TomVH: Quick Evan Baylis Update

Submitted by TomVH on

Colorado TE Evan Baylis (6'5", 225 lbs) told me that he's getting close to making his final decision. He'll be announcing his decision in early May, so only a few weeks away. I spoke with Evan after his visit to Michigan, which you can read here

Michigan is in the running, but for some reason I have a feeling they might be a little behind. He hasn't told me where he's picking and I still think Michigan has a good shot, I'm just not sure.

If they happen to miss out on him they've positioned themselves for success with Ron Thompson, Devin Funchess, and AJ Williams.

He will probably go to Auburn. I will be honest, if one of those trees ends up dieing, I am not going to feel bad.

If we don't end up getting him, the other 3 you mention are a pretty great group. In the event we take 4 LB's, we probably will have only room for 1 TE.

Not sure he has an Auburn offer - at least according to scout and rivals he doesn't.  I would be worried about Stanford taking this one - kid is big on academics and they are a bit closer home.  Good to know we have some other good options because I haven't heard much about him lately.

It's very hard for 210 to 220 lb. TE's to block effectively in today's Big Ten.  Maybe in Bo's days it was OK.  But, I'd like to see us recruiting bigger guys at this position.  Obviously there are always exceptions.  But, kids like Ricardo Miller and Ron Thompson will be hard pressed to bulk up enough to become effective blocking TE's and still have enough speed to get open.  Hopefully they can prove me wrong.

Although I agree with you that it's nice to have bigger TEs. Ron Thompson might not be that small once he's actually in college.  Some sites have him listed at 225, and if that's legit (and it probably is, at least close) it's not difficult for him to be 235 by the time his freshman season starts at UM (roughly 18 months from now, maybe more from when that 225 was measured).  A 235lb true freshman TE could easily be 250 by the time he's an upperclassman, and that's a good sized TE.

It's not a major feat to ask a 6'4" 17 year old to put on 25-30 pounds in 3 years.

EDIT:  As a comparison, Craig Roh who is 6'5" was listed at 230 in his final Rivals profile.  As a freshman he was listed at 238 and as a sophomore he played at 250.  I think it's very possible for Thompson to follow a similar trajectory.  Even if we concede that he's a little smaller than Roh was at the same point, he still has a good chance at being 240-245 as a sophomore; plenty big to be a "big" TE.

He's from Denver and that's where I live so I'd really like to see him go to Michigan unlike Leilon Willingham... still pissed he didn't go blue

if he goes to Auburn but it's Zeke Pike that im going to be pissed about i just cant stand that there is such clear evidence that they commit recruiting violations along with so many other shcools but the NCAA choses not to do anything and ESPN basically refuses to make it a big deal if they do because they make them money

With both Auburn and Michigan in the running, does Zeke Pike's decision have any influence on his?  I doubt it, but I had to ask.

He doesn't have an Auburn offer. Thread just went along that path and no one's clarified the situation. He just got back from a visit to Stanford and apparently enjoyed it. Believe he also visited Boise recently and Colorado should be a factor since he's a Denver kid.

but this seemed like a good thread to ask, have we heard anything on Pike since we found out he is announcing on Weds? He'd be a tough one to lose.
