According to "Tremendous" Derrick Green's visit may be much more just a courtesy call. No guarantees or gut feelings, but "there's a lot of smoke building with this situation".

You wanted to talk to me, Mr. Seaver?
Part of an interview with Green from the link;
"From last night, when I did talk with Derrick, we also had the following exchange, which I did not post yesterday for fear of building the hype a bit too much:
Me: You gonna head up to Michigan any earlier now that Ohio State is out?
Derrick: Yes, I'll be there Friday
Me: Staying three nights now?
Me: Any chance of something big happening this weekend? Gotta ask (lol)
Derrick: Maybe, and I think they (Ohio State I'm assuming) knew it. "
F5's at the ready men.
BUCKLED. This is just not fair to the rest of the Big Ten. Hoke is a magician. I wonder if that is legal.
Just in case. I would hate to be unbuckled during a commitment.
With all these man-beasts being assembled, when future opponents talk about "leaving it all out on the field", they'll be referring to their own blood and body parts.
Live Free or Die
Green and Treadwell to finish this class? Well, that's about as good as it could possibly get.
I agree with that outlook. Treadwell and Green are both elite skill position players which we are a little thin with in this class. I wonder if the fact that the coaches called McQuay and put a little pressure on him to commit before this weekend means that they feel they have a need for another safety more than they have a need for another RB. I know this spot is all about BPA but I always assumed that Green was a higher perceived recruit than McQuay. Maybe not. I would be thrilled with either of them.
Michigan clearly wanted another RB, but I think it's pretty clear they also wanted another DB. Both are about equal talent, so the coaches were telling LM3 that he needed to decide to. IMO, there is only really one open spot for BPA. The other spot is for WR (and possibly LT or bank it), this is the only true best player available slot.
Maybe he was told this before Douglas committed. The staff might have been thinking McQuay, Green and Treadwell, but didn't want to lose out on Douglas for just a chance at McQuay.
Maybe . . . And maybe Mark Dantonio doesn't hate Michigan with the fire of 10,000 Suns.
I love how a big name pops up and is visiting and everyone considers him a lock or Michigan lean. This is far from over.
People feed off of other peoples positivity and end up disapointed. I hope we land Green, but I wouldn't listen to a blog posters opinion of the situation. If i've learned anything from recruiting, don't develope an attachment to a highly ranked player just because he's visiting.
So we think said blogger just made that bit up?
I've noticed that same response from mgobloggers but this is a blog with diehard wolverine fans not an unbiased news service. I think that kind of attitude comes with the territory. If you can't be a little optimistic here where can you?
...Would you 'respect' his opinion more if he had his own domain instead of a blog? I don't think anyone (except for maybe Tom) connects with recruits as well as the Tremendous guys
You need to include Mr. Webb in that list.
Half of the post is speculation and justfying why he thinks the kid will commit. I respect tremendous and think they do a great job, I just think they hype up these gullible optimistic fans a little too much.
Oh Derrick Green will be in AA for 3 days? He's definitely going to Michigan!
If he doesn't commit, I will have to hear his name in every recrruiting thread for the next 2 years.
All of this aside, I think he's a beast. and I will personally apologize to Tremendous and everyone else if he commits any time soon.
we get to do it again next year! I don't think you like wearing your belt.
My seat belt? I'm the kind of guy that wears it but puts the strap behind my back so no one can see I'm wearing it. Don't get me wrong, I really really hope he commits this weekend. But I wouldn't even call Green a Michigan lean at this point. My opinion matters less than someone who interacts with players, obviousely. But after following recruiting for 4 years, we tend to get a little too attached to any 4/5* guy that pays us a visit.
Whatever, who am I kidding, Green will probably commit this weekend.
It's a lot more than just "he's visiting."
Love the positivity but he's not a wolverine in a bag just yet.
