ToB on the QB Situation

Submitted by MGoShoe on

Over at Genuinely Sarastic, The Other Brian (Twitter) provides his take on the quarterback situation. It's a very compelling analysis and is chock full of insight on Denard, Devin and Tate.

[F]or the people holding the now-obsolete pro-redshirt point of view, and more importantly for the people confused, bewildered and agitated about Devin getting the call when Denard got dinged on Saturday - stop acting surprised.

- - - - - - - - -

...Denard Robinson kept putting in endless amounts of work in the weight room and the film room and the practice field, biding his time, honing his skills so he could one day maybe get a shot. As people on websites and message boards mused about when he would move to running back or receiver, Denard kept plugging away at this quarterback thing. And when Devin Gardner arrived in January, he too relentlessly took to the weights and the tapes and the practice field. And when the eye of the NCAA compelled Michigan to internally tighten up the coaches' access to off-season workouts and practices, which in turn compelled the seniors of the team to take charge and make sure work continued, some players chose to relax. The result? Denard Robinson taking the first snaps in the Spring Game. Some players starting fall camp with blue helmets, having to earn their wings back.

- - - - - - - - -

In the meantime though, this is Denard's limo. We learned a lot about him on Saturday. This upcoming Saturday, we'll learn more. As visions of Pat White dance through our maize and blue brains, one has to wonder if Denard even grasps what lies ahead. As long as he stays unbroken, the future is in his hands. At the risk of being hyperbolic, the fate of the program is on his shoulders, tangled up somewhere in his dreadlocks.

A must read in its entirety.  Thanks, ToB.

Nice to hear perspective from someone who seems to have good information and insight.  I hope Tate realizes that he is still very much needed by this team, and that if he can continue to compete he will get another shot at some point.

My reading of RR's coaching personality is that, as a walk-on who presumably wasn't recruited and wasn't regarded as particularly talented as a collegiate player, he knows he achieved whatever success he had through nothing other than relentless hard work and total dedication to the team. I would bet this attitude was also coupled with outright disdain for other players who might have been more talented but who were either lazier by comparison or entitled-acting. This mindset would of course continue into his coaching days, and I suspect that he sees the latter attributes in TF and much more of his own work ethic exhibited by DR and DG. Tate's decision to take it a bit easy in summer workouts was about the worst thing he could have done, especially when Denard and I gather Gardner were going about things the right way. Sitting on the bench the way he was during the game and appearing to pout just compounds the negatives already sticking to him. I really hope that Tate grows up in a hurry and that he can somehow come to terms with RR's expectations, and that the staff in turn doesn't overtly assist him out the door. We're a better team with an engaged and committed TF on the sidelines and in the game when called upon.

I largely agree with your take, but the whole "pouting" by Tate sounds like a couple of minutes at the end of the game magnified by a camera man and a network looking to generate a story.  I never saw Tate standing alone during most of the game, and he was warming up while Denard was down before Gardner stepped in.  So yeah, Tate needs to mature, but I think at least some of the sentiment is due more to a camera man's decision to linger on an image than the reality of the situation.

I'm not blaming ABC for catching Tate on the bench - that was his own doing.  But I do think that the way they lingered and the way the announcers waxed on it, probably gave it more weight than it should receive.  Just reading the boards here and during the liveblog, people thought Tate completely ignored this team for the whole game, which was clearly not the case.  He made a bad decision to not stand with his teammates, but I also think people are reading too much into it.

Towelgate was no fault of ABC. Tate had to know what he was doing was going to get picked up by cameras, and if he just anonymously joins his teammates (every single one of them, by the way) and celebrates or shows no emotion whatsoever, it's a much less of a story. Now it's fodder for the negativity machine. I don't know what Tate's motives were, but you have to lay blame at his feet for the decision, camera or not. I highly doubt leader extraordinaire Major Applewhite was pulling stunts like that when Chris Simms beat him out and won a big game at Texas.

Did Simms ever win a big game at Texas?  I always thought Major Applewhite was the one who came in and saved the team when Simms struggled.

