I don't get this move it's gonna be a challenge in the P12
Todd Grahm leaves Pitt for ASU
As an ASU Alum, I am furious with this hire. Fork em Devils.
Go Devils! It should be fun to play against U of A now being that all his coordinators are with rich rod again.
So many tears from the Pitt fans that care about Pitt football. Which is not that many. At least they beat Oklahoma State in basketball!
I live an hr away from Pitts and you are right, not too many Pitt fans. They love the Steelers, but not so much the Panthers. The ones who do like them are furious according to my news feed on facebook. Lol
Mark me down as another one that is furious. This is just...wow. I can't even describe it.
Edit: With all of the joking about how people should become Arizona season ticket holders after RR got the job there, I sincerely want him to beat ASU by triple digits yearly if Graham took the job there. That will actually be a game I watch from here on out, if only in hopes of seeing Graham's soul crushed annually.
For the good of blood pressure, learn not to take Pitt ball too seriousily. Yes every year they'll look good. They'll have a stud player (Larry Fitzgerald, HB Blades, etc). That one guy you think can compensate for some other glaring weakness. Maybe you'll even pick off ND early in the year or almost beat them.
You'll tell yourself things like "Palko isn't that bad, he's mobile after all..". You'll rationalize. You'll make deals like 9 wins (including the Backyard Brawl) will get you a decent bowl. Then suddenly it is late November and you're still fighting to get eligible for the Tire Bowl.
Pitt football is only going to hurt you.
Enrolled in 2008, and since then we've been one game away from the BCS twice (2008 and 2009) only to lose to Cincinnati both years and WVU 1/2.
Since 2009 it's been even worse, dropping our third Backyard Brawl in a row and going to two BBVA Compass Bowls, plus now apparently going on our fourth coaching staff in three years.
Oh, you go to Pitt justingobue? What is the reaction around campus? I have a few buddies who to go to Pitt and they really dont care about him leaving. Said they will suck whoever is the coach. I guess that is a fair assessment.
I transferred in 2010, but my Facebook (probably like any other Pitt student) is a mix of 25% people that really care: these are Pittsburgh natives or people from out of state, usually, and 75% people who show up to Heinz if ND/Iowa/WVU is in town or Pitt is ranked pretty well, these are typical apathetic non-sports fans (or people who don't know we have a football team and are wondering when they can start camping out at Peterson for the basketball opener) and people who grew up on another school.
So...your friends are probably closer to the norm than, say, Michigan students if Hoke left to go coach New Mexico State, in my opinion.
Ya thats what I figured. Definitely more of a hoops school.
I graduated from Pitt in 2001 and have to say that football games are somewhat enjoyable. They suck now though that they moved games to Heinz Field (off-campus). But I just don't understand the move from Pitt to ASU one bit. Pitt has better tradition and Western PA has a ton of football talent. Unless the move was for money, it seems silly to me. Plus, to go to a school that will see a bunch of his assistants facing him is just weird.
Graham said that it was his dream job bc he has family out there and has always wanted to be closer to them. Im sure money had something to do with it, or he realized his "high octane" offense would be suited for the AZ climate.
I didn't catch the part about having family out there. Although, I used to always say that in job interviews in places that I have "family" - that included distant, distant cousins - because it makes you look more desirable and likely to stay in the area if you move there. I think Graham took a page out of the profitgoblue interviewing book.
He claimed to have family in Pittsburgh too. This is his 4th school in 6 years, he's always trying to move up the ladder (though this seems like a lateral move at best).
Pitt players were calling him a flat out liar in a couple tweets today. Read the espn blog post about it for a well informed read--sorry no link, it's on the espn frontpage though.
Cullen Christian's head just asploded.
And Vinopal's.... and Carvin's?
Whoa!!! Well that was unexpected. Wonder what was going on at Pitt that he decided to head out for greener pastures after only a year.
Arizona v. Arizona State just got interesting for the first time since Jake Plummer played the game....
sorry, had to.
I would laugh myself into a coma, if Jim Tressel took that job. How funny would that be???
Graham left Rice after one year, too. He's like a skeezier Petrino.
And a lesser Petrino?
I'm sorely tempted to post a lengthy thread about all of the RichRod-related storylines that will dominate the Arizona-Arizona State rivalry for years to come given that Gibson and Dews and Magee are now at Airzona and that they now work for RR and that they used to work for Graham at Pitt and... HEAD ASPLODE
Not to mention he let the players and adminstration know via text message. What a classless dbag.
IMO he's an average coach, at best! He's like that somewhat good-looking girl that you're dating who tells you she's done with you and goes to date someone lesser. After a few days, you get pissed, not because she left you but because you finally realized how not great she really is/was. That's the worst kind of breakup sorrow - the kind where you wish you would have been the first to leave.
