I would replace Shaw with Torrian Wilson.
You have to realize that a lot of the players that we have chances with are package deals with other players. For instance, if you put Tony Grimes in there, you have to put Clarence Murphy in as well. That would take away another scholarship from one of the other guys up there. Mike Thornton would likely be a package deal with Tyrone Cornelius. It's frustrating, especially with the amount of scholarships we have left, but it's the way it is.
I agree, but with Murphy, he is a legitimate prospect at a position that it couldn't hurt to have another guy or two- defensive end. This may apply to Cornelius too, he a linebacker(?) but I haven't heard if he is an honest to goodness prospect
Cornileus is a pretty good player, too.
At most any other time, I'd be happy with Clarence Murphy committing. But with the numbers crunch, I'm not so sure...
But if something magical happened and Paskorz went elsewhere, I'd jump on Murphy in a heartbeat.
that asking for people to list "realistic" targets and then listing your first two candidates as "longshot" and "another longshot" makes sense. Realistic and longshot would be on opposite ends of the hopeful spectrum.
Christian is the only one from the above list (wing's list) that I think we actually land. After that, Josh Furman comes to mind as does Aramide Olaniyan. I think we have legit chances with both of those young men. After that, who knows.
Shaw and Fulton definitely aren't likely pickups but I left off the true longshots that I would have higher on the list (Henderson, Barr, Floyd).
I agree. More realistically, one of Furman/Olaniyan, two of Grimes/Knight/Christian/Mathis, Grimes' teammate DE Murphy, and maybe Kenny Stills. At this point in the season if they haven't planned an official visit for a game, and we haven't heard much about them, our chances are probably <1%.
"what would be the best case scenario in terms of game outcome from a recruiting standpoint?"
How long has it been since we won?
But I can see why someone would want to see Pryor have a career day against our secondary. Then we can look forward to offseason recruiting victories. Holy crap.
I agree that a win would be better but would a (highly unlikely) stomping of the Buckeyes be a better outcome than a nail-biter in which we eke out a three point victory in spite of getting gashed through the air? I'm sure it varies from recurit to recruit but I'll bet some blue star kids put more of a premium on starting sooner vs. riding the pine on a better team.
If you think some "blue star" (new rating system? Did you work for George W Bush? What's an Orange Star mean nowadays?) kids value playing time, UM would have a class of 40 Blue Stars by now.
Wow--you've given me an idea: Color star rankings for recruits! That seems to combine the possibility of attack with recruiting, so a smart guy can kill two birds with one stone! "Hey, Smitty Baggodonuts is a Purple Star out of Florida! Check your guide: Purple Star means pretty good player AND get out the duct tape and plastic, cuz the bombs are on their way toward us! DUCK! AND COVER!"
Clearly I'm trying to create a new rating system based on star color rather than star quantity. That's a much more reasonable explanation than a slip of the keys between "blue chip" and "5 star". Nice point total by the way.
Negged for the weak shot at point totals. Come on.
In my opinion it's warranted because it was a shot at someone who has apparently made it their goal to post as much contradictory/obnoxious/negative stuff as possible. My intent in starting the thread was to see who were the top guys that people think we have a decent chance at signing and then of course someone has to chime in with a snarky comment. Props to you for having his back though.
A competent competitive game would go a long way. A Ill/PSU type debacle would suck while a gutsy Iowa-type performance would be better for recruiting.
To hell with all that. I want a WIN!
one I think we have a chance for on that list is Cullen. That is my opinion, from reading rivals everyday because I have no life, Other than michigan football from August to January lol
I think the best case outcome for our the game is a Michigan blowout. Mind you, this is highly, highly unlikely, but recruits have a better time when the crowd is really into the game and the team does well. I think they've already seen how badly depleted out defense is in terms of talent and seeing them do well wouldn't deter them from coming here (especially the top guys).
In terms of our needs and percieved chances:
5) Best DL available
I think we have a very realistic shot at Grimes. Mostly because he has had good things to say about us all year, and now that we are one of the few schools that offered both him and his best friend (Murphy the DE) our chances will only go up.
From what I've read, they seem to be a package. I would definitely take both of them. We need talented defensive recruits and it couldn't hurt our future recruiting in FL either
If a bunch more people give their 2 cents we can come up with an mgoblog group consensus. I'm picking up some sort of pattern - perhaps a focus on the defensive side of the ball?
No, we don't need help there. MOAR SLOTZ PLZ.
Realistically I have the same top 4 as Wolverine IN Exile with Furman added. A wish would be Gabe King. He is virtually an Oregon lock since he all of the sudden picked up and moved across country and is now living a pitching wedge from campus. But he seems like a beast and would be a great DE. It says he is still considering Michigan but something just seems fi$hy about his recruitment.
I wish they won't have academic issues, can enroll earlier and compete for the starting position next year. I am tired of seeing Mike Williams running around the field without a clue.
Shaw is your #1 realistic recruiting target?
You know this is a UM message board and not UF right? :)
Can anyone tell me why this kid spends so much time on this site?
