TomVH: Quick Recruiting Update

Submitted by TomVH on

In the weekly update on Monday I had reported that 3 star Florida DT Trevarris Saulsberry (6'4", 252 lbs) and teammate 3 star DE Jordan Williams (6'4", 240 lbs) were offered by Michigan. Both are committed Tennessee, and both had told me they are 100% committed to the Vols.

Trevarris told me today that they will be getting a visit from one of the Michigan coaches this week. He's not sure who and he's not sure when, but he knows someone is coming to see him. He still maintains that he's 100% committed to Tennessee and also says if Michigan had been on him earlier they would have a chance.

Michigan will probably have a better pitch if they have a defensive coordinator in place, especially if it's one from the NFL. We'll see what happens, it might be something to keep an eye on.

You can see Trevarris' highlights here, and Jordan's film is here.

Do you like the news better now that you've seen the thread posted right after this one? I mean, no kid in his right mind is going to say "y'know, I'm sure it would be nice to play for a DC that was just the DC for the f'ing Baltimore-Reed-Lewis-Suggs-Burgess Ravens, but hey, I committed to Tennessee, and I'm an adolescent of my word!"

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to hope that rumor is true.

Thanks Tom - just another reason why you're one of the best posters on this blog (ass kiss).  Is it bad of me that I read this and think "desperate times"?  As in, Tom's trying to appease the fanbase with an update, and in this update we are looking at two kids that are very solid to another school?

Will we get more than 10 recruits?

I guess I won't read too much into the 100% percent committed thing but I can't help but wonder why we are spending time on these guys who probably won't flip their commitments as opposed to anyone else. Are we that desperate or does Hoke and his staff think that their chances with these guys aren't that bad?

committed.. why allow someone come see you?  It's a waste of time right?.. I would say they seem more 99.9% committed than 100%.

I mean if you were going there for an official.. why not.. free trip... but this is just a waste for everyone's time for someone 100%.

I think that it's worth a shot if they can turn a few young men into coming to the University of Michigan.  You can never underestimate the effects of a face-to-face meeting.  They could  be hearing from a seasoned defensive line coach with a National Championship ring and a Defensive Coordinator who has coached Ray Lewis, Suggs, and Ed Reed.  Hey, it could happen to work...

Thanks for the updates Tom.  I was wondering if you talked to Frost at all.  Is Hoke still going down there for an in home visit, or is he 100% committed to Auburn?  How about Fisher?  Did Hoke meet with him yet?

I presume that the reason we didn't recruit these guys earlier, was because we had better options that were solid at the time.  Right?

On a good note for today, I read that Daren Kitchen has been in contact with the new coaches, and may be closing in on an offer. Can anyone confirm?

I agree. I was always under the impression Daren Kitchen was a plan B or C. It looks like we have a few more DBs we are targeting (McClure, the other name slips my mind).  I would think we would target them first. I would imagine we can offer Daren Kitchen on signing day, and he would sigh his LOI (if nothing else worked out).

I agree there are DBs we'd rather have than Kitchen, but what does that have to do with Lucien?  They play different positions.  Do you think it's possible that Hoke just thinks we have a bigger need at DB right now than WR?  Kitchen is 6'1" - which could either mean Hoke wants to get taller CBs in at UM, we currently have few tall corners, or he thinks Kitchen can add weight with that frame and play safety, a position we currently have zero commits this year, and only a few of on the current roster.

I like the fact that Hoke (and really who hasn't) has identified our weakness-defense and DL- and is trying to address it.  It is a cliche, but it is true- the game is won and lost at the line of scrimmage.  If he offered them and is sending someone to meet with them, then there must be some reciprocated interest.  Perhaps there are some potential recruits for the 2012 year there also whom we might contact as well.
