Tony Drake not part of this class per TomVH

Submitted by BiaBiakabutuka21 on
Per the Twitter feed of TomVH, Tony Drake will not be a part of this year's recruiting class. Tom talked to a current Michigan commitment who told him the bad news. I am very disappointed if this turns out to be true. http://twitter.com/TomVH

Seeing this in the Weds Recruitin' today definitely made me believe that this was inevitable so I guess it's good to get that final word. Hopefully Austin White is our RB of the future and he shows us some magic in the Spring game.

That sucks for Tony, and I wish him the best in the future, whether he can qualify for next year or not. I wouldn't have wished this upon him, but I can't say I'm disappointed, either. In the aggregate, I think the recruiting class will be better off if we can land another top flight defensive player or offensive lineman.

The jar of snakeoil RR keeps in his desk is overflowing right now. I'm sure after getting this news, RR has the wizard hat on and is checking himself in the mirror. What prized recruit he's going to get now that there is another scholarship open? Who is a soft-commit to another school who is attainable?

After following the entire story of Drake's recruitment I had already assumed months ago he wouldn't be part of this class. If we're still looking at 28-29 in this class then I guess my dream finish looks something like Parker, Grimes, Beachum, Wilson, Taylor, and Knight. For some reason I think Grimes and Murphy may end up at different schools. I have no basis behind that and my "gut feeling" is miles away from Sam Webb so don't read into it.

Everyone here seems to be excited at the prospect of getting a solid player to fill this spot. I was pretty excited for the solid player that had filled this spot up until a minute ago. There's no guarantee that we'll get someone as good to fill this spot, and I was pleased to have Tony as a recruit that wanted to come to M. Something about multiple birds and bushes and hands comes to mind. Tony, if you're reading this thread, don't worry about all those other guys. Get your grades together and come to AA.

I know that I don't really bring anything of substance to the table but if guys like: Brian Tim TomVH TOB Magnus Say something I generally listen. If it's someone else most of the time it's bs. So to your comment I guess it depends on who you think is the MGoBlog brain trust to me the posters above (and others I left out) are in the know and when they say something you should listen, but if it's from MGoPitchforkandTorch (pretty much everyone else) it's just most likely noise, epinion or hear-say.

Yeah, I think he's going to be a good player for someone. I'm a little bit disappointed with this news. Hopefully Michigan can take this scholarship and get in on another slot receiver or perhaps get back in the Brandon Gainer sweepstakes. I'm not enamored with any of the running backs in this class so far. We have a couple solid ones, but no game-breakers.

If it's an ACT issue that would mean he can't go anywhere, right? Anyone know the odds of him being able to come in next year's class if he gets his act together (a la Witty's potentially failed attempt)? Is that a possibility TomVH or other insider?

If this is a grade/qualifying issue, it seems strange that the final blow/straw would come now. Drake and anyone else in this class would have over six months to get qualified in time for fall camp. Did Rodriguez and Co. give him some kind of qualification ultimatum (and if so why hadn't he taken the ACT yet)? Is there essentially no way he can get qualified at this point? Is the staff just refusing to take any chances that a scholarship slot goes unused? Is Drake not able to enroll anywhere or is he just not coming to Michigan? What the hell is going on?

...he was never even close. I held on to this info for a long time because I felt horrible talking about a kid's grades and ability to get into Michigan. Friends of his and staff at Skyline also knew this commitment would be difficult. I won't get into specifics but he probably should have never committed. I always assumed we had one less recruit this entire class and was hoping another back with great speed would be added to the class.

Tony Drake didn't seem to have the measurables, but he had the numbers. You can't argue with production. Then again, Kevin Grady also had ridiculous numbers.

23 commitments. 29 spots. 6 scholarships left. 1-grimes 2-murphy...or black, if we can get him. 3-parker...or knight, if something goes terribly wrong. 4-dt or some sort. if not beachum, thornton or chandler, that no-name from florida. 5-ol. still in on wilson and 'mystery' recruit. 6-lb. best case, michael taylor. worst case, steve mehrer. several in between.