Apparently the Rice marching band agrees with your character assesment:
That. Is. Amazing.
Actually tops the Stanford band's "Tribute to Joe Francis" performed at USC.
You're going to blame a guy for leaving *Rice*?
If Graham installs a passing based offense for the sole purpose of beating Arizona every year, that will be the greatest commentary on Gibson to date.
There really is some great storylines there now. Graham gets to play and recruit against three of his former assistant coaches in the state's largest rivalry? The producers at ESPN just had to fan themselves.
Maybe they'll finally hire Tom Bradley once he's let go at Penn State. They interviewed him a bajillion times.
Uhh, yeah, so if I'm the only one in this boat, a thousand apologies to everyone... but who is Todd Graham?
Pitt's coach. He was only there for one season.
The J.T. Turner of football coaches.
Speaking of former Michigan CBs, Cullen Christian must be really pissed now.
be the coach for the bowl game.
HC at Pitt (hired in January 2011), formerly HC of Tulsa and other various stops before that. Known for a no-huddle passing spread, also known for allowing Tino Sunseri to play football at a college level when two halfbacks would be a better solution or a random internet user would get sacked less.
He was the former head coach at Pitt, he only had this one semi-disappointing 6-6 season there, he was at Tulsa for 3 years before that
Rich Rod gave Graham his start in college football hiring him as a defensive assistant and eventually promoting him to DC. This is a big reason so many of Rich Rod's former staff (Magee, Dews, and Gibson) landed at Pitt.
Graham is a defensive guy. He's also high energy. I've heard him speak at clinics and he's crazy. I'd like to say things wil heat up in the PAC-12 with RRod and him taking over the instate battle of 'Zona but no one really cares. It does have potential for those two programs to be relevant which is what they both aspire to be. Look at Stanford five years ago. They were just another team on the schedule for USC and Oregon.
We're talking about it so it's at least a tad bit interesting.
Football coach at Pitt, he is now the head coach at ASU
Well, selfishly, I look forward to a bounty of 44-42 late-night games every weekend. The P12 has turned into the equivalent of the ABA.
The American Bar Association is one of the finest institutions in this great country. I'll thank you not to denigrate in this way, sir.
this is funny if only for your handle.
Will the last guy remaining in the Pitt weight room please turn in the CARA forms?
so, including the DUI guy and supposing they have an interim for the bowl previous to the real hire, PITT will have 4 different head coaches over the course of 13 games?
Domestic violence guy.
The Stache was fired after Cincinnati 2010, Bennett was interim HC for the bowl. Haywood was hired and fired within fifteen days (domestic violence) and then Graham was announced in January. So, I think that's actually five coaches in fourteen games. Even better...
What makes you think that they will hire only one guy this time?
He had Tusla up and coming too before jumping. Pretty good hire.
Wow!! It'll be interesting seeing him go against his PITT coaches at Arizona.
Rich Rod gave Graham his first opportunity in college football. People forget that is a primary reason so many of Rich Rod's assistants landed there after his firing at Michigan. Should be an interesting rivalry to follow between UA and ASU.
Ironically... Pitt plays SMU in the bowl this year.
Arizona State almost hired SMU coach June Jones; Jones even thought he had a job; then ASU said, uh, on replay, nevermind. Instead, they go out and hire Graham from Pitt.
And now, Jones and SMU play Graham-less Pitt in the bowl game.
Uh, just an irony.
...maybe they'll pull this offer too? Then Jones and Graham can go at it on even terms in the BBVA Boomerang Bowl.
to Pitt then.
I'm guessing Cullen Christian didn't ever hear anything about "THE TEAM, THE TEAM, THE TEAM" when he was at Michigan. Apparently his own impulses are more important than anyone else's.
For those like me that doesn't have twitter...barely know what it is. But find this amusing and want to keep reading: http://twitter.com/#!/Buc_So_Nasty24
Can't you block the public? I mean it seems crazy that I can google "Cullen Christian Twitter" and all of this comes up. If I'm a coach or AD, this is CRAZY!? Can't you at least make it like Facebook where only your friends can read your page?
Since we didn't get Dunn, we should go hard after shell, he's a beast!
"Oooo a coaching change, what recruits can we go steal...?"
I got to watch one of Shell's games in person this year and the kid is an absolute beast. It will be interesting to see what he does. Although I think it'd be tough to poach him away from Pitt. He is a diehard Pitt fan and had offers from almost every big time program and turned them down. You never know, though.
Shell was, by all accounts, set for Ohio State until the Tressel/Pryor saga. Everything out of the kids mouth for the past few years was frothing about how much he idolized Pryor.
I wouldn't be surprised if he heads elsewhere, but it all depends on how fast a new coach gets hired there and who the coach is. Michigan is highly unlikely (I'd set the percentage at 0%) to even get on Shell's radar.
