TomVH: 2012 LB Royce Jenkins-Stone Update
November 22nd, 2010 at 3:34 PM ^
Seems sad that an offer to a HS junior in November can be viewed as being late. He must be real good.
November 22nd, 2010 at 3:38 PM ^
he'd be our best instate linebacker signee since brandom graham, who came in as an LB. RJS is a different kind of player though. i think he sticks at LB.
November 22nd, 2010 at 3:41 PM ^
...James Ross was supposed to be the better instate LB prospect next year?
I agree, Jenkins-Stone should be a good one, though.
November 22nd, 2010 at 3:59 PM ^
Ross is probably the better prospect at this point, but he and Royce complement each other perfectly. We really need both next year.
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:29 PM ^
IMO, Stone has about as high of an upside as Ross, Ross is just much more of a finished product at the moment. But like he ^ said they'll complement each other perfectly.
November 22nd, 2010 at 3:41 PM ^
Tom, does he have offers to anywhere else already?
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:31 PM ^
At the moment, no
November 22nd, 2010 at 3:42 PM ^
Is the rule that they are not allowed to recieve a scholorship offer until Aug/Sep 1st of their Junior year? If so, a little surprising that we haven't offered sooner even though from all the talk it looks like we have been plenty interested, what with him visiting a few of the home games this year.
November 22nd, 2010 at 3:50 PM ^
He can't officially be offered until August 1, 2011.
November 22nd, 2010 at 3:53 PM ^
Ok, I thought it was something like that, didn't know for sure. I guess they just receive some sort of verbal offer until that point.
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:10 PM ^
Correct.
November 22nd, 2010 at 3:44 PM ^
We need both RJS and Ross. Must gets.
November 22nd, 2010 at 3:54 PM ^
I think Gant out of Ohio would be huge too, especially since his dad played at UM and his godfather is Woodson. Hopefully they can cure that terrible affliction he has that causes him to root for tOSU.
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:33 PM ^
Wormley-Gant-Ross-Stone-Richardson-O'Brien could equate to one of the highest rated defensive recruiting classes we've had since the beginning of the recruiting services.
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:36 PM ^
Who are Richardson and O'Brien again? I think Richardson might be the DB from Cass Tech, but it escaping me at this point along with O'Brien.
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:53 PM ^
Richardson's the CB from Cass Tech, of all the 2012 prospects we're salivating over, he might be the least likely to be blue. He's got offers from Bama, Iowa, and LSU and he doesn't seem very impressed by Michigan, at least from what I've heard. Danny O'Brien's the dominant NT from Flint. I think he's got one of the most impressive highlight tapes I've seen of 2012 prospects
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:58 PM ^
Thanks, the names sounded familiar, but I just couldn't place them.
November 22nd, 2010 at 5:23 PM ^
I would still say Michigan has a good shot with Terry. He really loves Michigan- maybe not quite as much as Royce does, but having so many Cass players on the roster will really help as well.
November 22nd, 2010 at 5:26 PM ^
And all from Ohio-Michigan area. Who says the state doesn't produce alot of D1 talent. Ok, I may be stretching, happy for Michigan, even though I am not from the state.
November 22nd, 2010 at 6:57 PM ^
I think that, regardless of who the defensive staff is after next week, they should be pitching the idea of "revamping the vaunted Michigan defense" to this group of local kids. Get them together if possible and really drive home the prospect of them coming in and returning to glory the defensive unit. Young athletes these days like to play with the best (see: Lebron, and, more proximally, a comment made by Deion Barnes a couple of weeks ago about waiting to see what other blue chip defensive recruits U-M lands before deciding his own commitment). The coaches really need to create a narrative for these kids that paints a picture of a talented class all coming together to raise the Michgian defense from the ashes. The fact that they're all local makes this a lot easier.
November 22nd, 2010 at 8:00 PM ^
I think you can throw Matt Godin in that group as well. He's a local kid, high on Michigan, looks to be pretty good and at a position of need (DL). The more of those guys we can snag, the better.
