TomVH: Quick Update

Submitted by TomVH on

Just wanted to give a quick update, I had a long day today so I wanted to at least post something.

I spoke with Ohio RB/FB Alden Hill today and I'm not so sure that Michigan has a great shot with Alden. They're in his top five, but he has other schools ahead of him. He's likely going to make a decision before the end of summer so the coaches would probably need to try to get him back on campus to gain some ground. I don't know how likely that would be.

If he does decide to go elsewhere I would imagine the coaching staff would try to find another prospect. Either new offers or going after EJ Fatu (who is very high on Michigan) or Sione Houma, who still maintains that Michigan has a chance. This might end up being a position that they will have to wait to fill, or they might put out some new offers to gain a commitment.

The thing about FB is that it is one of the easiest positions to fill with[prefered] walkons and I'm not sure Michigan needs a scholarship FB.  Nothing against Hill or any other FB Michigan may offer, it's just the degree of difference between a scholarship FB and a walkon FB is much smaller than most positions.

Now, regardless, it seems like the coaches want a scholarship FB, so what do I know.

So far this recruiting season, we've argued over whether we have room for the following

a QB, a RB. a 2nd WR, a 2nd DT. a 6th OL and

an elite DE like A. Washington (tacked onto Brown, Godin, Ojemudia, Strobel and presumably Wormley)

We've also had to turn away multiple DB's and Sevon Pittman b/c of the #'s crunch, not to mention the lack of knowledge concerning how many spots we have available bringing up oversigning concerns.

I, personally, would rather see UM use a scholly on any of those positions than on a fullback. Weve seen Moundros and Obi Oluigibo flourish as walkons.  How hard is it to find an undersized guard who wants to play at Michigan?

about oligbo and moundros thriving, esp since moundros got moved to lb his last year. IMO, one of the worst things about the end of the Carr era was the loss of a dynamic fb/TE that kept defenses a bit more honest and had something more going on than a hand off to hart or Henne to whoever.

It might be more of a philosophical thing than a pure talent thing, but Michigan's former fullbacks include BJ Askew (who's still in the NFL) and Aaron Shea (who had decent NFL career).  Oluigbo and Moundros weren't very productive when compared to those guys.

FWIW, I did think Moundros had some skills, and I always thought it was odd he wasn't used more often on offense.

I agree with no scholly. but if we are talking about a fb in the mold of askew, shea, Jon Ritchie, someone who can run up the middle, block and catch a pass or two, then I think that is a special type of player that needs a scholarship to come to um vs another school.

I hope Fatu goes somewhere else, if for no other reason than I don't want to hear Brent Musburger tell the story of James Laurinait...I mean, E.J. Fatu's father's wrestling career.

I hope Fatu goes to Hawaii so I'll be in bed when that random bit of trivia is repeated 1,000 times.

NO way. That dude is related to the guy who just took the greatest "action shot" on Splash Mountain, ever.

Can you imagine what having Dwayne Johnson on Michigan's sidelines would do for recruiting? Unless he was recruiting for the U, I suppose.....

Kava is great, not gonna lie. Drank two cups right before my flight out of Hawaii a couple of years back and had a great trip home.

My friends all said it tasted like dirt water though...

Back on topic, I'm wondering if the majority of well informed followers of recruiting news agree with the idea that we'll be taking both a RB and a FB in this class posted above.

My professor at UM gave us kava on the last day of class. It did taste like dirt water, but it gives you a nice little buzz.

As for the RB/FB, I think what the coaches want and what will happen might be different.

and Afa and Sika the "Wild Samoans" came back for a visit and got in a fight at the Pago Bar and got beat up pretty bad.  I made it a point to stay out of the Pago Bar.

Why do we get into this debate how many at which .position will we take. And we don't need a QB bs... here we go...1 QB, 1 RB/FB, 2 oline, 3 dline, 1safety, 2 WR... or 2 elites. My source is ace, some guy on a recruiting board none of you have heard of, a crystal ball and that guy in Ohio that ruins silent commits and steals kids thunder.

As always thanks for an update, but more importantly sending positive thoughts your way for a speedy recovery for DogVH. I have my two right here and they say woof to Dog VH.

is a true battering ram right now. Probably the most game ready FB propect on the board. I still have some questions regarding how high his ceiling is.

Tom, did Blake Bars a 4 star OL tackle from TN commit tonight? Brother in A2 just emailed me about him committing late this evening?

Sorry to hear about VHDOG, hope he has a speedy recovery!
