Tressel: Stay or Go?
Would you rather have Jim Tressel be forced out of Columbus with a 9-1 record (at least until a more in depth investigation is conducted and OSU is forced to surrender several of those victories) against Michigan or have him stay around so we can attempt to take him down a few notches on the field?
If he cheats, go.
If he's winning by great coaching and honesty, stay.
I think we all know what we want. And what's goin on.
I want to see Michigan beat him on the field. It will be a little bit of a let down for Michigan's next victory over OSU to be against anyone but Tressel.
stay but get huge sancations on scholarships and we get some of those recruits out of ohio and then use them to beat the shit out of them for the following years til hes forced out

OSU has some seriously attractive students. Hit up the Spearmint Rhino in Vegas and you'll see.
Never been there, but I did find myself staring at a few girls in OSU gear at a concert one time. They were gorgeous. It ripped my heart out when they got their picture taken while making the O-H-I-O sign. Such a waste of fantastic talent.

Tressel's a decent coach who's capitalized on some down years in the conference. His biggest strength, however, is to serve as a pious figurehead for his self-righteous program. That said, he ain't goin' nowhere. Folks in Cols are worried, and rightly so, but confident that he'll stick. Per 97.1 The Fan, they've already "self reported" a violation (sound familiar?). They're already preparing a rug for this to be swept under.
What is your definition of a good or even a great coach vs a decent one? In the ten years Tressel has been at OSU his record is 106–22. That is just decent to you?
You don't get extra points or extra wins for beating Tressel. And if he's fired - thoroughly unlikely - it'd be evidence enough that he runs the dirty program that we sometimes suspect. Nothing wrong with that.
While it would be nice to see the Buckeyes in turmoil without Tressel and administer a beating, I think it would feel better to do it with him on the sideline.
if the choice becomes beating OSU w/o tressel or losing to OSU and tressel, i take the former. winning trumps everything
Get him outta there. He is nearing the end of his career and I just can't see us beating them in the near future while he is there. We will not make up much if any ground if any on him if he stays. Believe me, I would like nothing more to pound a Tressel-run OSU team for a few years, but my Maize n' Blue goggles just don't have that strong of a prescription.
Cheaters never win - get him gone. Sure, I'd like to beat him on the field, but at this point, what difference does it make?
Anything that causes OSU pain, suffering and humiliation makes me happy.
It clearly states that he needs to report such things to those above him, even underlined in his contract. I know I'd get fired from my part-time job as a student tutor for breaking anything in my contract; he should be treated just the same.
Isn't that contract term likely just a reaction to the Jim O'Brien fiasco? It seems to me that it was intended to make clear that OSU doesn't need to wait for a finding of NCAA violations before firing the coach.
It doesn't mean they necessarily will enforce the provision of the contract.
O'Brien's firing was a reaction to all the heat on the football program from the Clarrett deal. OSU threw O'Brien under the bus to play the good little boy and protect the dogs from attacking its sacred cow of football. Then they went out and hired a guy who was even dirtier (Matta) and immediately got two commitments from two of the best high school prospects in the country (Oden and Conley), both from out of state.

If you were really good at your job and your employer determined that your value exceeded the negative reprecussions of your breach/the prospect of future breaches, he'd absolutely keep you no matter what the job. It's not an automatic dismissal at all. My guess is that Tressel would only be fired because of this if they determined that the benefit of firing him and preventing potential future sanctions outweighed his continued tenure as head coach. I doubt that they'll decide that. Unless, the evidence and circumstances are really, really damning.
He can be fired no matter what, the only issue would be how it affects any sort of buy-outs that may be in play, and it'd likely be settled anyway.

I want Tressel to stay but be forced to run a clean program where players actually go to class and don't get Corvettes in high school.
I know Tressel a little bit. He knows I'm a Michigan fan, but he has helped some people close to me. He also invited me to a practice. He is the kind of person every college would like to have as its representative. I have never understood why he is made out to be a bad guy. He clearly is NOT.
I have a seething hatred of him on game day, but he's a hell of a person, great Christian, awesome coach and a fantastic leader.
Hopefully, Brady Hoke is just like him.
I hope he's vindicated and then we beat the crap out of them on the field.

Judging someone by their "christian-ness" in a non-religious setting always strikes me as a little bit off. It's a big ol' mult-faithed/philosophied world and I find it a lot more salient that he is willing to take the time to help people that need it. I also will say that if I knew Hoke ran a program where athletes were openly flaunting free goodies that amounted to more than milkshakes at Mr. Spots, I would be first in line calling for his head.

