Top rival in basketball?

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

this broke out in another thread, and it isn't an official discussion unless it's a sanctioned DISCUSS thread. Plus, this will get more thoughts.

Who is Michigan's top rival in basketball? Some in the thread mentioned say OSU, many others say MSU, and others say Indiana.

i say it's obviously indiana. Long, bad blood history between the two teams. Our struggles at Assembly Call and the fact that the teams both played for a national championship once put it over the top.

MSU. It's not just that they have had the most success out of any of our BB rivals during the past twenty years; it's a passion that runs deep due to our close familial relationships with each other. In a lot of cases, opposing players grew up playing against (or for) each other--say for instance, players from Detroit--which contributed more fuel for the fire and made the losses more personal.

However, the prospective importance of the basketball rivalry could def be questioned, given the unfortunate aspect of changing HS basketball conditions in Detroit/Michigan and the reduction in the talent recruited from the state.

Thread hijack:  Not that the color matters, but does anyone know if there is a maize version of the ChadTough shirt? All I see is orange.  I'll support the cause either way, just curious.  Thanks.

Ronald Coleman is my friend on Facebook and said at Halloween that if he had to do it all over again and didn't choose Michigan that he would be a Spartan. Rubbed me the wrong way

Nobody's gonna say North Carolina? I know we don't play them really, but I hate them more than anyone else. After that, MSU and IU, but I grew up in Indiana.

There was a time when Michigan and Indiana dominated the B10. For a while in the 80's Indiana was our biggest rival. But times have changed. MSU is the top dog in the state and in the conference. They filled that void while Michigan sleepwalked through 10 years of the Ellerbe and Amaker eras. MSU has easily become our biggest rival on the court and off the court as well as we compete to attract the state's elite talent.

Anyone who thinks Indiana is our top rival in basketball is seriously drunk. I don't even consider Indiana a rival in the first place.
