Trade a Team for ND?

Submitted by joeyb on

Simple question: Do you think the Big X would ever kick a team out to make room for ND so that they wouldn't need to expand?

I was looking at proposed division layouts and realized that we already seem to have three 4-team divisions.

Michigan, MSU, OSU, PSU
Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, NW
Wisc, Minn, Iowa, Neb

The East and West divisions are obviously pretty strong, but the Central is filled with perpetual bottom-dwellers. If ND were to join the Big X, they would likely fit in this division, which would mean the Big X would need to bring in another team, 3 more teams, or kick a team out to have two even divisions. I think the first two have been talked about to death at this point, but I haven't heard any talk about relegating another team to the MAC.

I started to look at what those four teams offer. Purdue and Illinois are occasionally good at football, and are usually pretty good at basketball. NW hasn't been relevant in sports for a while, but they are one of the top schools in the conference.

Indiana, however, hasn't been relevant in any major sports for several years now, they have been at the bottom of the conference in football for who knows how long, and they are one of the weakest schools academically in the conference. It seems that they bring very little to the conference, yet get an equal share of the profits.

I'm not saying this will or should happen, but do you think that if Indiana continues down the path they are on right now, that the Big X could be thinking of this?

Indiana has one of the best basketball traditions in the conference.  They are just going through something similar to what our football team is (and basketball was for that matter) right now.

If there was a way to make ND's head any larger, kicking out a long time member of the conference for them would probably do it.

They are already irritating enough so no, this would be a horrible idea.

we should pull an Yost, and leave for the Big 12.  That way, we could be with who everyone really wanted (Texas), and face actual competition, other than OSU, PSU, and someone else.  Just my 3 cents.

It would destroy everything the B10 stands for.  All schools in the B10 are treated as equals, and kicking one out would go completely against that ideal.

I think the Big Ten is just looking to grow from here on out, I think that the other stuff we hear about (academics, tradition, rivalries etc) would keep the big Ten from booting members.

The big thing everyone talked about with expansion was football TV $$, but that's not the only thing the Big Ten looked at... Sure Indiana is not good at much right now, but they have a good B-school, a good football rival in Purdue, plenty of BBall history, and have been a member for years.

I thought the Big Ten handled this expansion stuff a lot better than the Big XII or Pac 10 - an obvious money grab. Ours looked to expand $$, without selling ourselves short

There has been, basically, a standing invite since the early 1990s.  They have said, "No thanks."  It is 100% their right to say no.  But, imagine how great the last 15 years would have been had ND joined at the same time as PSU.  We would have had 15 Big 10 title games.  ND would have played games against PSU, OSU, and Wisconsin on an almost yearly basis.   As a college football fan, that would have been great.

Instead, ND stayed independent and scheduled the Big Ten teams it chose.  Again - it is absoluely their right to do that.  But, the conference should not even consider kicking someone out of the conference to make room for ND.  They had their chance and let it pass them by.

No offense to the OP (and I get that its late June and all), but can we please stop with the ND to Big Ten (or X) posts?  Look folks, they just aren't joining.  They want to stay independent.  It may not make any sense to us, but it doesn't matter what we think.  We have a great 12th team with a storied history.  Leave the Irish alone!

Why would you pick IU of all schools.  And where would they go?  It makes no sense really.  I could not see the Big Ten giving up anyone.

does not need to join the Big 10 when they successfully use the league each year by playing M, MSU and Purdue. These long standing scheduled home and home rotations allow the Irish to stay close to home when they travel and are always sell outs when they play at home. ND has also played OSU, NW and PSU in the past as well.

If ND really wants to be an "independent" they should attempt to do so without playing a Big 10 team for an extended period of time.

Listen, I understand how profitable the relationship could be...rule the galaxy as father and son and all that...

But they have had the opportunity to join for about 20 years now, and they are not going to pull a Texas and no-lube rape us because we want to be their friend.  So as far as I am concerned, Notre Dame can go piss up a rope.

No member should, nor should they be asked to, leave . . . for any reason.  It's profitable for IU, Northwestern and everyone else to be members of the Big Ten.  They've been members for probably 60-70 years, longer for charter members.  Show me another example anywhere in college athletics where a member has been asked to leave a conference.  Hasn't happened.  Won't happen.  Especially to make room for Notre Dame, who isn't coming anyway.

When applying to schools for graduate school (in biology) Indiana actually ranks really high against the Big Ten. A ranking (from where, I can't remember) of all American universities went: 15. Michigan 15. Wisconsin 29. Indiana 29. Northwestern 29. Illinois 34. MSU 34. Minnesota 42. OSU 42. Penn St. 42. Purdue 48. Iowa For the record, Nebraska came in at 105th.

The only way I could imagine a member school being asked to leave is if it becomes a major, unrepentent rule-breaker.  You just don't ask a school that's been a part of your league for decades to scram.  Stability is one of our conference's strengths.
