Tony Jefferson...we were so close

Submitted by ATLalumni on

Mark Schlabach lists his top newcomers in college football...familiar name at #2.

2. Tony Jefferson, Oklahoma Sooners freshman DB
A Southern California native, Jefferson became the first true freshman to start a season opener at OU since 2001. Sooners coaches have compared him to OU great Roy Williams. Jefferson is third on the team in tackles with 37 and has five tackles for loss and five passes broken up.

We almost had him, pretty positive he would be starting for us right now.  I can still dream...and that dream has Demar and Tony starting in the secondary for us.  Hello Avery Walls?

Ah, Tony Jefferson.  I was all in for that dude.  If I recall correctly he was part of the Brennan Clay-OU-SoCal group.  Shame we weren't in it for Clay for longer, might have had an impact.

That's who I was trying to think of when I saw Jefferson's name. I was like "Who was that RB teammate of jeffersons who also played with Tate and wanted to play with him in college? Then he decided he wanted to play out west so chose OU." lol

I had read that as "Allen Jefferson" - a back up tailback on the 88-89 teams who, I believed, had his progress slowed by a giant tumor in his leg.

I was wrong - but thanks for the walk down memory lane.

You can't cry over spilt milk, wait, yes you can. Especially if you have a mouth full of peanut butter DB's and that milk would help wash them down.

Retrospect posts are dumb. The kids have already made their decision, there are tons of recruits that could've positively or negative affected us, dwelling on it is pointless. Who is to say that if Jefferson had committed here AMSHG wouldn't have struck him down before he even played a down? Playing a game of what ifs just starts a slippery slope...

We should be encouraged we were so close. The guy was  an impact player, from a talent thick warm weather area with many good programs interested.  We were coming off two losing seasons and all that negativity in the media. OU was coming off 4 trips to the BCS title game in 10 years.

Rodriguez and his staff should be commended for being in the final running.

In a year or two, we'll be way better than close on similar guys.
