TomVH: LB Antonio Poole
Scout is reporting that we signed another LB? is it poole?
shocking another defensive player. who would have guessed. Sign him up!
shocking another defenseive player.
Dear Lord, I can see the Freep headline now...
UM coaches torturing HS prospects on in-home visits!
If I tell you to tune in to an announcement, it's safe to say the visit went well.
Don't ever question TomVH. If tom says jump, you ask how high... all hail tom and the victors
Even Chuck Norris defers expertise to TomVH.
SIR YES SIR!
That's what she said
Soooo....? You're telling me there's a chance?
how much thunder did you just leave Antonio? some people
Great news Tom, thanks for the update. Can anyone imagine a class of Poole, Jones, and Willingham? Yikes, im excited for the defensive unit.
Don't forget Clark too.
if it were me this would mean the exact opposite. the flesh and blood of schadenfreude is what sustains me.
have a blessed evening everyone!
This morning Sam Webb said he was getting a gut feeling on this one....
thank you for all the great info.
one question, what time is the announcement tonight??
Tune in doesn't sound all that cryptic to me!!!
but I have to -1 you because if you do not have your secret decoder Tom VH ring yet, you should not ask questions. Tom is the man and he NEVER says anything out of turn nor betrays the trust given to him by his peeps. A professional for sure.
Bravin the malware storm as well, I see. Well this is very exciting news. Looks like Mattison's recruiting record was all it was cracked up to be..and then some. Scout's reporting some....very positive news regarding Poole
Gobluewolverine has a commited LB but not showing a name. Cold it be Poole ? If not Willingham tonight , Poole tomorrow ? All the suspense. Regardless go blue !
Scout's mystery LB commit is a four star....any other four star LB recruits (on scout) you think committed?
Boom goes the dynamite. Mattison is going to have this defense back in no time.
Modern-day Midas. Any defender he talks to turns to gold... er... maize...
Is that a boy or a girl?
A little bit of both from what I can tell. Let's go with WOMAN...
Due to slight androgyny above, coming in with cat to close the deal:
How about two?
They take no prisoners. Hope we get Poole. AL Golden , payback is a. Well we know the saying. Karma is awesome ! GO BLUE !
OK, no doubt I like getting commits from good players, but this better mean that Beyer is NOT a LB and hopefully means that Frank Clark will play TE.
I know you can never have too many good linebackers, but 5 in one class is a lot.
You have been quite the negative nancy today.
Not at all. I like all of the linebackers we've got or are likely to get. It just seems like we're really loading up on one position group, something you don't see schools do too often.
THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT. But there has to be a reason that this staff wants to sign 5 LBs in one class. Is it because one of them projects at another position? Is it because they think one might not commit or might decommit? Is it because they don't like our current LBs? Do they expect to run more of a 3-4? I would have answered no to all of these questions myself, so I'm not sure why.
Last year the only LB we signed was Jake Ryan. A lot of our other depth at this position are guys who have been converted to this position. So going a little heavy maybe a result of our current staff seeing a glaring need at this position. That would mean answering yes to your 3rd question.
That's fair, although I do believe Furman was brought in as a LB. And since Mike Jones, Cam Gordon and Isaiah Bell all redshirted, they'll all be sophomores at LB this fall.
Is the staff looking at lining up a bigger front 7 as well? Maybe some of these cats who were safeties in high school will have their transition to LB halted... and will become large, hard hitting safeties. Then again, Isaiah Bell looks to be 245 lbs and ready to wreck opposing RBs. Regardless, I am excited to see some depth at LB again. The glory days of Jarrett Irons, Dhani Jones and Larry Foote are upon us once again! All hail Mattison. All hail Blue!
That could be, and I would like that a lot (I'd throw Victor Hobson into that group, he was my favorite UM LB). However, guys like Mike Jones, Cam Gordon and Furman are at LB more because of their skill set than their size, since none of those three are too big to play safety. But safety is still a defensive back, and those guys play more like linebackers.
With all of these LBs now, I wouldn't mind seeing one of those three guys moved back to (or kept at?) strong safety. Maybe Furman since he has the speed.
If you look at what Mattison has run in the past, it's more of a 3-4. They're calling it a 4-3, but that one DE plays like an OLB. Terrell Suggs is listed as an OLB for Baltimore, even though he's basically a defensive end.
Agreed I like whaqt we're getting but I was hoping we might get Barnett a 6'6" 245 lb 4* TE and a DT like Cooper since we're really light in these areas.
At no point did I say I don't think Poole or we shouldn't have offered him or anything like that. It just sounded a lot like we'd get Clark and Willingham and most, myself included, thought we'd be done at LB after that.
Poole gives us 15 commits. Clark and Willingham put us at 17, Bryant and Rawls put us at 19. If 20 is our number, which seems to be the concensus, then we have one spot left and more than one guy considering us. Jake Fisher, Bellomy the QB, Darian Cooper, McClure (who I know is a longshot), as well as a TE and DE recruit who are considering us will only have one spot between them all.