Plus 1 to balance the douche who negged you and didn't see the :) (Note to neggerman-- see the small print in Irish's posting)
Can we try to refrain from dropping the N-bomb around here?
b/c mgoblog is awesome and Brian has created a monster. that's why he visits this site.
spends so much time because this blog is badass. Oh and he knows his shit.
Shaws family is being rumored to be moving to Florida, thats why alot of people think he might be going there.
I think we will get what has been expected plus there will be a pleasant surprise or two to brighten the offseason.
1. Rashad Knight
2. Tony Grimes
3. Cullen Christian
4. Josh Furman
5. Dietrich Riley
I thought he was pretty much a USC lock?
1) Mathis (if we can't get Joshua Shaw)
2) Cullen Christian
3) Tony Jefferson or Sean Parker (whoever'd commit first)
4) Aramide Olaniyan (he's smart I really like that)
5) Rashad Knight
If we get these guys to go along with the guys we already have, I will be very very happy!
Interestingly, A. Olaniyan's GPA is only 2.8 according to his Scout.com profile. That, of course, does not automatically mean that he is NOT smart, but it doesn't exactly say, "Wow! Genius at work." Thus, it is odd that he has offers from most of the high academic schools (Vandy, Stanford, Duke).
Perhaps, the 2.8 is a typo...
Anywho, the guys we are most likely to get (btw, Sam Webb thinks UM will possibly sign as many as 27 for 2010) are IMO:
1) Cullen Christian
2) Tony Grimes
3) Clarence Murphy
4) Josh Furman
5) Jatashun "Big Tex" Beachum
6) Adrian Witty (remember him?)
7) ???????? (probably a de-commit from some other team late)
but the high school he goes to is a fairly prestigious boarding school in Virginia
Good call on Witty, if his grades for fall hold out (last I read on Rivals he was pulling Bs which is what he needed to make the sliding scale) he will be enrolling at Michigan in January.
Wasn't Witty going to try and get here early for spring ball. If he does, can his scholarship count towards last year? Seems I read this on one of the other threads a while back but I could be wrong. Any clarifacation would be great. I havnt heard an update on him lately. Are his grades up?
Look directly above.
What about his scholrship? Does that go towards this years or can it be counted on last years final tally?
Yes, Witty plans to enroll in January and his scholarship could (and probably will) count against the 2009 class.
Why is everyone forgetting about clarence murphy and tony grimes? They seem to be the closest to committing out of any of those players.
I think grimes is sick. I watched his tape he is good, and sometimes people need to not look at his stars and be like "aww man he is only a 3*" look at his OFFERS
If all of those teams want him to play Defense I am really high on him!
because they are forgettable. With only 5 scholarships left, lets hope we get better.Neither is bad but i think everyone is hoping for more(parker, christian, furman, jefferson olaniyan).
1. CB Grimes
2. CB Christian
3. LB Furman
4. S or DT
5. DE C. Murphy (Grimes' teammate)
6. (if we have any fallout) WR or LB
By the way, I thought Tony Jefferson's family was rumored to be considering a move to Florida, not Josh Shaw's. Am I wrong? Perhaps both families are moving...?
I definitely have read the same thing about Jefferson, and I was also surprised about Josh Shaw's family possibly moving to FL.
Edit: For some reason this post was negged, as was the one below, and same for one above. I plussed them to counteract the stupidity.
Jefferson was supposed to already have family in Florida, but UF has essentially passed on him so as not to upset current commit Elam. So Jefferson is not visiting UF anymore and also cancelled or changed his mind on a Miami OV.
Based on this,
His final list is UCLA, Florida, Michigan, and Miami.
doesn't that just leave Michigan and UCLA?
I'm sure other teams are still in it, but your news, Irish, makes things look sunnier for Michigan.
Where did you hear that UF has passed on him basically? Not doubting you, just curious, because last I heard was the Florida was rumored to be on top of his list of new schools. If this pans out to be true it could be good for us once he gets to visit. Thanks for the info.
"I'm visiting Arizona this weekend, Michigan (Nov. 21) and UCLA (Dec. 4). Those will all be official visits and that will be it for me. I was looking at Miami too but I'm not going to be visiting there. I'm still committed to the Bruins and after my official visit there, I'll make a final decision on where I'm going but right now, I'm still all UCLA."
Thanks for the info. Nice to see that we don't have to compete with a state where he has family already at. Sounds like he is open to possibly changing his mind but I wish our visit was the last one. It is always nice to have the last impression on a kid before he decides. Thanks again.
Personally, I think Grimes is the best corner left on our realistic offer board. I think he's better than Christian and Mathis, as well as some of the long-shot guys.
I agree completely with Grimes being the best we have a shot with, he looks like a stud in his videos and I have heard nothing to make me think any different from any of the recruiting sites.
As far as Mathis goes, I don't know a lot about him but looking at his stats and size etc, he reminds me a lot of Cissoko. Not to be an ass, but I have had enough of seeing 5'7-5'9 corners try and cover the types of receivers we generally see. Give me Grimes, Christian and Knight please!