Sorry, it's not old yet
Did you even read the interview? there wasn't really an opinion given on the situation. Just layed out the interview and let you connect the dots (which, evidently you couldn't do). Obviously, you can't expect every big time prospect to commit when they visit. But when they are asked if "something big" may happen on the weekend they are visiting, and their reply is "maybe, I think they (Ohio, the team we were kind of competing with for his services) knew it," I think you can forgive us for being a little excited.
Can we stop with the sexual references on a topic about high school kids? Jeez, this thread is creepy.
This is what happens after 2 weeks of non-stop Sandusky talk.
I will agree with you that the sexual talk about high school players is a tad creepy, but you can always guarantee that old man Magnus will come out and shake his cane for about anything. If there's a thread with a good amount of comments on it he'll be there to complain.
Well, nobody else felt like attempting to put the kibosh on strangely sexual comments until I did. Somebody's got to do the dirty work.
Nevermind, keep reading. Magnus is called out properly a bit lower on the thread.
Someone says something like that on almost every thread about good recruiting news. And every time I feel dirty just reading it. I'm the last person to THINK OF THE CHILDREN, but with the amount of real shit recruits put up with from overly intense fans (including actual pedos- hi OSU) these comments just aren't funny.
Co-signed. It's immature and disgusting. And not to mention, it reflects poorly on our fanbase and this blog.
Ok, does anybody else also want to ruin my childhood today?
Yes, but I can't think of a good way to do so right now. I'll get back to you.
And the more egregious displays have been removed.
Oh, sorry, I might have started that with my 3am "boner" posting. That was meant in the "making up slang after a few beers is fun" way and really not a sexual way.
Says the guy with the half-football, half-pr0n blog.
... who posts pictures of unknowing, scantily clad Michigan students for public online consumption.
But if you go on a site called "Touch the Banner", you should know what you might be getting.
(I mean, you didn't really think it was a football reference?)
Most of said posts are a couple words or pics and add no substance to the discussion.
It is getting creepy.
To me, it's sad that some of the same people who wanted to bury Joe Paterno and PSU for what Jerry Sandusky did have no problem insinuating that they are aroused when they hear that another 17 year-old is about to commit to the Maize and Blue.
This makes mgoblog look worse than RCMB. Is that what anyone here really wants?
A little bit of restraint goes a long way.
I don't spend my time agreeing with Magnus so much but you're both correct on this.
Just enough already.
I believe it
To whom did you respond? It's someone who was caved and who is only visible on the mobile app, I'm assuming.
Leaving out the word "than" in your description completely changes the meaning.
"It makes absolutely no sense (especially with there being two spots available now) for Michigan to put any kind of ultimatum on McQuay unless they were relatively confident in an imminent commitment." - from the Tremendous article
This was mentioned in the BBQ thread, but I to agree here considering how this staff has handled this rather incredible 2013 class to date - McQuay wouldn't say that unless someone in Ann Arbor was reasonably sure something was about to happen. Derrick Green certainly would be a great way to fill one of the two remaining spots, so if this is the fire that goes with the building smoke, if you will, it's a good fire.
To mcquay, wouldn't that imply that the staff preferred LM3 to Green for what amounts to the final open spot? (given the belief that the staff is truly holding the FINAL spot for LT)
I would have thought that Green was more important as the final piece at this point, given Douglas' verbal earlier this week.
Well, for all we know, they told Green the same thing. Or will bring it up this weekend because Green is on campus and McQuay is not. I wouldn't read into it.
I agree. One thing I think we've seen from these coaches is that they're very good at using scarcity to their advantage. If you can credibly tell a recruit that now might be his last chance, you get him to think about whether he's really willing to risk losing his spot at Michigan. That only works if there's a real chance that the spot gets taken, so there's often a very good player on the outside left looking in (Anzalone, Schutt, O'Daniel, etc.).
If you tell McQuay that his place could be taken this weekend, you force him to think about things, which only increases the chance that you walk away with one of these two guys. I wouldn't be surprised if the coaches would be thrilled with either one and are just trying to maximize the probability of getting one of them.
if the Green scenario were true, wouldn't the staff have told LM3 that the class is full and the offer is not commitable?