What do you mean by "if every player will retain his scholarship next year?" Do you anticipate massive attrition? I know it's possible but I'm sure the coaches aren't banking on that happening.
I am hoping that they don't pull his schollie. That is not what I expect out of this staff. I would hope that Gibbons sees Wile coming in as a serious threat and he either picks up his kicking game or decides that things did not work out for him here and he takes his talent somewhere else.
There is a good chance Mike Williams gets a medical scholarship, freeing one up. With all of his concussions, he likely won't play again according to many reports. Also, there are some walk-ons who received scholarships that may not keep them with exception to Kovacs. Watson may not return for a 5th year, and I am sure there are others in the same boat. The actual number of spots we have could be a bit higher, maybe even close to a full class when all is said and done.
Trust me, after watching these last 3 years I don't mind stockpiling defensive players. The part that I'm a little curious about, with some big names in the mix and only a couple spots left - Does this say we don't really have a chance with McClure, Fisher, Raven, Bellomy, Cooper, Brandon Alexander, Chris Barnett, etc...
Just a bit worried about the offensive neglect. We saw that neglect to one side of the ball can have ill effects. I think our O is good for this year and probably the next as is. Just like to see spots filled in for the future I guess instead of future holes like our DT situation behind Mike Martin (Dear BWC - Get your shit together please).
I guess I'll just subscribe to defense wins championships...GO BLUE
With the number of linebackers and the size of these guys it looks like we may be running a 3-4 in the near future.
It's a lot sure, but these are some pretty good players we're bringing in here. Frank Clark is too small to play TE, period. If we put him there, we're squandering his potential at LB. I don't think Beyer was ever seriously considered a LB, that was just a rumor. Especially not in the 4-3
I heard some schools were looking at him at TE. When you say he's too small, do you mean too short? He's as tall as Dustin Keller, and I know that's shorter than most, it works for him.
He's as tall yes, but Keller makes up for his lack of size with superior athleticism and outstanding blocking ability. Clark may be good, but I doubt he has the size/athleticism combo Keller has. Keller's a one-in-a-million kind of TE. Additionally, he's about 45 pounds short of Keller. At LB, he can probably play weakside at somewhere between 225-230. At TE, he'd need to get up to around 240-250. That could seriously handicap his athleticism.
Totally agree..... unless we are going to the dreaded 2-5-4 defense.
I second that !
It's Poole. I think Willingham will wait a little longer. Good get. (Assuming he commits)
Well that's good. So what happens with Frank Clark and the decommit from TAMU, I forgot his name? Can we get all three or is it two of the three only?
Leilon Willingham. I'm guessing we get all three.
That's good to know. Like most people have already said, that's a lot of linebackers in one class. Looking ahead that probably affects our chances with James Ross and Royce Jenkins-Stone right?
These guys are all good, but none of them are on Ross' level. I don't think he is (or should be) afraid of competition. Like I've said all along, I think RJS signs with UM no matter what.
Well you know your stuff so I'll trust you. Thanks for the quick responses.
I'm guessing Mattison doesn't have difficulty with the ladies.
But he sure is doing well with the laddies.
We could be preparing to run the 3-4? with all the linebackers.
A lot of these guys seem to fit into more of a 4-3 scheme. If this was a 3-4, we'd probably be signing 4-5 ILBs
the 3 star mafia going to bitch about if we get a 4 star???
They'd probably point out that he's a 3 star on ESPN and Rivals, but then again, they could suck it.
I'm sure there's a 4-star mafia waiting to crawl out of the woodwork...God forbid we don't take 25 5-stars every year...
would be a major pickup. Along with potentially willingham and Jones? Very nice LB class.
A DT to finish off the class, please?
Honestly, I think they get Cooper.
I'll pass......I heard Bolivia is cold......
That void is quickly filling up. Now coaching staff go to work on Darian Cooper. Reel him in !
Does anybody have any video on him? A cool +1 is in it for anyone who can make that happen.
I just threw up a little bit in my mouth
one hell of a strong chair......
The camera usually adds 15 pounds. So she's probably only about 320.
Can she play defensive tackle?
or does this kid look to have really good play recognition and reaction. This staffs recruiting has the future looking bright.
can he play pass defense? Nice highlights though.
You want to talk about laying mother fuckers out.
Since you guys haven't picked up on this, I'm not cryptic unless I know something for fact. I always tell you if I don't know.
I appreciate everything you do for Michigan Fans! If it isnt concrete, I am glad you say it isnt.
forgive them Tom. Most of us know. You don't want to spoil anything for the players.
You know Tom; we've been through such rough times that now good news is hard to believe when we hear some. So can you make that a triple post, please? You know just to make us feel better. Thank you!
I felt like the post was pretty straightforward (as much as it can be without saying it directly), not sure how it confused people. Maybe we should start calling you the riddler.
This policy sounds a lot like my girlfriend's
but I am already loving Greg Mattison.
Poole was supposed to be deciding tonight whether to take his last official visit to Pitt or Michigan--aka who rounds out his top 5 choices. Mattison pays him a visit tonight and now he has committed to Michigan?? That is some dynamite stuff. Forget snake oil and the pimp hand...Mattison may soon need a meme to trump all memes. That picture of Ray Lewis is already getting a lot of mileage.