This little nugget has been added to his Wikipedia page. LOVE it.
"Graham will become the head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils beginning with the 2012 season. However, Tow truck ENT founder Oliver Aaron has yet to be consulted on the matter making the hire strictly hearsay at the moment because we all know Tow-truck runs ASU. "
Feel bad for those kids, but the "Hold the Rope" jokes are just awesome:
But what are the "hold the rope" jokes referring to? My Google search turned up a lot of WVU references...which doesn't make 100% sense. Was Graham bring "Hold the Rope" from WVU to Pitt or something?
He brought it here to Michigan and was even painted in the locker room. It looks like Todd Graham adopted it from his time with Rich Rod at WVU and took it with him to Pittsburgh. Now he left the Pitt players holding the rope while he got out of town after one year, and the Pitt players as expected are not too happy about it.
Once Rich Rod got a new job all of his former assistants were going to follow him. I wonder if Graham took the Pitt job knowing it was going to be a temporary situation.
5 bucks says Gus wont stay at Arkansas state
I was thinking the same thing. Gus is probably pissed he took the Ark St job now with Pitt open. This could get interesting.
ASU vs. Arizona rivalry might get a little more heated.
You mean like someone would actually care about it now?
Can Pitt keep a coach? They had trouble last year getting one and now have to look again.
This is for all those players who transferred based upon a coach and not a school
Street has been going to town on Graham too (here's a taste):
These twats deserve the "tremendous" stamp. I hate Twitter generally but its good to see a kid sticking up for himself and his team. Graham deserves to be villified.
You mean the kid who transferred away from Michigan? The one who signed a NLI to be a student-athlete at a Big Ten school only to transfer away after one year? Yeah, calling out other people for not sticking with the program...he's a real hero.
He didn't like the new staff and was apparently unhappy here even before the transition. Hard to blame a kid for transferring under those circumstances. Why stay somewhere you're miserable?
Devin Street didn't go to Michigan. We know you enjoy railing on Cullen Christian, though.
Yeah, that's right. Bad-mouth 18-year-old kids that don't know what the f-ck they want instead of grown adults that sign formal legal contracts and then breach them in order to make a lateral transfer, leaving over 100 kids (not to mention staffers and fans in general) in his wake. Sounds like the way to go to me.
Is Adam Bisnowaty a player we would even pursue at this point?
I just spoke to a friend of mine who grew up in Pittsburgh. His words were "Pitt needs to fire their AD immediately." First, the moron hired Haywood without conducting a background check and thus was unaware that he had been arrested on domestic assault charges. Next, he chooses Graham over Bradley.
If Pittsburgh cares about football, the powers that be there will not allow Pederson to make another head coaching hire.
Are there any coaches left at Pitt to coach their bowl game?
Keith Patterson...I believe.
Ron English to Pitt?
talk about random players that don't play for michigan, could you, yaknow, put it in context. Like maybe his position, year, ratings... or in other words, why the fuck should I care?
This is what I read "Blarny Gimp transfered from Fluffingarph to Weeble State"
Is this guy Pitt's starting Runningback? Is his loss going to affect that team? Why is he transferring? Did he have bad grades? Is he following a coach? What's the story? Are we going to play either of these teams? Will I be watching film of anyone affected by this?
Or is this just Richrod soap opera stuff that I can safely ignore?
As a current Pitt Student, this is very disappointing. Not just the fact that the team was mediocre at best this year or that they should have beaten a mediocre Iowa team and a underwhelming Notre Dame squad but with the fact that he jumped ship after 1 year. When the AD fired Dave Wannstedt (Pitt's AD, Steve Pederson, is famous for hiring Bill Callahan at Nebraska and canning Frank Solich), he initially hired Mike Haywood who was summarily fired only a few weeks into the job because of allegations he beat his girlfriend (high character, I know?). Then he hired Todd Graham and here we are. Other candidates include PSU's Tom Bradly and one with ties to Michigan: Teryl Clark, who may or may not be responsible for Steve Breaston ending up at Michigan. Anyways. Its really tough to see the whole student body and community worked up especially after all the hype and excitement associated with the season after the firing of Wannstedt. 3 coaches in the span of a calendar year...The Steelers have had 3 coaches in 42 years. Its embarrasing and hard to stomach but just like Michigan, we'll move on.
can't stand one another-- supposedly there was some real friction on RR's first WVU staff. On the one hand, this would seem unlikely, since Rodriguez promoted Graham after his first year, but given that Graham left for the same job at Tulsa after year two, and that Rodriguez seems to have difficulty with any defensive coordinator not named Jeff Casteel, I'd say there might be something to this. Once Rodriguez hired Gibson, Dews, and Magee away, Graham may have decided he wanted a job where a major measure of success would be beating Rich Rodriguez every year.