Why would they tell him his offer is no longer commitable before they had someone else? Now THAT doesn't make any sense. If he (McQuay) really wanted to be a wolverine, they were giving him the opportunity to commit before this weekend. If this wasn't true, then why on earth woud the staff be giving a 5-star recruit that we've been recruiting very heavily, an altimatum to commit this weekend or lose your spot??? The only reason you would do something like that, is if you had a pretty darn good feeling about the possiblitly of a commitment on the weekend.
True. IMO they told LM3 that they needed him to get off the fence and commit to a spot or a guaranteed spot would be used this weekend. Something may open up later, but Hoke couldn’t guarantee it. So I am DEFINITELY ready to Buckle-Up!
but I don't feel like getting into the details, so let's just see what happens - frankly, I'd be happy with either LM3 or Green for that spot.
I've always known he's an elite level running back, but when did he become the #1 runningback on rivals?
He improved at catching the ball out of the backfield and showed he was very good at blocking LBs during camp settings. Mike Farrell now views him as a 3 down back and bumped his rating.
Everyone thinks he's elite, but his speed appears to be a determining factor. I've seen everything from 4.31 to almost 4.6. Rivals thinks he's a 4.4, while Scout calls out his breakaway speed as a weakness.
I think scout is more accurate than Rivals in Green's case.
Regardless of what Green did without pads, if you watch his junior film, when playing better defenses, he very rarely breaks away from the defenders in the second level.
And you can tell which defense is better in what way. He cant break out a run everytime he runs the ball.
I have a hunch when the RB is bigger than the opposing team's DTs and DEs, said opposing defense may not be that great.
Also, when said DTs and DEs are 10 yards in the defensive secondary getting or in the process of being pancaked three seconds after the snap of the football, again, may not be D1 caliber players Green is up against. There is DEFINITELY a difference in the quality of defensive opposition Green is going against in some of his tape. You can see it in the size of the players, the position of the line of scrimmage a couple of seconds after the snap, and the speed/angles the LBs and DBs take on Green.
Do I expect Green to have Ty Isaac-esque runs every snap? No. But Isaac doesn't face the same caliber of player Green does in Southern Virginia.
Hermitage HS is no pushover. They are a power in Richmond. HS Football in Richmond VA is pretty good and VT and UVa recruit Richmond very hard. Hermitage has produced solid (and NFL) talent in recent years. Darren Sharper, Jamie Sharper, 1st rounder Duane Brown, Shawn Barber (also not sure if you've heard of Curtis Grant--O$U LB'er?) and a number of other D-1 prospects have come out of Hermitage. Other schools in RIchmond that Hermitage plays have produced a good amount of talent. David Terrell, Brandon Minor, Michael Robinson (PSU), Russel Wilson, off the top of my head... there are a lot more.
I don't know a ton about Joliet but i'm sure Joliet Cathotic is a great team. Hermitage and Richmond public school FB is decent and i can assure you that the DL's at those schools are not tiny guys under 200 lbs. Hermitage also plays Fork Union which has produced a ton of talent. The high light tape you saw probably featured small private school or inner city Richmond schools but is not the norm for Richmond HS football. Green probably feasted on those guys and had a lot of highlights but that doesn't mean he only face little guys all the time. If he commits to Michigan, I'll be watching all of Mr. Green's home games and some of his road games in person so i'm interested to see if he improved from last season.
Also, note that Richmond is not in Southern Virginia. Richmond is in Central Virginia. There really is nothing in Southern Virginia.
"There really is nothing in Soutern Virginia."
...unless you count Newport News/Chesapeake/etc. as being part of Southern Virginia. There's quite a bit of talent in that area.
Don't know how the guy above views it, but I always just thought of that area as "Virginia Beach" and not southern VA. I think of southern VA as like south-central sort of area, and there is nothing there
Heh; I live southwest of Baltimore. I go through Richmond on my way to the OuterBanks. Once I go south of Fairfax, EVERYTHING is Southern Virginia.