Judging someone in general seems a little off. Tressel seems like a genuinely good guy.
That said, he's the (dang good) football coach at a school I strongly dislike, and if he broke the rules, I'd love to see that whole program go down in flames.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I get why being a good Christian means we should lay off. Nobody is saying he's a terrible guy (at least I'm not), but he has been running a shady program for years now (Mo Clarett, Terrell Pryor) and never gets dinged by the NCAA. Meanwhile, Michigan has players stretch for 3 minutes and it's all over ESPN and we're subject to NCAA sanctions.
But then again, I am Jewish.

I disagree, if the accusations being raised about him and the program are true then how can you say is he a good coach, person, christian, etc.?
I am sure he has done great things in the community and I personally respect him for supporting gays in sports. However, part of being good at a any job involves "doing it the right way" and not cheating or looking the other way to get and/or stay ahead.
like you say, BUT the problem I see with him is that he looks the other way too often when his players are getting in trouble or some unethical stuff goes on behind the scenes. He's also soft when he has to make a hard decision. Maybe it's because he's a "great Christian" or just too nice. As an example, look at that awful incident back in 2004 when his linebacker Robert Reynolds was caught on national TV choking Wisconsin QB Jim Sorgi at the end of a play. Sorgi was hurt so bad he had to leave the game and had trouble talking for hours afterward. For a crime that could have had a "civilian" tried for assault with intent to commit bodily harm, Reynolds gets a measley one game suspension. Should have been kicked off the team.
Also, I hate to play the "what would Bo/Woody do" game, but I would put money on Pryor no longer being the QB at OSU if he had sold gold pants on one of Woody's teams.
RR sat our only punter for a violation of team rules before the biggest game of his career here and Tressel played Pryor and Co. in the Sugar Bowl. I think that was a very poor decision Tressel made, putting winning over integrity.
now, i know that there is no such thing as a clean program, but osu is so obviously dirty. living here in chicago, i hear from all big 10 alumni fan bases. most hate UM for their success and/or perceived arrogance. most hate osu for their success and/or cheating ways.
you sound like one of those locals in the 1920s who supported mobsters because they were so nice to the general public where they were located; totally neglecting all the crime and dispair they caused others. i'm sure the "godfather" types were good christians too.

Is it bad that I am almost Giddy about this upcoming press conference. The unfortunate thing is that my expectations are so high that there is no way that I am not disappointed.
I think my expectations are pretty reasonable.
NCAA storms the press conference and says that due to sanctions, OSU must forfeit the last ten seasons of football and lose every possible scholarship. Recruits swarm to Michigan in such a rush that we are forced to deal with oversigning. The NCAA sees us work around oversigning and decides to look into the SEC and what they're doing down there. The entire SEC (with the exception of teams who don't oversign) loses every possible scholarship. More players flock to Michigan.
Michigan wins the next 15 national championships without losing a game in the process while I enjoy many Five Guys burgers like the one I am eating right meow.

Go, but only if they don't manage to hire Urban Meyer instead. If that happens, this could turn into an even bigger nightmare for us.
I don't think I would like Urban Meyer as their coach, and his name is already popping up on some OSU sites that I have been checking out today for my own entertainment. But honestly, why does everyone assume he wants the job? Because he coached two years there and got a master's there? He's still got health issues and he still has kids, so the issues that caused him to leave Flordia are still there for the forseable future. Am I missing something? Or is it all wishful thinking on OSU's part?

From his resignation flip-flop last year, he seems like a guy who would have a difficult time staying away from the game, health issues notwithstanding. And at 46, there's no way that he's done coaching. The Ohio State job is the kind of opportunity that doesn't open up every day and given his ties to OSU and his roots in Ohio, it's the perfect situation for him to get back into coaching. I think he would deem the negative PR and backlash from Florida fans worth it and take the job in a second if they offered it to him (which they would be stupid not to).
Having said that, it's looking like Tressel's not going anywhere, so it's probably a moot point.
We have proven we can beat Urban Meyer.
How do you think that game would have turned out if Lloyd wasn't retiring? And how do you think that season would have turned out if the team was healthy and had played up to its potential in every game like it did in that game?

Fair enough, but it's still only one game. We've proven that we can beat Urban Meyer, but not that we can beat him consistently. No one has been able to beat him consistently. Given his record over the past 10 years, you can't deny that he's one of the two or three best coaches in college football. Coupled with the fact that he's an OSU alum, a former OSU assistant, and a native of Ohio, having to face a coach with his resume in The Game every year would be downright terrifying.
