Todd McShay "Greg Jones is not a great athlete"
Todd McShay says that Greg Jones lacks the athelticism and range to cover Denard. All I hear is that Greg Jones is going to spy Denard. I'm ready for another 40+ offensive output.

I hope they have Greg Jones spy Denard. I was counting on Michigan burning their LBs for constantly overpersuing, but having Greg Jones chase Denard's shaddow could be just as entertaining.

MSU was overpursuing like crazy against Wisconsin. This worked just fine with a gimpy Clay. But it's why White did this:

There is a pretty big difference between "not being a great athlete" and "not being able to stop Denard." There are a lot of great athletes who wouldn't be able to stop Denard. He is a gifted player and that is why he leads the HE16MAN race.

He is a great linebacker and is going to be a pain in our Denard on Saturday. Hopefully Omameh (?) wears him out like he did Teo. Pros scouts get all wrapped up in athleticism, but if a player is great at his position athleticism is overrated...e.g. Tom Brady.

Don't forget that for the most part Teo was a one man show. Greg Jones is not. He has a decent DL and another very good LB in Gordon right next to him. I don't think we will have as many wide open running lanes in this game. I see Denard's passing as the biggest key to tis game, plus I love the play action slant to Roundtree, just don't do it to Gordon's side.

I might take ND's defensive line over MSU's, and I'd definitely take their secondary.

I would take Ian Williams no problem. I don't know enough about MSU's secondary, but they seem to be playing decent ball, and their D-line owned our O-line last year. Looking at the stats from last year (and I know it is a different animal this year) we only managed like 2.7 yards per carry (or something close to that). If we can improve on that then the O should have a great day. Let's hope that your reading of their D-line is accurate.

I think *this* is where the game will be won. Looking at the big picture, the teams are pretty evenly matched (save for D Rob) and it should be a hell of a game, but our conditioning will prove to be what wins this game. Late 3rd quarter, Sparty starts to fatigue and wear down. Don't overlook the Barwis effect!

I think all NFL superstars are great athletes. Second, there is a difference for Tom Brady to not be as physically gifted and be great than there is for another player to have to cover the physically gifted, and football smart player. Just look out our own Jordan K. Not as gifted as an athlete, but smart, heady player. No way is he covering Denard. Were talking about one of the fastest and most agile players in College Football.
Jones may be able to, he is a great player, but personally I think Denard is in the cant stop have to try to contain category. He will get his yards, just do your best to stop the 15-25 yard runs from being broken for a TD. I don't think Jones or the MSU D is going to shut him down. And if they do then there are going to be huge opportunities for our other players to take advantage of.

Greg Jones has great athleticism for a LB, the problem is he doesn't hit anybody. Which did he say, what you quoted? Or what is implied in the topic post. Those are two different realms you're referring to.

Is an awesome LB. Just because he plays for Sparty doesn't mean that we should ignore that.
The bigger problem is...I don't believe ANY LB in the nation can successfully spy Denard.

McShay showed two clips yesterday on MSU's lack of contain. The DE crashed so hard, Wisky had an easy outside run to the enzone twice. On one of them, CB followed so hard, he took out Jones by himself. McShay's bottom line was that MSU lacked the discipline to contain Denard.

...but I hope he spies on Denard the entire game. As I have been saying all along, there isn't a LB in college football who is going to tackle Denard in open field on a regular basis. If Jones has to focus on Denard, Michigan is almost playing 11 on 9 instead of the 11 on 10 advantage described in "smart football."

It's our O line. Last years Michigan team that played in East Lansing and this years are way different because of that line. I'll take McShay's word for it, but Jones is a great player. This year's line can handle the job and create the space the runners will need.

By the way, the rumor on why Jones came back was (a la D. Warren) that his athleicism was plenty for college, but average at best for the pros...so this kind of jives with the buzz from back in February...I have no idea whether it is true or not, tomorrow will help shed some light on the matter.

You want to know who is a great athlete, though? This guy:
Again, take it with a grain of salt. Jones is a very good LB, and will probably make some plays. But Denard is one of the most dynamic, exciting football players college football has seen in years. He will get his yards, Jones will get some stops, and the good guys will prevail because they are simply the better team and are playing at home.

I want to beat Sparty as much as the next Wolverine alum, but Greg Jones is a wonderful player and athlete. I don't think that they've had one as good as him since Percy Snow.

Greg Jones is a very good LB, one of the best I've seen in recent years in the Big10 period. He reminds me of Florida's Brandon Spikes alot though. Awesome in between the tackles, but lack that superior speed an athleticism. I mean he started like every game since being in EL, and I believe he just recorded his first interception this year? I remember him saying that was his main goal in the offseason on BTN. I also believe that was ultimately the reason Spikes came back for his senior year, and also the reason Jones came back for his. Nobody with his kind of stats and production week in & out, comes back unless there is a knock on him. He will be good at the next level also...but in space... you'll see on Saturday.

To begin with, I actually like Todd McShay. Ok now on to Jones.
Jones is definently an good LB, and he is one of the more athletic LB in the Big Ten, but is there anyone in the country that has the speed to keep up with Denard? I have personally found Jones to be overrated and only show up in games that 1) Don't mean much or 2) Are against team that are not very good or 3) Are against teams that simply lineup and run straight down hill without the ability to stretch the field horizontally.
I think UM offense is balanced perfectly to neutralize Jones. They make him go side to side on the read option, any stretch plays, or any of the bubble screens, and when they do run downhill on him they have the extra TE or RB as a lead blocker to help neutralize or wall him off and create a seam for Denard.
When everything is said and done Denard and the offense are going to move the ball and score points. The defense is what will turn the tide of this game.
