TomVH: Allan Wasonga update

Submitted by TomVH on
2011 RB Allan Wasonga doesn't have a Michigan offer yet, but he's been in contact with Tony Gibson quite a bit. Wasonga told me he's going to try to make it in for Junior day this weekend, but probably won't be able to. The coaches have told him that once they get his junior film, and he takes a visit on campus, he is likely to see his offer extended. Allan is from West Virginia, so he's familiar with Rich Rod, and the offense. He said that his level of interest is high, and that he thinks he could make a big impact early on if he chose Michigan. Here's film from his sophomore year. He should have his junior highlights up by the end of the week:

I went searching for some Junior year tape of Wasonga, and came across this funny/random/interesting comment about him on the message board of an opposing team.
"I don't know if it's his stature, speed, and number, but he reminds me a lot of Garrett Wolfe... with some slippery moves not too unlike Fitzgerald Touissant from the '09 class. The kid definetly has a style all his own though. And not bad Sophomore year film, that's for sure!! Dick Rod's gotta be drooling watching that highlight reel..."

Wasonga has said in another interview that a) he thinks he'd be better off running out of the I-formation, and b) he's not interested in coming to Michigan.

Yeah, that article sounds weird, to be honest. It almost sounds like they're assuming he ruled out Michigan, because he wants to run out of the I. I don't know, I can usually tell when there's interest, or not. You're right, though it's hard to tell if they're just telling you what you want to hear. He seemed pretty high on Rich Rodriguez, too. He said he doesn't understand why everyone in West Virginia hates on him for leaving, because he had to move on to bigger and better things. If he takes a visit, I think it shows that we legitimately have a shot. ***EDIT*** Apparently he's seen the article. His coach even addressed that it was just a misunderstanding. The guy that wrote the article assumed that's what he was saying, and it wasn't what he was trying to get across. He said it was the author's mistake, and he definitely likes Michigan.

If Michigan is able to land Demetrius Hart and Justice Hayes, we would probably be set at RB for the year. As much as I'd like to have the assurance of a healthy quality RB being available at all times, coaches should be focusing more on the defense and OL. Early commitments from Kevin Williams and Zettel would make the remainder of the process a great deal easier.

Sam Webb mentioned something about this kid in the recruiting roundup the other day. He is sporting a Michigan offer, and his tape is super impressive. He is a between the tackles runner, and his acceleration through the hole is some of the fastest I've seen from a high schooler. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6EO-0djU1w I'd say my top two (three) choices are as follows right now: 1) Dee Hart 2) Jarrell Oliver 2a) Wasonga I'm unimpressed with Hayes's film, FWIW.

Kid looks sick. That said, he's gotta learn to bust his tail all the way to the endzone. You just never know when some safety with Morgan-Trent-speed is gonna run you down from behind.

This looks like poor, poor competition, so I am taking his highlight film with a grain of salt. That being said, excellent feet, hips, and explosiveness. Exciting highlight film to watch.

I'd say give him an offer for sure if the junior tapes look like these tapes 1,900 yards as a sophomore is pretty impressive but could be weak competition, but regardless he still looks good doing it.

I'm in the military and live in Nebraska, and have a friend that is from that area in West Virginia. He was telling me about this kid a few months ago. Apparently his uncle has watched him on several occasions and says that he is a hell of a player. Not really sure what kind of judge he is on talent, but he says that Wasonga just destroys the competition he faces.
