TomVH: Kent Turene to USC

Submitted by TomVH on

Not that it matters, I guess, but Boyd Anderson LB Kent Turene committed to USC.

Everyone thought he would end up at Florida, so it's a little odd. To give you some insight on Michigan, and their non-recruitment of him, here's a little bit.

Kent attends Boyd Anderson High School, which should sound familiar. It's the same school as Demar Dorsey. I've been told that Kent is still on the fence with his qualification, and while he will most likely qualify, there's still a chance he won't. So, you can imagine the heat/problems/whatever that Rich Rodriguez would get had he recruited another kid from Boyd Anderson that had qualifying issues. It just couldn't happen. While the only similarity between Demar and Kent may be their school, the chances were too low.

Would have loved to him but if there is a chance he can't get on the field, then there was no point of recruiting him. Thanks for the update Tom.

Yeah, but how many can they actually sign?  How come I don't have a convenient breakdown of their expected roster for the 2011 season?  Take a cue from MGoBlog "Conquest Chronicles!"  Anyone can cut and paste the current roster...

Seriously, MGoBlog is amazing next to the conglomerate  at SB Nation and even the big boys at ESPN or Yahoo.

I think a lot of these kids are talking about signing with USC because Kiffin is selling them as being untouchable, but when those sanctions are upheld I fully expect most of these verbals to disappear.  Right now, Kiffin really seems to be selling USC hard, and I'm guessing some of these kids like the extra media attention the Trojans are getting.  Kind of reminds me of those old FSU and Miami teams - they were viewed as "bad boys", so saying you were going there gave you a little cachet.  But when the reality sets in that you won't be going to a bowl game and it is highly likely that you will experience some lean years due to scholarship reductions, 17-year-old kids will change their minds pretty quickly.

after the sanctions and heat USC has taken that they can still get top notch guys to travel across the country.  Still a long way from signing day but still crazy to me that these recruits can't see the bullshit flowing out of USC.

Even if he were to qualify easily, I doubt he would be too interested in Michigan - not after the Demar Dorsey debacle.  I imagine there are some bridges to repair between Michigan and Boyd Anderson.

If Turene's grades are suspect enough that we didn't offer him, I'm surprised that USC did.  With their hefty per year signing restrictions, they cannot afford for a player to sign and not qualify.  Their classes will be thin as it is.

Not sure what Kiffin is worried about the class size.  According to ESPN he just took a verbal from a long snapper.  I think if I was in USC's position I would try to find a walk-on vs. schollie for that.
