Just a guess:
1. Denard Robinson (His 4.32 40 is ZERO FAKEs out of 5!)
2. Steve Breaston
3. Tyrone Wheatley
4. Jon Vaughn
5. Desmond Howard
6. Anthony Carter
7. Daryl Stonum
8. Charles Woodson
9. Derrick Alexander
10. Mario Manningham
He said fastest WOLVERINES. Call me bitter, but I no longer consider Trent one.
I don't have many points, but I'm going to sacrifice one here. Morgan Trent did more than any of us can say for the team.
Yeah...he gave his sweat, blood, time, and talent to Michigan for five years...
...but he said something bad about Rodriguez.
HE'S NOT A WOLVERINE!!!
Fans are so fickle.
Any list without the Space Emperor is incomplete.
also a track man, if I remember correctly.
...Denard finished ninth, missing the finals by a few thousands of a second.
Still, quite impressive.
Butch Woolfolk was pretty fast - top sprinter if I recall - guessing he would be in the top 10
out on just putting Denard in all ten spots
Tony Boles would have to be on that list
If I remember correctly, Allen Jefferson was faster than Boles. I remember we were about to play Notre Dame and Bo made it a point to mention that "Tim Brown is the fastest guy we'll face this season."
From the back of the room, Jefferson chimes in with "Uh.......SECOND fastest."
Michael Shaw reminds me of him.
sam mcguffie had some speed.
Don't forget Marvin. At least that's what Fred Jackson used to tell me when I brought him his morning Danish back in the 90s.
Also Tony Boles.
Was it Odoms that beat Denard in a sprint in practice? The list seems a little biased toward the last decade too.
Breaston has a rep for speed but he only looked fast after drinking 8 beers
Before he had some minor surgery and went on the Gittelson Speed Reduction Plan, Stevie B was straight up blazing fast. Go back and watch some kick returns from his RS Fr and So years.
He's pretty darn fast in the NFL right now, too.
Michael Shaw should be on this list. He doesn't get a lot of love speed wise, but that guy is FAST.
Thomas Wilcher holds U of M 60 meter indoor and 110 meter outdoor records.
Butch holds outdoor 200 meter dash record.
win the fastest man competition during Spring Practice? If so, then he deserves to be on this list.
We need to see it during a game first. I keep waiting for him to catch a screen and go the distance. Hasn't happened yet.
Those screen passes aren't really designed to "go the distance."
He did have a punt return for a TD against Purdue that went "the distance" though.
A bubble screen, if timed correctly and blocked properly, can go the distance. Defenses have been jumping it, but Roundtree still had considerable success with it late last year, more than Odoms was having before that.
And this is the height of nitpicking, but even on that punt return, I felt like it was more Odoms's shiftiness than acceleration that got him free. You don't really have to be a burner to be a good PR - you just have to be shifty enough to get past the gunners, and after that it's mostly a matter of your up men blocking properly.
Leon Hall ran a 4.38 at the combine.
Acceleration, I think it's either Denard or Desmond or Breaston. Those guys could (can) go from stopped to full speed so fast. Hart was a hell of an accelerator too.
Top velocity is maybe Carlos Brown, or Troy Woolfolk (supposedly his dad was even faster). Kelly Baraka, too, could reach ludicrous speed. Leon Hall is another candidate. And Justin Fargas.
Combining both, meaning the guys who could accelerate faster and then go faster, I'd go with Desmond Howard or Anthony Carter.
Kelly Baraka.......the facepalm of facepalms..... what a waste of talent
manningham wasn't that fast. awesome yes, but not super fast.
Agree. His double-move was killer, and he had a knack for adjusting to the ball extremely smoothly. Though, he did blow past Justin King that one time!
In addition to that move, Mario had great timing and awareness (something both Braylon and Woodson had):
Manningham could catch flaming blowdarts while blindfolded, but I never really thought of his as a true burner.
Dating myself somewhat, but I recall several articles in which Bo said that Allen Jefferson was the fastest player on the team. I believe he overlapped with Tony Boles,
He could never stay healthly and it turned out that his career was cut short by some sort of tumor or bone growth in his leg that required surgery.
Just going to post AJ. While in HS he beat Jesse Owens' record in the 100M at the Mansfield relays. Yes, that Jesse Owens. He was big and very fast. Was in front of Tony Boles on the depth chart behind Jamie Morris when he broke his leg the first time.
Boles was super fast before his injury too.
It seems like the list is mostly sticking with recent starters or semi-recent top performers, but I'll throw out a suggestion/question... What bout AC?
Was he also plain fast, or simply one of the best receivers ever?
How about Antonio Bass? I know he only played 10 games or so.
End of the year and 5-7 of this years players will be on that list.
Is the one who beat Denard in that race at practice. And what about Carlos Brown? This list is kind of suspect..
That was definitely Odoms (place where link should be)
how does Darryl Stonum make this list???
Sure, he's fast, but... really?
Yeah, I'm not 100% sold on his speed. He had a tough time outrunning the MSU secondary on his TD last season. And on kickoff returns, I see him more as a guy who gets yardage through good, decisive cuts - but not necessarily by flying by people.
run down percy harvin from all the way across the field
Tony Boles and Allen Jefferson are arguably both top 5
I was an undergrad when Butch played. I recall that whenever he had any bit of daylight, he was gone - nobody was going to catch him. Sound familiar?
More seriously, Tyrone has to be up there. And I'd say Desmond wasn't really THAT fast. A knock on him in the NFL was he wasn't fast enough being a small receiver. That's why he was more of a return man; shifty in space, but not blazing speed.
...out the door.
Did you ever get the chance to watch Charles Woodson play i guess not because he should be tied for first. Also Desmond Howard should be higher.
I watched woodson play and he was amazing. I would not put him tied though for first ...higher than 8 yes. I have never seen someone with as much acceleration, speed, and more importantly game speed as denard.
John Kolesar anyone?
No love for Braylon? Watch the 2003 OSU game again.
Were you listening to Huge today?
