War is a human tragedy. Veterans are survivors of that tragedy.

Whatever the number is doesnt resonate with me. The individual men that I was friends with that didnt come home, thats what I remember.

I didn't see his comment as an anti-WWI message.
Anyway, he talked about the casulaties of WWI. If you think American soldiers in WWI died so we can write in English, you have no idea how that war went.

Memorial Day honors the fallen. Veterans Day honors all those who have served, including the fallen. While it is true that the original date aligns with the ending of WWI, congress changed the holiday to honor all those who have served.
So while I appreciate that you remember those whose lives were lost, Veterans Day is about more than the scope of your comment. Carry on and memorialize the day however you choose though - that's entirely up to you.

On the other hand, there are only 3 hours left in the day. Plus there is already a thread below.
It'll be fascinating to see how this plays out.

asked me this evening if I was a Veteran (they learned about Veteran's Day in school today) When I told her "no" she then had me tell her if there were any Veterans in the family (the answer was "yes", then I named them).
But what impressed her the most was the opportunity to briefly wear her great-great-grandfather's MP dress uniform hat, something I now treasure, a relic from WWI. It was something I received (along with a framed portrait of him wearing this same hat when stationed in Germany as an MP after the end of the 'War to End All Wars') from my grandfather's estate years and years ago when he passed away. As she inspected herself in the mirror while wearing that hat, she learned a bit about what that hat meant to my Grandpa some 95 years ago.
Thank you, Grandpa. Thank you, all Veterans.

Really, I'm not upset with the OP. This is the second time today when a thread went off the front page. The reality is that between the search function and the inability to page down, it is difficult for people to check on whether something has been posted previously. With the volume of readers, and the number of new threads, this problem isn't going to go away. C'est la vie.

Of all the things to be annoyed about in my day - this is pretty far down the list.

There are a myriad of different people on the blog. Some check the blog every 15 minutes or so, refreshing articles frequently and reading every comment. These folks would often times like to think that everyone should hold their standard of record retention and dedication to the blog.
Some check the blog a few times a day, reading the front page, looking over the headlines, and eyeing what might be interesting to read about. These folks sometimes get snagged up by posting something that has already been posted about or talked about.
Some only read the UFRs and pressers, some only read the forums. Some never click mgo.licio.us, some never read the diaries. These folks usually don't post much, just lurk around. If they do post something it has likely already been posted and discussed.
There are even those that skim through a few times a week. These folks rarely ever post and if they do, they would be likely to post something that has already been discussed or posted.

I want to be clear that I have absolutely no problem with the OP. And I love veterans. My father served in the Navy in WWII. My fathe-in-lawr served as a C-47 pilot in the Army Air Corps in WWII. And my daughter is currently serving in the Navy, forward deployed on a Destroyer in the Atlantic. I'm simply pointing out that double posts are going to continue to be an issue until some things with the site are worked out. Oh, and here's a picture of my daughter shortly after boot camp, a couple years ago.

Really, you're fine, you're fine, you're fine. It is great that you were at work and not constantly checking mgoblog. Too many of us are too addicted to media. I'm glad to see you (and others) honoring those who have served, and who are currently serving.
And I trust and hope that mgoblog will eventually be fixed.

Great Lakes? I have never understood why the Navy would put their main recruit training center thousands of miles from the ocean, but what do I know?
November 12th, 2015 at 10:12 AM ^
Probably because some senator from Illinois made it happen. I mean, the Navy's personnel center is outside of Memphis.
But it really doesn't need to be near the ocean.

Had dinner with my wife, son, mother and father tonight to honor my father on Veterans Day. My Mom wanted him to mention that he was a veteran to the waitress because they were offering a 15% discount for veterans. He declined to do so. I've heard him talk of his service only a few times in my life and I think to him it was about more than getting something in return.
Thank you all who have served.