I hope I was being clear re; my respect of the competition of high school football in Richmond and point south. That area is regularly raided by the SEC/ACC powers for talent (especially see the 2014 class)
I went to HS near Richmond for 9th & 10th grade. I remember several 50+ to 0 beatdowns we received from the Hermitages, Huguenots, and Prince Georges of the area
Didn't Mike Farrel say a couple of weeks ago to watch out for Michigan in his recruitment. If i am recalling this correctly that is a pretty big positive, becuase he is portrayed to hate michigan. He was right about Levenberry when a lot thought he was coming hear.
Ultimatly Derrick Green is a mystery...He could be doing this for attention, but he also may be serious.
Greeen's first unofficial was to Ohio State. Green 'unoficially' visited Ohio State twice. It is clear to me that Ohio State was definitely at or very near the top of Greens favorites.
With OSU out, we very well may be looking good here.
The only thing that is difficult to see in comparison to other Universities is how many resources Michigan has extended towards Green compared to other programs (letters, visits, phone calls etc).
I guess i am a little surprised Green has a chance to drop to us at the BBQ because i did not think he knew enough about us and that we never really seemed to stand out above everyone else - we were just a team down his list still in the hunt.
that after Ty Isaac went to USC, UM put a full-court press on Green as our #1 RB target, and have been in contact with him as much as is allowed.
This is accurate, although Michigan was really pushing hard after Green before Isaac committed. Same goes for Jordan Wilkins.
This is good to know then, and makes a Green verbal to us this weekend much, much more possible in my mind than i originally thought.
I was not sure how hard and to what extent Michigan had been recruting him - great to hear.
rushing touchdowns confusing for announcers when Michigan plays MSU.
I'll get excited if/when he actually commits. Tremendous does a good job of getting interviews, but I'm struggling to remember a time when they were anything but hyper-positive about a recruit. I prefer Magnus's approach, because it keeps my expectations realistic.
Yeah, who wouldn't prefer a sort of recruit related nihilsm in analysis with a focus on limitation of hope and expectation for young people.
Parent: "Son, do that next set...you can go to Michigan and do great things!"
Recruit: "Not so sure dad, while Rivals gave me a 5.9 and 4 stars Magnus is concerned with my lack of fluid hips and questionable closing speed".
Parent: Who? Well f#$# that f#%ing Magnus, I'm calling Lichtenfels and VanHaaren immediately...you need some positives going forward. Remember, you were only being recruited by every major player in the B1G.
He points out valid concerns that recruits need to work on. He's not grading recruits relative to the H.S. competition, it's based on a standard of play seen in college. Not many recruits contribute very quickly, and not many turn out to be all B1G competitors. It's not like he's making stuff up.
If he commits at the BBQ, great, but it's good to keep in mind that recruits have a tendency to tell recruiting analysts who are affiliated with specific schools what they think that analyst wants to hear.
To be honest, this is the one assessment I'd agree with, and Derrick is actually a good example of one of those types.
The closing paragraph of what I wrote sums up what I think. The rest is solid facts on what's happened leading up to this weekend.
I thought I read somewhere (don't remember where) that the coaches wanted McQuays decision because they wanted to move on Douglas. Since McQuay wasn't ready to commit they offered Douglas figuring why take the chance and miss out on a quality db. They knew they two other scholarships.
And yet they still continued to recruit McQuay after Douglas committed. The real reason to temper expectations on Green is he said that "he just got that feeling" after his Auburn visit.
Yeah my point is that the whole McQuay thing had nothing to do with Green.
Of course that's possible. Following recruiting since the days when Anthony Thomas committed (thank you Mr. Sandeep Vijay), seeing everything a recruit says your way is a very dangerous thing. No one but McQuay, his people (parents, coaches, friends, family) and the UM coaches really know what was meant by that comment. That doesn't mean the speculation can't be any more fun!
That could be a good or bad feeling. We don't know.
boredguy, you're making a connection on two separate pieces. The first was Ross commits, and two days later Mcquay was told there may not be a scholarship available after this weekend... meaning the BBQ......meaning Devon Allen or Green taking the last available. Seems clear.
