually sort of fits.

I know what tragic hero means.  I took more issue with the statement that Tressel was positively impacting everyone he met.  Cheating the NCAA, lying about your players involvement at a drug house (where there are potential weapons and other dangers there) and rigging raffles doesn't positively affect everyone. That is stupid as hell.

Don't take it personally man. Obviously Dantonio's statements about what a swell guy Tressel was are dumb. Part of my point was that Dantonio doesn't really understand what it means to call Tressel a "tragic hero". I find that amusing, is all, and I think it would be funnier to mock him for his illiteracy by taking his label for Tressel at face value.

...I just about spit my sprite through my nose...dantino is such a suckup, gosh I can't stand that man.

Why dosen't he simply get off his knees and ask to be the next coach at tuos. Give me more reason to HATE them if he were to be hired there...what a gross thread.