I agree on Mathis and NOT just because of how things worked out with B. Cissoko. Honestly, I never wanted Cissoko, either. Smurf CB's scare the crap out of me. CB's who are close to (better yet, over) 6 feet are the way to go: Turner, Grimes, Christian.
I don't think Olaniyan is a lock for Michigan.
And I certainly wouldn't consider Knight and Furman locks, either.
out of curiosity, what happened to Cassius McDowell? I know he was injured but didn't we offer him before it happened? What are the chances he picks us because of Witty and Robinson, or doesn't the coaching staff want him anymore?
Guys like Drew Dileo, Tony Drake, and Austin White have that spot pretty much filled.
of players regardless of their interest. Then I would love to see Jeff Luc sign the dotted line. Would love Michigan to get a potentially game changing MLB.
But realistically .... my list would not be much different than all of the above. Shut-down corner(s), legit Safety prospect(s), and DL help.
I know its another long shot to say the least, but I was curious where we stood with Christian Jones at LB. That is a spot in need of serious help as far as I'm concerned. I know he hasn't set up an official to Michigan, but on Rivals it says he has no visits scheduled for the OSU weekend. Is there even an outside chance here?
and would go about as far as possible in replacing the BG hole that will be. A DL with Dorsey at one end, with a 15-20 lb gain for Roh (please), stout Martin, possible coming of age of Big Will and ever improving RVB would set the stage for what I think will be a greatly improved secondary.
Dorsey would be close to my #1 happy pill, assuming Marvin Robinson, Witty (who I think will surprise many) and Cullen make it. Dorsey is a big time NFL type guy who will contribute from day one (he would start IMO with no issues.) From what I read he's got a good attitude and tons of talent and brawn. Unfortunately he looks to want to stay in the south.
Offense is looking good BTW.
I get the feeling that the coaches are slow playing McDowell a little bit. I think they'd take him if they have slots left at the end, but he's not a priority anymore. He kind of missed the boat because he took/is taking too long to decide.
I'm kind of hoping one of our receivers decommits and we can take McDowell... I think he's a Martavious Odoms clone.
I'm not so sure about that. In a recent article on rivals ($) McDowell said Michigan's coaches were still recruiting him the hardest.
Here's saying there will be a fair amount of poaching in January. We have immediate playing opportunities all over the defense.
It seems like Christian, Grimes, and Murphy are the most likely to commit based on everything we are reading. But others I'd like to have are Jefferson, Riley or Parker, Knight, and Beau Allen or Thornton. I have a weird feeling too that if Stills is interested in committing then maybe Williamson is the odd man out. Like every year we can all hope for some surprises, we've gotten some nice ones the past couple years.
For what it’s worth (admittedly not a whole hell of a lot) here is my ranking of the Top 25 guys who still have UM on their board based on our current needs. Clearly many are very unlikely but they are all still uncommitted as of now:
1. Seantrel Henderson, OL
2. Joshua Shaw, CB
3. Johnavon Fulton, CB
4. Wayne Dorsey, DE
5. Anthony Barr, RB
6. Cullen Christian, LB
7. Tony Jefferson, S
8. Shariff Floyd, DT
9. Marquis Flowers, S
10. Aramide Olaniyan, LB
11. Dietrich Riley, S
12. Josh Furman, LB
13. Gabe King, DE
14. Mike Thornton, DT
15. Dominique Easley, DE
16. Chris Dunkley, WR
17. Dior Mathis, CB
18. Kenny Stills, WR
19. Brandon Gainer, RB
20. Rashad Knight, CB
21. Jatashun Beachum, DT
22. Skyler Schofner, OL
23. Beau Allen, DT
24. Sean Parker, S
25. Tony Grimes, CB
Anyone think guys are way out of order or want to weigh in on most likely commits? Any big omissions?
I don't believe he projects as a LB
Floyd has basically said no.
Michigan has basically said no to Schofner.
Grimes should be higher.
Easley has already committed to PSU (unless he decommitted and I don't know about it yet).
Good catch on Easley - it's so hard to keep track of all the players who are opting for Happy Valley instead of the sweet, sweet Deuce. Do you agree that Grimes should be lower than the other CBs Shaw, Fulton, Christian (typo on the LB vs. CB), Mathis, and Knight?
I would rank the corners like this:
Knight is being recruited as a safety.
Give me 2 out of the 5 on this list and I would be ecstatic.
I fully anticipate that 2 or 3 guys currently on the roster will leave of their own volition in addition to the RS Juniors you alluded to not being asked back.
Completely 100% speculation about guys who might leave would include: Terrence Robinson (4th or 5th on depth chart at slot), J.B. Fitzgerald (3rd on depth chart at ILB) and Brandon Smith (not sure what position he is even languishing on the bench as at this point).
You probably shouldn't have penciled in Brandon Smith, considering the fact that he's playing WILL and Jonas Mouton is returning.
2. Big Tex