November 22nd, 2010 at 8:55 PM ^
Godin is more of a 3-tech/strongside DE prospect. Our biggest need lies at NT where Martin will be graduating the year before the 2012 class arrives. To be honest, we have a lot of bodies at strongside DE in the future, and between Talbott/Black/Rock(presumably)/and potentially another recruit this year, we're pretty well set at DT at the moment. Not to suggest we wouldn't take him, though, he's a talented kid with a really high motor
November 22nd, 2010 at 9:58 PM ^
Yeah, I suppose you're right, but of the 7 or so guys who see PT for us on the DL this year, 5 of them will be gone in 2012 (Martin, RVB, Patterson, Segesse and Banks). Roh will be a Senior.
Although we need a DT more than any other spot, we need depth on the DL everywhere. I'm also thinking (hoping) we might go to a 4-man line, which means we'll need 8 guys for the 2-deep, and since some of those guys you mention might get hurt or not pan out, we'll need a few DL guys in 2012 too to build some depth.
November 22nd, 2010 at 10:19 PM ^
I just took a look at those 2 spots (DT and SDE) and in 2012 we'll have likely 5 guys to man those 2 spots: Black, Talbott, Wilkins, Rock, and one more guy from 2011 (Zettel?).
Jibreel Black looks like he should be pretty good, but all of the others are unknown quantities. Getting a good DT/SDE in 2012 is still very important.
November 22nd, 2010 at 3:55 PM ^
Has it been explained to him why there was a delay in getting him the offer? I think I remember that they explained to Wormley that they were being extra careful about player contact.
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:34 PM ^
Stone is talented, but his sophomore film was probably not enough to merit an offer, like Wormley. The coaches offered Wormley ASAP, but the coaches seemed to wait on Stone's progression for this year. Smart move, he's been tearing it up
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:01 PM ^
What kind of offer is he getting, and why aren't we doing everything that we can within the rules to make sure that guys like Jenkins-Stone and Wormley know that we desperately want them at Michigan before their written offers go out?
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:10 PM ^
With Wormley, I believe M was "late" in getting an offer to him because they were abiding by recruiting rules that everyone usually ignores. They had to do this b/c of the pending NCAA investigation. Wormley was apparently satisfied with that explanation...Here, I don't know the story.
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:18 PM ^
Wormley and Jenkins-Stone are two guys that are very important to next years class. I am really excited to see them in Maize and Blue come 2012.
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:35 PM ^
Contact with HS Juniors was illegal until the beginning of September. From everything I've heard, they've been in contact with him since, and like I said above, were probably very impressed with his play as a junior, netting him an offer.
November 22nd, 2010 at 4:50 PM ^
..I threw together from Cityballers tape, I'm just assuming it's easier than scrolling through and finding where he made plays. Apologies with the music...I don't really know what rap is good, I just picked the first one
November 22nd, 2010 at 5:55 PM ^
i like JayZ and Kanye, and the first two WuTang albums were great. Some people like Little Wayne, but seriously, if you have an adjective like Little, Big, lil' i have to draw the line, with one exception - ol' dirty (RIP)
November 22nd, 2010 at 8:07 PM ^
What's up with the dust bowl at 1:00?
November 22nd, 2010 at 9:38 PM ^
No, the dust bowl was around 1930
November 22nd, 2010 at 8:08 PM ^
This internet is really startin to piss me off tonight
November 22nd, 2010 at 8:47 PM ^
Ok I know already the response I'll get... " i know a guy who...blah blah blah"
Anyway, I work out with a coach of the Westside Cubs who speaks with both Royce and TRich often. HIs take, very simply is that TRich is bound for the south (LSU or Bama) and Royce is Blue.
November 22nd, 2010 at 8:51 PM ^
That's what I've heard too (granted not from anybody from the Westside Cubs). I think people are overestimating our shot with TRich just because he goes to Cass Tech. We're certainly not out of it, but we're definitely not the favorite here. We've got work to do.I've heard nothing but blue from Royce, though, I think he'll be a great pickup
November 22nd, 2010 at 9:53 PM ^
Although TRich sounds good, I think midget CB is the position we'll be most able to miss on in 2012. We'll sign likely 3 CB's in this class, maybe 4, and we took 3 in 2010.
Unless it turns out we have a really hard time with CB's in this next class, I'd say he's the one of this early group I'd miss the least if he didn't go Blue.