"They wanted to move on the Penn State commit and they informed us on Tuesday. It came down all of a sudden. But Leon is not ready to commit," Leon McQuay, Jr. (Leon's father)
His connection seems to be correct.
When is the BBQ ?
Tomorrow I believe.
in the hope of catching a whiff of what's cooking inside?
Ok, that's just weird.
He'll be all UM because he is butt hurt at OhioSt. and wants them to pay for their insolence.
If he's butthurt over osu, it's only because he didn't get the chance to tell Urban, thanks, but no thanks.
I wouldn't care if he is all butthurt. Maybe he'll make them pay for their insolence by averaging 2,000 yards/yr for 4 years and bust Biatkabutuka's single game record by hitting the Bucks for 400!!
I'd have to say that if he averaged 2k a year for 3 years, there wouldn't be a 4th year. But I'd totally be ok with that!
I guess I didn't give that much thought. Actually there may not be a second year if he hit 2k in year one. Not sure how I'd feel about that, unless they run the table.
You can't declare for the draft until after your 3rd year out of high school...
Thanks for the refresher. For some reason I thought Adrian Peterson came out after his freshman year, but I guess that was because he got hurt the next two.
Yeah, I'm getting pretty sick of all these football players being one-and-done type players. None of the good ones are staying 3-4 years anymore. They should implement a rule where an athlete must be out of high school for 3 years before being able to play in the NFL...
I'll concede that Biakabutuka holds the tsiO single-game record, but the single-game rushing record belongs to Ron Johnson.
I would, of course, love to be able to say I was at the game where that record was broken.
I was actually referring to the single game rushing record according to the "TallyWolverine's Guide to Modern Michigan Football Statistics for Floridians 1975-Present." It hasn't exactly been flying off the shelves as much as i expected.
After striking out the last several years on elite backs I would love to land Green. Except I just don't see him committing this weekend. There's good evidence of something possibly brewing. But him only having been here once before, without talking to Coach Hoke, I don't see how he could have enough confidence in Michigan to pull the trigger. But I'd love nothing better for someone to end up telling me this weekend, 'I told you so'.
That's the thing that is promising in my opinion. He's only been here once and never spoke to Coach Hoke in person and still has us that high on his list. I know he has said in a couple different articles how excited he is to be able to talk to Hoke in person. These factors all coming together could seal the deal theoretically this weekend. Here's to hoping!
He's only narrowed his list to 13.
Agree with brown bear, Green has consistently stated all through his recruitment that he wants to get back to Michigan to talk to coach Hoke. If that's all he's going to need to seal the deal, then I think we're looking good.
Troll harder. It's a great value to the board.
This is the least comical post I've ever read from you.
However, due to the fact that I agree with your assessment on Green and that I now realize you are in fact human... upvote complete.
He's probably not old enough to be President yet.
As a few of you have said, tempering expectations with Green is the best move. I've followed his recruitment for over a year an he never fails to rave about schools to their fan blogs. At various points Bama, UM, OSU, Clemson, Oklahoma, Auburn, Va Tech and I think one or two more have been believed to be leaders. I'm not saying you guys won't get him, but he's playing the recruiting game more than almost anyone this year. Also, I can't be 100% positive, but some of his comments are that of a mad teenager who's childhood favorite school just told him they are going in a different direction.
I'm going to take your advice and temper my expectations. I am going to go about my business as usual and not check back in until signing day with the understanding that Green HAS committed to Michigan.
It is interesting that Urb waited until a potential commitment to stop recruiting. Guess it won't be a head to head loss then?
Or perhaps he knew they wouldn't be able to land him anyway, and just wanted to save face - they seem to have many non-commitable offers, especially those which U-M lands.
For a dream wrapped inside an enigma, wrapped inside rumors, balanced on the whims of a teenager, it's pretty appealing....
If I've heard that once, I've heard it a thousand times....wait, WHAT?
