Today's College Football All-Star Games with University of Michigan Connections

Reminder

The Raycom College All-Star Classic, with Roy Roundtree playing for the Stripes team (wearing number 89; being coached by Head Coach Dan Reeves and wide receivers coach Keenan McCardle; and catching passes from Iowa’s James Vandenberg and Purdue’s Robert Marve - but playing in a red uniform, perhaps as a tribute/throwback to his Trotwood-Madison HS playing days), will be played today in Montgomery, Alabama (TV: CBS Sports Network at 3 PM) Link to the game’s website:http://collegeallstargame.com/

The East-West Shrine All-Star Game, with Will Campbell playing for the West team (wearing number 73) along with ex-Wolverine Dann O’Neill (Western Michigan offensive tackle) will be played today in St. Petersburg (TV: NFL Network at 4 PM) Craig Roh had been listed on the game’s roster, but he elected to train for the NFL Draft in Arizona with Kenny Demens, J. T. Floyd and (strangely) MSU’s Will Gholston. Link to the game’s website:http://www.shrinegame.com/

The NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, with Elliott Mealer playing for the National team (wearing number 76 and playing offensive tackle) along with Rice’s Sam McGuffie (ex-Wolverine, wearing number 81) will be played today at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California and televised on ESPN2 at 5:00 p. m. EST. Link to the game’s website: http://collegiate.nflpa.com/#!home

The Logo Helmet Sticker Question

It will be interesting to see whether the Michigan players will add other schools' logo helmet stickers to their helmets and whether Dann O'Neill and Sam McGuffie will feature the BLOCK M prominently on their helmets.

I would hope that no Michigan player would desecrate the winged helmet with the logo helmet sticker from any other team; but in years past when I've watched college football all-star games, I've noticed that some players "decorate" helmets with other teams' logo stickers.

For example, here's a link to an article with photos of a Connecticut football player's helmet with the logo helmet stickers from other teams:  http://fwgnfl.com/2010/01/22/exclusive-interview-with-lindsey-witten-we-talk-uconn-football-to-east-west-shrine-game-to-king-james-in-cleveland-and-everything-in-between/

That is one of the fun traditions of playing in a college or high school all star game. I would hope that the M players feel free to enjoy the full experience. So long as no buckeyes or sparty stickers show up, I'm cool with it.

It's like at the Olympics.  Kids proudly represent their home team, but they get an opportunity to meet and play with kids from all over, and in this case, kids they hope they get to play with as pros, becoming friends until they're rivals again.  In the Olympics they exchange pins, here helmet stickers.  But the backpack idea is brilliant.  Making friends, sharing memorabilia, and still retaining the pristine beauty of the iconic helmet.

But I wouldn't judge the kids who do otherwise.  It's still The Helmet.  (Disclaimer: Other rules apply to regular-season play.  Yes DB?)

EDIT: Now that I see the Morgan Trent picture, I may second-think that.  I was thinking cute little decals, not magna logos.

My guess is that it's simply because the teams are both playing in brand new systems they play in for about a week.  With too many formations, it would be difficult for the offense to remember; but even more so, a defense would have to know how to adjust to any formation under the sun.  If that were the case, they would have to spend the entire week just figuring out how to line up.

Besides, these all-star games should be more about putting the players out there and letting them play rather than outsmarting the other team.  It's not a test of what coaches can draw up the best plays; it's about which player is faster or more aggressive or stronger or just flat-out better.
