Tour of Crisler and Big House

Submitted by Doctor Wolverine on

In preparation for the upcoming season, I reserved a spot on one of the Michigan Stadium and Crisler Center tours this week.  It is really a pretty incredible value at only $20 per person for a 2 hour tour of both facilities.  Here is a link if you are interested in getting more information or making your own reseration:

Consider this the official 2016 stadium tour story thread.  Anybody have any "Cool Story Bro" moments from one of these tours?  We are taking my 89yo grandpa (lifelong Michigan fan...grew up listening to Harmon play on the radio).  He is able to walk, but we'll probably use a wheelchair to help him keep up.  Is the tour pretty wheelchair accessible?  Any recommendations or things that you wish you would have known ahead of time?

Go Blue and thanks for the tips!

I did this tour 3 years ago and its the best $20 I've ever spent. Very relaxed and they dont rush you through at all. Locker room was awesome and even though it was raining running endzone to endzone was the highlight of my weekend (since the team proceeded to lose to Neb that weekend). My wife and I snuck over onto the outdoor practice field afterwards right as Gallon, Norfleet and J. Wilson were walking off and the stopped for a picture with us. The women's bball was practicing so we didnt get to go on the court, but still toured the arena. I highly reccomend the tour.

There is a minimum of $100 to make the reservation.  Basically, if you do both facilities, it is a 5 person minimum at $20/person.  If you do just Michigan Stadium, it is a 7 person minimum at $15/person.  I decided to do both facilities and gave away the other 4 spots as presents to family members, now everybody is happy!

When i did the tour, i had planned to just pay the full $100 for 2 of us. 4 other people ended up signing up as well, so we just split the $100 6 ways. If you do the tour in a home game week, there will likely be some visiting fans that want to tour also, so you will likely have others to split the cost with.

After a Michigan Band Concert at Crisler Arena when I was a teen, the gates to the Big House were open and my sister, dad, and I got to play catch with a football on the field and run down the tunnel. It was a great experience.

I did a tour of the Big House a while back when I was a student. Highlight had to be knocking a 40 yard field goal through the uprights without any prior prior football kicking experience. This was around the time Rich Rod was calling out to the student body for walk-on kickers and it made me consider going for it. I tried practicing for a bit then realized I had 0 consistency, which I guess would have qualified me for the job around that time.

You can do stadium tours through the Alumni Association too. I took my nephew the year before last and he had so much fun. It was 20-30/person I think. They're usually on Sundays.

Here's the info from the website if anyone is curious.

  • Meet Dr. Robert Soderstrom, author of “The Big House, Fielding H. Yost and the Building of Michigan Stadium;” and Bill Austin, the Athletic Department’s in-house stadium historian.
  • Gain insight into the history of Michigan Stadium and how it became the largest collegiate stadium in the country
  • Run (or walk) through the tunnel onto the field
  • Throw a touchdown pass or kick a field goal
  • Take your photo on the 50-yard line
  • Visit the Michigan locker room and try on an actual Michigan helmet and shoulder pads
  • Experience the Jack Roth Stadium Club and see the Heisman Trophy

It comes highly recommended from me - I took the family around the same time and my kids really enjoyed it, which is nice because the entire time driving to Ann Arbor (all of 20 minutes for me) I was thinking they might not, as to that point they hadn't shown too much fascination for my Michigan fanaticism despite having tons of gear in their closets and having watched many games with me, a few of them even at the point of activity, if you will.

I took kids (8 and 4) on the tour, and the 8 year old had a blast. Pics by Peppers' locker, got to run the field, walk out the tunnel, etc. 4 year old was fine, but she didn't care so much. Also got to see the suites (which I won't be popping for)

Did that tour three years ago on Valentine's Day. It was $15 and was just me and my lady friend - it was the first thing she did in the state of Michigan and it was awesome. Our guide showed us anything we wanted to see, took us on the field, in the locker room. I also concur that a wheelchair should not pose a problem.

Loved getting to see it when it was so quiet!

In June. Highly recommend it. Our tour guide was the coolest and I got to tackle my buddy at the 50.

I remember taking the self-guided tours back in the late 1980s. The gates were open half the time and you could just walk in, sometimes even Crisler was unlocked. We weren't exactly wealthy, so it was my dad's best form of free entertainment. We got locked in once, but that's just a nice memory now. One time we even walked in on a men's basketball practice! Good memories.

My self tour during intermission at the Michigan Band concert at Crisler was in the 90's when everything was relaxed. No one said anything about my family running around the field doing my best Desmond impersonastions. I even ran out of the tunnel and touch the imaginary MgoSupport sign.... One of the best memorys of my child hood..

Does anyone know if Michigans Band still puts on a concert at Crisler every year?

Buddy of mine found the big house unlocked and took a tour by himself.

Came home with a blue phone with a maize M on it.

Still in his garage. Yes, he is a thief but its quite the conversation piece.

Went to a basketball game at Crisler the night before a road game vs OSU. Came out afterwards to see a few people running around down on the field. 5 minutes later I was down there myself, wandering around the field, up the tunnel, etc. It was pretty neat at night, with just a couple lights on. That night I went home to watch the end of the infamous Palace Brawl.

My family and I did the same thing before a basketball game in the Tommy Amaker era. I remember walking up the tunnel and there were many signatures on the wall. One of the signatures that I could make out was Donovan McNabb. I thought it was pretty cool because he was popular at the time playing with the Eagles. My dad went on to explain to me that he ran over Michigan when they played at the Big House. It wasn't as exciting anymore.

What happened to the W.O.W tours on the Fridays before home games? Think they were shorter but were on Friday (OP linked ones are specifically not on home game Fridays).

We were going to do it last year and then decided to go to a volleyball game instead, but this year we were going to absolutely go on it, now I can't find anything.

I just put a request in for the Friday prior to Wisconsin game. I'm coming back for the game, taking my Mom who worked at M for 30 years. Neither of us have been to a game in years. Super excited, and the tour would just be the icing!

We snuck in the night of the big power outage that took out most of the eastern US. It was amazing. That was the year they tore out the old turf and put in the new recycled rubber synthetic surface. Running around on it felt like running on springs. I attempted a field goal but fell on my ass (we'd been drinking a bit, to say the least). They had just put the surface in the week prior, so I always like to think we were the first ones to play football on that field. I still have one of the bricks they were using to build the wall between the field and the seats.

on the tour 2 years ago but we were not allowed to get on the field nor press box and locker rooms. Also we had to stay in the concourse at Crisler because the BB team was practicing. This was on a Friday evening before the game. Maybe thats why we werent allowed on field??

but I was told the picture of Gallon scoring vs Notre Dame was a result of Funchess' block, which it, was, like totally not. (The bowling ball play courtesy of Chesson).  I hinted at that but my guide was inflexible.  Needless to say it didn't detract.

Seeing the Heismann that close, was chilling, in a good way.