Goes the mattison dynomite ! Explosive.
Clearly this visit went well, Mattison put on his best suit and waxed the top of his head and walked right in there and told him about the worlds most dangerous nearly incarcerated future hall of fame linebacker he just left to take the UM DC job.
Well said, all Mattison has to do is show the text picture of R. Lewis blowing some running back up, and the recruit replies, were do I sign on my LOI !
I'm ready to add another great player to my There are... posts!!
Imagine if they had another week to work!
Tom who's next on the "Hit List"?
Is there a big O lineman on the fence anywhere?
Chris Bryant, as far as I know, is still likely blue.
Imagine if Brandon would've hired Hoke in December. We'd have a top 20 class for sure. Not to mention we might've put up a better fight against Miss. St.
+1 to you. Everything works out for a reason. God loves a Michigan Man too you know.
You might make DB look smart...
Not to mention we might've put up a better fight against Miss. St.
Keep your eye on Ryan Nowicki, the T currently committed to PSU.
Espnu has a note that Jake is nearing to a final decision. At the end it's going to be the Might AA or the little school out of EL. Come on Jake, go blue.
According to ESPN, Oregon & Florida are still in it as well...
Am I the only person who doesn't follow this stuff at all? I can't come close to keeping an eye on the whims of 18 year olds. I had to look up Antonio Poole on Google just to figure out who he was...
Yeah, now I've just got to stop being emotionally invested in the football games and just enjoy them...
He seemed like a lock for Michigan for a while over the summer..but the offer never came. So this isn't the first time he's been on M's radar.
No you are not alone. It has gone pretty far beyond reasonable, but if it gets folks pumped up go for it.
I did the exact same thing as you - had to google him..
where we hang on the whims of 18 year olds.
Last year we were jump-up-and-down excited when 5* Big Will Campbell comitted to us after announcing earlier he had dropped us.
All that and he still hasn't played a meaningful down for Michigan.
Oh well, we're just having some fun.
Any insight ?. At this rate we will eclipse the 20 recruit mark before NSD. Awesome.
I don't think we have more than 20 to give out?
Tom is being like parents on christmas. You know, you start to be like "I really hope santa got ____" and your parents are like "well, you'll just have to trust santa."
Luckily Tom isn't fake, and linebackers are so much cooler than pokemon cards.
Good to hear, and welcome Poole to the UM family. Hoke definitely doesn't seem to be afraid of hitting the recruiting trail hard, which is a positive. I still think this class will suffer because of Brandon's decision-making (and let's not bury RR here - some more public support from the AD probably would have netted more commits), but I like the passion shown by Hoke for trying to get as many good kids as possible for this class.
To a great next few days leading towards NSD. 2012 is going to be out of this world. !
anybody tell me why the old staff didn't not offer this guy?I'm glad that are DC can recuirt.GO BLUE!!!
Probably because they had a silent commit from Army All American Kris Frost. Also, you should proofread things.
Should be avoided if possible.
The only thing you noticed was the double negative usage???
Can someone fill me in on Poole? (In England Student Teaching)
Taken with a grain of salt for the level of competition, Poole looks like he has an aggressive break on the ball and can destroy on arrival.
Poole is maybe the highest rated Ohio prospect that has yet to commit to a school. He's a 4 star on scout #13 OLB, #26 OLB on Rivals, #41 OLB according to ESPN, he's 6'2 220ish outside linebacker from Cincinnati, OH. Would be a great pick up for this class.
From here on out it's going to be mad crazy. No stopping the Home/Mattison train, they are on fire !
slot receiver : Rodriguez :: linebacker : Hoke
its been a few years since i took the GRE, but i see what you did there!
what is the star rating for poole?
so i am sure that this has been discussed somewhere, but i saw someone said that we will be running more of a 3-4 than a 4-3? just curious if there is any news on that front?
just curious if there is any news on that front?
If this is a pun, well played.
Rivals & Scouts has him as a 3 star.
Scout has him as 4 stars you wacky multi-commenting without using the reply button properly dude.
on this kid?
too excited. Cant work the keyboard. We are rocking and I love it. F*CK tosu and sparty.
You are the man!! Great info every time, good or bad!! Mad props to you sir!!
Check out his Scouting Ohio film. He hits like a truck.
Coach Mattison is bringing a swagger and identity back to our D which we did not have for the past few years (even pre-RR years, perhaps dating back to 2006). This is not to disregard BG who was a one-man wrecking crew in 2009.
We should never pull a scholarship from a Wolverine as long as he's fulfilling his duties and responsibilities as a member of the team and making acceptable progress toward his degree.
You seem like one level-headed, sensible SOB. I +1 for posts that support integrity in dealing with these kids. We demand (and rightfully so) that they behave and present UM in a positive light, and the school should reciprocate.
... I missed all this news yesterday. A few other sites say he is going to take his offical visit to michigan this weekend, does that mean he is putting off his announcement until after the visit?
