TomVH: LB Antonio Poole

Submitted by TomVH on
Michigan coaches just left Ohio LB Antonio Poole's house. Mattison was the main man here. Antonio has now decided that he will make his announcement tomorrow at his school. You might want to tune in for it.

OK, no doubt I like getting commits from good players, but this better mean that Beyer is NOT a LB and hopefully means that Frank Clark will play TE.

I know you can never have too many good linebackers, but 5 in one class is a lot.

Not at all.  I like all of the linebackers we've got or are likely to get.  It just seems like we're really loading up on one position group, something you don't see schools do too often.

THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT.  But there has to be a reason that this staff wants to sign 5 LBs in one class.  Is it because one of them projects at another position?  Is it because they think one might not commit or might decommit?  Is it because they don't like our current LBs?  Do they expect to run more of a 3-4?  I would have answered no to all of these questions myself, so I'm not sure why.

Is the staff looking at lining up a bigger front 7 as well?  Maybe some of these cats who were safeties in high school will have their transition to LB halted... and will become large, hard hitting safeties.  Then again, Isaiah Bell looks to be 245 lbs and ready to wreck opposing RBs.  Regardless, I am excited to see some depth at LB again.  The glory days of Jarrett Irons, Dhani Jones and Larry Foote are upon us once again!  All hail Mattison.  All hail Blue!

That could be, and I would like that a lot (I'd throw Victor Hobson into that group, he was my favorite UM LB).  However, guys like Mike Jones, Cam Gordon and Furman are at LB more because of their skill set than their size, since none of those three are too big to play safety.  But safety is still a defensive back, and those guys play more like linebackers.

With all of these LBs now, I wouldn't mind seeing one of those three guys moved back to (or kept at?) strong safety.  Maybe Furman since he has the speed.

At no point did I say I don't think Poole or we shouldn't have offered him or anything like that.  It just sounded a lot like we'd get Clark and Willingham and most, myself included, thought we'd be done at LB after that.

Poole gives us 15 commits.  Clark and Willingham put us at 17, Bryant and Rawls put us at 19.  If 20 is our number, which seems to be the concensus, then we have one spot left and more than one guy considering us.  Jake Fisher, Bellomy the QB, Darian Cooper, McClure (who I know is a longshot), as well as a TE and DE recruit who are considering us will only have one spot between them all.
