i refuse to even consider this a possibility
You are not.
Dungy a good guy... Would be a good ambassador for the Big10 and I want OSU's program to burn...
Tony Dungry is one of my favorite coaches but he will be 78 by the time Paterngo leaves.
True, but PSU can still sell it as a youth movement in their coaching staff.
Highly doubt it. Dungy is done coaching. If he weren't, he probably would have at least SOME interest in the job at his alma mater.
Also, I hate Ohio State as much as the next guy, but getting free tattoos in exchange for an autograph probably doesn't warrant a 5-game suspension. Although, if it does, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to learn that OSU is pushing it back until next season so they can at least make their bowl game look good.
Edit: I stand corrected. They have been suspended for 5 games, but of course, yes, they get to play int he bowl game.
he's a moron.
step down? Or was he forced out?
he wants to stick around to win the (Tom) Osbourne-Paterno Big Ten Championship trophy in 2011.
I know Penn State is a more prestigious job than Minnesota, but Dungy turned down Minnesota cold. Minnesota being where he played in college and is (probably) loved more there than anyone outside of Indiana.
There is no logical reason for him to be connected to the Penn State job and I really doubt that he's interested in getting into the grind that is CFB coaching.
Not to throw cold water on this random rumormongering (which afterall is what the internets are for) but this is way out there.
He got out of coaching to do other things in life, he had his fill and didn't seem interrested any longer in doing that.
PSU fans, now that Golden is out and Schiano won 4 games. I don't think there are any legs to the rumor, but it's going around PSU nation.
I can't imagine PSU having a head coach that isn't intricately tied to that program.
He just calls em' Dungrys
This would be one of them. I can't wait until after our bowl game when we can talk about
a) Denard shredding Mississippi State's great defense (that Cam Newton struggled with)
b) How once again Michigan speed beats SEC schools (lets forget the 2002 Citrus vs. Tennessee)
c) The evaluation and decisions DB makes toward the coaching staff
d) Michigan basketball
It's a slow blogging period apparently.
What does Dave Bandon have to say about this?
He will wait until after JoePa leaves the program and announce his opinion from his retirement home in Fiji.
maybe 15 years
Why is Dave Brandon waiting so long to make an announcement about Tony Dungey at Penn State? Aaargh! The guy is killing us!
It's amusing how much comedee can come about via a spelling errer.
Dungy is a sanctimonious homophobe.
agreed on both accounts. he's a deeply religious man, whose said before that he's against same-sex marriage and has done much fundraising for anti-gay groups. he gets a pass on these stances because of his mentoring of certain pro athletes, which is commendable.
as an NFL coach, whatever. but i for one am strongly against him as a role model on any college campus. not when gay teenagers, especially athletes are among the most affected by the fear of coming out. not when gay teenagers are committing suicide.
dick but what does his beliefs have to do with anything? If he can coach do you honestly think that he would tell a player that if they were gay that they could not play or that God would hate them.?The reason I ask is because you say they will commit suicide and if I recall his son commited suicide and he was straight and not gay. I mean if you dont like him that is one thing, but to say he could not be a good role model because he stands by his individuality, which makes him who he is and one of the NFL's former great coaches is wrong.
It was gonna be Stoops, Gruden, or Meyer. Oh wait, that's for when there is an opening at ND.
Golden was their guy, but he got an offer too good to refuse. It's reached the point where Joe is hurting the program more than he is helping it. I wonder if Jay will be the silent director/AD just like Bear's son after he left?
I think you may be right, I can see JoPa crowning his son the next leader of the Paterno Empire and then calling it quits.
'Lil' Bear, as he's known down there, controls a large bloc of boosters and cash as well as sitting on the University of Alabama board of trustees. From his position 'Lil' Bear controls just about everything that happens with UofA athletics including veto power over coaching changes.
Google him, but you better have boots on because it's typical SEC mud.
I don't think JayPA would be dirty like that, but I could still see him controling things from behind the scenes after Daddy moves on.
But it brings up an interesting past possibility. When Moeller was fired and Lloyd was interim, Dungy was one of the names that was being considered, as some of the staff might have agreed to transition with him, and no one was worried about him not running a clean program. This was back in the days when he was the most passed over Coordinator of all time, and not yet a head coach anywhere. Lloyd did well enough to keep the job, Dungy shortly after got his head coaching shot, and when Lloyd was retiring, Dungy had just won a Super Bowl and was winding down himself. But he was a candidate of consideration at the time.
often comes before the Gruden rumor but after Cowher. So... this is a bit unique.