Didn't see it mentioned, so I figured I'd note that Anzalone evidently went down to Florida for their Friday Night Lights camp (this is the one that was the subject of much discussion re: Dawson). Maybe it's nothing, but could be a real problem for ND.
Notre Dame commit Alex Anzalone in Gainesville again & Working out at Florida's Friday Night Lights. http://florida.247sports.com/Board/14/Friday-Night-Lights-Live-Updates-1... …

I think his dad is a Florida alum, so it might just be for fun...or ND gets hosed by another recruit.
Just needed something to do until Gridiron Kings started Today. In a interview he even said the UF coaches aren't really recruiting him they just said if you reconsider call us. He then reiterated he is 100% committed to Notre Dame. Nothing to worry about. PSU actually came in 2nd.
What is BPA?
when google doesn't actually get you the right answer
Bisphenol A - A polymer found in plastics that some think may leak hormone like substances into food stored within it leading the FDA to ban it's use in baby bottles and encourage food manufactures to not use it in it's packaging.
Either that or it's Best Player Available.
Thank you for the definition.
I haven't stopped hitting f5 since Dawson put us on commit watch 2 weeks ago. Unless Dawson is clairvoyant and knew the PSU situation, I still don't think I'm wasting my time.
I fully expect one of my F5 attempts to result in one of these this weekend
Signing day is all that matters. If he wants us then, that's when it counts.
I've checked the blog too many times today in hope of a Hello: post
I think everyone is doing that.
I can't stop watching this gif. It's mesmerizing.
'juz finished having a #GREAT talk with coach hooke #michigan'
I'd expect nothing less
Who's coach Hooke? Is that coach Hoke's non-pointing alter-ego who dreams of defeating Peter Pan?
There we go.
If you subscribe to the notion that the coaches were going to fill the final two spots (assuming a 3rd spot is being held for Laquon) with the BAA then I don't think Ross fits that criteria. I think they knew they could get Ross but preferred McQuay and told him the spot was his if he committed know otherwise they would get Ross since no other BAA fit the CB spot that UM had a rilaible chance of getting. I also think the coaches had a much better shot at Green than everyone realized before the last 24 hrs and were holding a spot for him as well at least through the BBQ if not longer.
Looks like Michigan is out of it for mcquay. Florida state back in.
@TremendousUM: Read McQuay's quote "@SBNRecruiting: @McQuay31 Swaps #FSU For Michigan After Wolverines Push For Commitment http://t.co/fY6cMCPW"
Why do you think the offer was between McQuay and Ross. McQuay has already stated he was given until this weekend to commit. Ross gave his verbal on tuesday. They are obvi planning on someone hoping on board this weekend, otherwise they wouldn't have given him till the weekend to decide.
McQuay told them he wasn't going to make a decision by this weekend. After that, there was no reason to make Douglass wait. I don't know the actual timeline, but that makes sense to me.
I think is was always McQuay and Ross only came into the picture as a backup plan. By Thursday it was being reported that McQuay had dropped UM from his list due to #'s crunch. I think the coaches knew earlier that they weren't going to get him and went for Ross at that point.
It depends on whether the spoke with McQuay before or after they accepted the commitment from Ross. The timing is everthing.
Because this thread is so long, thought I'd pass the info along again. This seems to be what you're looking for.
"They wanted to move on the Penn State commit and they informed us on Tuesday. It came down all of a sudden. But Leon is not ready to commit."
-Leon's father, on why he apparently dropped Michigan. What's happened since, I don't know.
Shaq Wiggins is my new favorite Georgia Bulldog.
Shaq Wiggins trash talk game>>actual game but has line of the day to OhSt commit Jalin Marshall "Urban Meyer's gonna take your scholarship"
There is a thousand different speculations as to what happened. Not worth finding out.
Got a couple texts from recruits on campus right now saying good shot Green commits this weekend. Also, 2014 WR Artavis Scott mentioned.
"@SamWebb77: Positive vibes from visitors in Ann Arbor today. Reason enough for a commit watch. No gut feelings, but commitment is a real possibility now"
