TomVH Tweets About MI Contacting IL Commit OL Pat Flavin

Submitted by DoctorDave on

TomVH tweeted:

Illinois commit OL Pat Flavin received a call from Michigan OL Coach Darrell Funk today. Flavin has an offer from SDSU.

More details will no doubt be forthcoming. Here's an interview Tom did with Flavin last June.

Rich is gone and no matter how much you complain he will go down in the record books as a complete failure, someone who divided the fan base, was coach when Michigan committed serious violations which has never happened in school history, the worst coach in the history of the school, and blamed everyone besides himself when the team didn't perform well. Hoke is the present and the future so get used to it.

I really don't understand why so many pro-Hoke statements have to be bashes against RR ("blamed everyone besides himself when the team didn't perform well".....that's just a fabrication).

Support Hoke because it's what we've got now. And if people think rationally, it's looking more and more like he'll be successful here, no matter what Brian's paranoia suggests.

But for fuck's sake, let Rodriguez alone, the guy did nothing other than try to coach a team the best he knew how.  He wasn't a bad guy and he doesn't deserve this shit that people thrust on him just because those people want to shout down irrational anti-Hoke-ites.

I'm not going to comment on the current recruiting class (or lack thereof), as it's going to change 100 times in the next ~3 weeks.  However, I would like to comment on one thing you said:

We all better hope RR was not a "complete failure" b/c the kids he recruited will make up 95% of the meaningful minutes next year, and the vast majority the year after that. Or perhaps you want to start true freshmen over juniors & seniors?

Hoke/Borges/etc will need to do a good job coaching (scheme, playcalling, etc), but the talent they have (or don't have) at their disposal for 2011 and 2012, which is a huge part of football, will not be under their control. They are "stuck" with Denard, Gardner, Lewan, Roundtree, Roh, Avery, etc.

I'm rooting for Hoke b/c I'm rooting for Michigan. But Hoke's "present and future" is not his own, and it won't be for 4 years. Think of that when you decide to credit or blame.

Ignoring the obvious snark in your post, a quick look at Miami-OH's class shows 13 total commits, two of which are 3* and one not rated.  The rest are 2*.  There is no comparison.

I am saddened (well, not actually sad, but you know) to see you continue to melt down.

Hoke's priority is the following:

1. Keeping his current players ... don't need a bunch of transfers. It's more important than losing Dee Hart, Jake Fisher, etc. Oh, yeah, and round out his coaching staff.

2. Figure out which guys who are current committed will best fit the his system.

3. Recruit and poach accordingly.

I expect this to be a top 25 class by Feb. 3.

There is some Snake Oil in the tank for NSD.

I wouldn't be surprised if some recruits committed to us by NSD for early PT and that a CC has assured that there won't be another in the next few years (I hope!)

What about that Elliot kid we had on the back-burner for offensive line? And for that matter, Kitchen and that SMU CB? If we're hustling in new recruit prospects, when do we brush the dust off these guys? Or did their interest die with the RichRod administration?

Kitchen was all about UM. We could offer him on NSD and we'd probably get a commitment. James Elliot never had an offer, and was probably never going to get an offer unless we got desperate. With a new coaching staff, the chances of him ending up in AA got even lower. James Richardson, 'that SMU CB', probably firmed up his commitment with the CC, but I haven't heard anything definitive to that regard.

From his scout bio: "“I’m good at pass-pro."

This points out a possible flaw in the our OL is as big as a pro-style OL so everything will be fine meme. It will take some time for Hoke to recruit pass protectors.

Cue the "unwritten BigTen rule" and "snake oil salesman in a wizzard hat" comments that the press will eat up.  Of course, we can't rely on the media to properly report that literally every BigTen coach has done this at times including Joe Tiller.

Flavin didn't do well at the Michigan camp before... but we really need offensive tackles, especially if Fisher looks elsewhere. I think he would be a solid pickup.

And see, the coaches are recruiting! :)

Some of this late news today is causing me to lean towards Hoke's direction.  Extremely critical of Brandon and his Coaching Crisis Circus, I am going to reserve any judgment of Hoke and his recruiting abilities until after signing day.  If he truly has a "recruiting prowess" than he will surprise everybody with a couple of steals, Frost signing, and retaining most of the class.  And he will get a kicker.
