Maybe, but man- I really hate the idea of him going out at 9-1 against us. That will never not piss me off.  Saying "but you cheated," I get it (in hypothetical world where he gets hit with 10.1 infraction and is ousted). . . but, well, they can say that about when we beat them in the NCAA tourney during Fab 5 year 1, and, frankly, it doesn't. . . matter, at least in affecting my thoughts as a Michigan fan about it and doesn't diminish my feeling of satisfaction in thinking about it. I don't want to be on the other side of that. I hate the fact that he's dominated. Regardless of the infractions, it's still a bitter pill, and I'd like more cracks at him as a program.

I think this is even more pathetic than the original preposterous news conference. Damage control done the worst way possible. So now you admit it's a bigger deal? But you've made it seem like it's the COACH who's asked for the penalty like some kind of penance? Who runs the OSU Athletic Department? Don't answer.

the university has no discipline for its coaches and when your AD says i hope he doesnt fire me there needs to be some changes. I hope the NCAA hammers them with sanctions for the slap in the face they gave them with the 2 game suspension. They need to fire him to save the face of their university. but i like how this is all going to unfold, hoke takes over, they find out tressel lied, and he is now likely to get fired

I'd love for Tressel and his sanctimony to remain.  The important thing is that this program (and its 375 self-admitted infractions over the last 10 years) be banned from bowls for at least the next two years, and also be stripped of five scholarships, for symmetry's sake.

I hope Sweatervest remains as the patron/martyr saint of TSDS.  Let him preside over the ruins of what he has wrought.  I like Dan Berstein's "quote" from Tressel's god-like book:

"I’m reminded of another quote, from another venal, bespectacled liar.“I believe in two things: discipline and the Bible. Here you’ll receive both. Put your trust in the Lord; your ass belongs to me. Welcome to Shawshank.”'  So said Warden Samuel Norton. That’s who Jim Tressel is – the worst kind of bible-banging fraud, enriching himself under a guise of piety and Christianity while he cheats at every stop.

Click your heels together three times Jimmy.  You aren't in Kansas anymore.  A one year suspension to him and a three year probation to the program with a loss of bowl games and scholarships would be a good start.  But then again this is the NCAA, and they may settle for a hug from Tressel and a promise not to get caught again.

Because it's one thing to not be fully aware of what players are doing. It's another to know and then lie. You think anyone is going to put up a multi-billion dollar investment and immediately take someone who is a proven and admitted liar to be the face of that investment? What if this were steroid use, or gambling? How would an NFL owner know how to trust someone with the ethical standards Tressel has.

That, and it's not NFL coach hiring season.

Best of luck Tressel - I think the NCAA won't be hoodwinked.  This isn't something you can brush under the rug by missing games against Colorado, Miami (YTM), and MSU.

I was expecting something like this from Tressel camp in the wake of the all this Peal talk.  Hopefully the NCAA sees past the "look how well I punished myself" attempt and smacks him hard for the insult.

It was ok when it was only two but now that the players' appeal was rejected he's finally trying to be "fair". This guy is as good as gone. I agree he is running scared. Is the fine still $250K?

Hope he is able to sell his sweater vests on e bay to pay his bills. Too bad he didn't get a chance to punch out a Clemson player to get his ass fired.

For you it shouldn't matter if he keeps his job

OSU is a reflection of the state of Ohio and its people like few other colleges are: many of Ohio's residents tie up their own self-images and identities with the Buckeyes. And now the man leading them is a Liar, and that will not change. You need to think about that.

I'm going on the assumption that you are an OSU fan, and in which case, you should be seriously ashamed.  I didn't believe it at first, but really, Tressel lied.  He knowingly played ineligable players and benefited with a Big Ten championship and a Sugar Bowl win.  Considering the image Tressel has cultivated for himself, and consequently thrust on himself by the fanbase, you really should be ashamed.  You should demand for his resignation.  This was an egreigous error on his part, and even though is a great coach, this really shows that he was sold out his morals and integrity for wins.  You should want a better representation for your school and program.  I would want the same for UM.

A 250k fine is 1/14 of his base salary.  Even if he doesn't get paid for the 5 games (about 1.5 mill) he's still making 1.75 mill.  Yes, it's half his salary, which is a lot, but he ain't hurtin'.

Also, that really just means OSU saves money, which they can probably spend elsewhere, such as basketball players or something, I dunno.  Either way, the whole fine/loss of money isn't a big factor.  The fine should be higher, he shouldn't get paid for the games, but the money should go somewhere outside the athletic department and not straight to the NCAA.  Non-athletic scholarship, Japanese relief, other charity, me, dinosaurs, etc.

I agree with a couple of the above posters.  This was a premeditated move by Gee, Smith, and Tressel.  I could be wrong and the media backlash on their weak-ass sanctions could have caused this;  but it wouldn't surprise me if this was the plan all along to make Tressel look like the Moral Standard that he claims to be.

Fuck Jim Tressel.

I can't see Tressel and Mr. "I hope he doesn't fire me" Gee coming up with the 250k and 2 games thinking "we'll take an ass beating from the media for weeks and then move JT's suspension to 5 games so we look better". It looks like they're desperate and I expect the non Columbus media to see through this...

Nice timing by the vest on the first day of the NCAA tournament, however.

This is truly great....    it appears the waters are parting for us, to regain our stronghold.    And it is truly amazing that Tressel is crass enough to think that the NCAA is so naive in this latest ploy.

These are still meaningless penalties.  OSU will still be a 2 loss or better team and make it to a good, high-paying bowl game.

The NCAA has to follow its USC penalties and dock OSU scholarships and even consider a postseason ban for this year--in acknowledgement that this should have ben done last year.

I don't think the penalties should be quite as severe as USC's, and I don't believe in vacating wins (aka photoshopping someone out of the wedding pics).

So I think:

24 scholarships/3 years

1 year bowl game ban

Is sufficient and appropriate.

Michigan, of course, would benefit from both, by picking up a couple Ohio kids each year and by likely moving one place up the bowl-berth food chain.   But that's not the point.  The point is that these self-imposed sanctions mean little to nothing for OSU's program, and the NCAA needs to make sure that the punishment deters the program from further violations.
