I don't watch that many recruit highlight videos, but he looks like a great pickup to my untrained eye. I think the thing that stood out most was how his film is from many different games. It's not like he just had one big game, he's making plays all season. At least that's my optimistic view of things.

Good evaluation. Watching his highlights and the kid has all the intangibles. Magnus nails it so I will comment on the fact that Harbaugh goes after speed. I don't think Hoke put a premium on that attribute. That's not to say he didn't get good players because he did but Wangler,Winovich and Wimbush aren't great space players.

I think you're referring to Furbush with that last name.

Anyway, yeah, Brady Hoke did not do a great job of bringing in speed at some key positions. He wanted to run POWER, and he wanted to defend POWER. So we got some big, sturdy players, and they're doing okay for us, especially on defense. There are a couple guys who are plenty speedy (Peppers, Lewis, Gedeon, etc.), but that didn't seem to be his focus.

I think Hoke seems to be stuck in 1990s when power offense seems to be the rage. More and more team runs spread offense and you need speed to help defend the spread offense. I think that it's evident with LB group when they would be good about 8-10 years ago but they're liability in space.

(1) Looks like he's very good at diagnosing the play as he often gets a step or two in the right direction before it's obvious where the ball is going

(2) Closing speed, man. Coffee is for closers.

Its amazing how Ohio State and Michigan State fans are laughing at this kid cause he's a two star. First Sparty would always say how stars don't matter in past years. Also, sometimes kids dont get noticed as much cause can't attend camps. This kid is a great tackler and good in pass coverage, plus he plays against some good competition. I believe he will be at least a mid to high three star now that people will notice him.

"the recruiting services think you are a two star Dytarious but we both know better". "you are going to come play football for Michigan and we are going to prove them wrong". His interception return was incredibly athletic for a backer.

And people here are laughing at Sparty because their "average" rank of player is not super high and they have a bunch of 3 stars next to their 4 stars.  So their high ranking right now is "not legit" according to many.   The same kind of 3 stars we are lauding now.

It goes both ways.   We have taken quite a few non premium ranked players in this class - the sort of thing we mocked certain other schools for doing for years.  We're still getting some "typical UM" recruits but mixing in some guys who if Hoke had brought in everyone would be wetting their pants.

Personally I like that the coaches had 3-4 hours to work closely with this kid - this is how MSU finds guys like Trae Waynes who was a 2/3 star - he lit up their camp and despite being lightly recruited he ended up a 1st round pick.  You also get to see work ethic and attitude up close as opposed to from a HS coach's mouth - which is always going to be biased.  Stribling I think was found in a similar fashion although he traveled up to UM camp I believe.

All that matters is the end result in October or November - this tit for tat on recruiting is just fun for message board fodder.  Unless it results in a W it's moot - for either side.

p.s. Hi Pinky.

Are people really laughing at MSU around here? Not that I have read every last comment but usually I am just seeing people refute this notion that people think Dantonio is hauling in a monster recruiting class. This really is just an average class for him. Clearly he's been able to find great players among the lower rated ones but this class isn't really any better than ones he has had in the past.

Yeah I'm sure plenty also laughed at recruitment of guys like denicos Allen, darron lee, etc - underrated prospects with smaller frames but those dudes could move, were versatile athletes and made plays for their teams. Quick athletic LBs obviously must be the goal (with length and range infinitely more important than traditional size at that spot). 2 down thumpers still have roles but LBs evolved just like every other position - (as I'm sure all here have known). So refreshing to see modern recruiting profiles and mindset of this new staff. All 3 staffs know what they're doing which should please all 3 fanbases - but I guess some sparty fans just inherently insecure

He grades him a 77 but Chris Evans got a 79. Is it just because this LB is under rated in his opinion?

Also Magnus, what grade did you give Rashan Gary??

Evans as a slot and Enis as a safety is how I hope they end up down the road.  I like Enis' size and we need thunder with some speed in the back 4 down the road.  He would be about the age he could take over for Hill or Peppers down the road .  Plus we lack safeties in this class so he is a good fit there if that's where he eventually ends up.

Harbaugh and his staff will miss on some but it won't be because the kids won't be coached to their fullest potentials. These kids will be ready to run through walls and will fully buy in to the program or they will be gone.

I fully trust in this staff and I haven't been able to say that in a long time.

... And this is why satellite camps are great for the kids. This kid is in the SECs backyard. Nobody offered. Now he will be getting an education and opportunity at Michigan. This is really great.

Agreed...and I would guess that UM wasn't even a school he'd consider visiting on his own dime...so this probably has little to no chance of happening w/o these camps.

(scratch that...just read the "Touch the Banner" article and he actually has visited UM on his own dime. Well..even better this wasn't his first contact with the coaches and program)
