Tressel says OH recruits to leave OH "not significant"

Submitted by BlueKoj on

Tressel says UM is "a ways away" from OH's level. I do think JH will need time to go undefeated in the B1G and compete for NCs, but Tressel also said the OH recruiting door has been closed and remains closed, and that those who have left have not been significant.

Composite top-10 OH recruits: 2012 Bolden, Kalis, Wormley, Wilson...2013 Thomas, Charlton, McCray, Butt. Throw in Henry, Gedeon, Smith and all the others and it's time to be significant on November 28.

This block quote is from the paper that shall go linkless for the sanity of this thread.

"The door got closed on the real high majority of any of the Ohio kids leaving Ohio to go there or anywhere else," Tressel said  "If you think about some of the tough times we had ... you look at the stars of (Michigan) teams, and those players were from here. That door has closed. If you look back and see what has snuck out of the door, it isn't significant. That door is still closed. If it remains closed, we'll have a real chance to enjoy some of the good successes we've had in that rivalry."

EDIT: 1) this implies Hoke's OH recruits are not significant and 2) implies that the only way for UM to get to OH's level is to beat OH recruiting in OH. I think its time for UMs OH guys to be significant and I don't agree that the only path to an NC is through OH (although, OH is one of the key states with FL, TX, CA...and MI (UM must keep the best).

Please just keep giving the team more bulletin board material. Seriously, please do it. I want it to keep getting thrown their way so much about how OSU is just so much better that when it comes time to actually play OSU, the team enters Bobby Boucher mode and power-bombs everyone wearing scarlet and grey.

I don't trust anything that liar has to say, he has zero credibility. Even former osu coaches are afraid. Harbaughsmells blood in the water.

Tresses is a hypocrite. The fact that he has anything to say about football recruiting is comical, especially when it is patently false like this.

It’s real easy to say all of this stuff while Michigan isn’t winning very much. We’re probably finding it harder to get the top recruits from various Midwest states that use to be goldmines for us. We haven’t been a very successful program lately. It’s pretty much all about winning and nothing more. When Michigan gets back to playing good, then we can really judge how well OSU has Ohio locked down. Tressel is talking some cocky shit, but OSU is just receiving the natural recruiting benefits from winning while Michigan has been struggling. Duh.

I can't believe the President of such an institution would say things like that about an institution that he does not work for.  Surely at some point during his PHD program they talked about ethics.

F--- Tressel comment. The door is not shut on Michigan for OH recruiting. Furthermore, Tressel is a proven liar and hypocrite, a corrupt coach with a thin veil of grandfatherly appearances. Only a buckeye would still revere this douchebag.

I'll never pay mind to any word that comes out of that lying cheater's mouth, ever, and won't start here.  What I will say is that sure, Michigan is not going to be able to rise to the top again via Top 5 recruiting classes, because we've dug too big of a mediocre hole.  We'll rise to the top again by finally having a coach who can get more out of his players than their star rating - something we haven't had around here since Lloyd in his prime, if that.  What Tressel says doesn't matter.  What matters is Harbaugh is going to do as Dantonio has done, and coach UP his talent, but the difference is Michigan's recruiting ceiling far exceeds MSU's, so once Harbaugh has us back to prominence, the sky will be the limit, unlike the ceiling Michigan State will always face as a second tier recruiting program.

I guess I disagree a bit about MSU's ceiling. The more they win the higher that ceiling becomes. It's something we're going to have to keep in mind in the future in recruiting. MSU just made a splash in Texas. The year before they did it in California. Kids will start to take notice. We have to start competing and getting some big wins if we want to compete with OSU and MSU. I'm not afraid of them, but we have to be realistic about the landscape.

C'mong man... For all their success, their class this year is 29th on ESPN.  Even when we were 3-9 we were recruiting at a higher star level, we just didn't have the coaches to scout proper talent and coach it up.  Further, MSU has reached their ceiling, and with Harbaugh's arrival, and the imminent resurgence of Penn State, they will be coming back down where they belong.  This next year you'll start seeing signs of this now with Narduzzi gone as well.  They'll be good again, but the times are a changing, and again, the big difference between Michigan and MSU flat out, we're a blue chip program, they are not.  Our ceiling is far higher.  Hasn't been for ten years, but when we come around, we'll be in a higher stratosphere than State has known since the 60's, and vying for NC's as well as top 5 recruiting classes.

Their ceiling was 13-1, Rose Bowl win, and two pretty lousy PIs at ND away from playing for a NC in 2013.  Just stop with this ceiling crap.  Do you feel Baylor and TCU have the same ceiling?  Both could have been in the playoff last year and 1 game away from a NC appearance.  They are no different than MSU.

Isn't that the point? Baylor and TCU will be coming back down to earth if Texas ever gets their head out of their ass and hires their "Jim Harbaugh." The point wasn't that they can't have an amazing year, but having sustained success will be very tough for them the same way it will be very tough for MSU

Nah.  MSU has a ceiling.  Period.  Get over it.  They are not a blue chip program, and thus their recruiting will always be lackluster.  They can have a few good years just like say, Gonzaga or Butler had a few good years in hoops, but would you ever categorize those teams with say, Kentucky or Kansas in MBB? No.  In CFB, Michigan has only one blue chip program, and that's Michigan.  Winningest, best tradition, most Big Ten titles, most Super Bowl MVPs, best song, biggest stadium, etc., etc.  MSU will always be an also ran in the traditional pecking order. And 5 - 6 good years at our expense doesn't change a thing, especially now that Harbaugh is here to bring us back to the level we belong at.

Well I guess no more OH recruits for us because Jim Tressel said so. I'm sure Harbaugh and staff will just stop recruiting that state because there is an imaginary wall between us...

"Personally, I think they're a ways away from being at the level where there's going to be a Ten Year War. I think they've got some work to do to get to that. But if anyone can do it, Jim Harbaugh can. He'll do a great job."

I will say, as indifferent as I am to anything which Tressel may now say in his post-coaching days now, if this is as close to a compliment as we're going to get from him on the quality of the hire, then I suppose I can at least take that. I suppose it is very difficult to get press coverage as the president of Youngstown State anyway.

He was certainly a career-long cheater behind the scenes, but he got the nickname "Senator Tressel" because he rarely, if ever, said anything truly inflammatory about OSU's rivals or opposing players.

But now he's basically said to every Ohio kid on the Michigan roster, "Ha-ha, you suck." Something tells me Mr. Harbaugh isn't going to let that motivational opportunity go unused.

Dear FUCK_MGOBLOG,

You seem like a stand-up guy!  Please don't leave and go to 247Sports or any other place.  Stay right here FOREVER. Please? Do you like balsamic vinegar and koalas?

I mean he says his post isn't racist, then talks about dividing the team into two categories BLACKS and WHITES.   Let's take a good ole look at the definiton of racism shall we?

"a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others."

Not exactly the smartest "gentleman" to post on this blog and that's saying a lot coming from me (see ridiculous obsession with balsamic vinegar and all things koala and other weird stuff I've said)