And my point was not that ABC made an issue out of nothing - clearly Tate did not handle the situation well.  But I will blame ABC for focusing on him and dwelling on the image instead of focusing on the rest of the team and the game itself.  That is their job, of course - to generate some drama for a game that was decided by the end of the half.

but I just don't think of today's TV as having the capability of taking that kind of high road. I wish they would remember that a lot of these guys are teenagers and give them some leeway, but they're just going to gravitate towards the controversial no matter what. The only solution is to give them nothing to feed on (which is where Tate's poor decision comes into play).

Tate would have been fine had he been up cheering with his teammates.  Him sitting there by himself on the bench not only gave ABC and the rest of the media a story, but it took away from what was an amazing day for Michigan football.  'All in for Michigan' is a slogan that everyone seemed to buy into .  The way Tate portrayed himself during the final minutes of Saturdays game I'd say his mindset is "All in for Tate Forcier".  They said this kid was the ultimate competitor.  Tate himself said he didn't mind the competition.  The best thing for him to do at this point is to suck it up, get better, work hard in the weight and film rooms and finish out the year with his Michigan brothers.  Should he decide at the end of the season he wants to transfer then that's his decision. Doing so in the beginning of the season would again show his "All in for Tate" attitude.  Either you're in it with the team or you're not.  Pick a side and put a squash to the rumors because the team doesn't deserve to be held hostage.

I agree that Tate needs to go out and prove himself again to his teammates, and this would have been mitigated somewhat (I still do think Tate being passed over for Gardner would have been a major story irregardless of the media) had he stayed with his teammates.  But I guess I saw it more as a guy taking stock of the situation, of realizing that he screwed up and that he was no longer the big guy on campus and was again an underdog.  Not saying he handled it well, but I didn't read it as "All in for Tate" as it was a 19-year-old kid trying to get his bearings.

It was obvious from Saturday that Denard put in some serious time to improve himself and get better.  I haven't seen enough of Gardner to know if he's better than Tate at this point.  RRod lays it out for people when they come to Michigan - you'll have an opportunity to play, but you have to earn it.

What is most noticible to me is the stark difference in behavior and attitude of Denard vs. Tate.  Denard was supportive last year as backup QB, he's been working hard, has a positive attitude, and seems like a very humble guy.  Unfortunately, Tate has shown us the opposite qualities over the last year.  Let's just hope that he gets it together because the team is much better with Tate as an option at QB.

Nice post, and I agree with the sentiment.  Clearly, DR and DG were more prepared coming into the season and, in the case of Robinson, earned the starting position.  Yes, it sounds like Tate had some humility issues, but at the same time all people talked about last year was how great he was, how he oozed moxie and confidence, how he had one of the more impressive freshmen campaigns in UM history.  So yeah, it went to his head a bit, as it probably would have to anybody else in that position.

But not two weeks ago, everyone who watched the fall practices said that Tate was the clear #2, that Gardner just was too raw and lost out there, that his accuracy was still lacking and his decision making was still in question, which is totally understandable considering he is a true freshman.  But then Gardner strolls in for two plays, clearly looks somewhat overwhelmed, and everyone comes out of the woodworks to say that Gardner has passed Tate because he is just "better."  Well, I don't believe it; I find it far more believable that, according to Tate's own father, that Tate was being punished, and that while Gardner may one day eclipse both of the other QBs on the roster, he is not ready yet and that this decision was a message to Tate, not a promotion for Gardner.

I probably have an irrational fandom for Tate because he led some great comebacks last year, but no matter how much he slacked off in the offseason (and despite veiled references to various misdeeds, none apparently rose to the level that it set the interwebs on fire) it is hard to believe that the accuracy, the command of the offense, and his toughness disappeared over the last 9 months.

Denard will have off games.  Everyone does.  When that happens Tate will be able to step in and contribute.  It has to be hard for him.  Last year he was being put on ESPN and blogs and national news and was the second coming of Joe Montana and now he's riding the pine.  Just keep remembering he's only a kid.  He will act like a kid at times.  He'll get through it.

The more I think about it the more it looks like he's ready to quit. Today on 97.1 Doug Karsch was claiming that TF was really pushing Denard for the #1 spot. Then all of a sudden there's Tate at the #3 spot.  Not even holding a clipboard or sending in signals alongside Kennedy.  So something must have happened, who knows what.

Whatever motivational techniques RichRod is using on Tate, they ain't workin'.   Which is sad.

Maybe this is crazy but if Tate really is the #3 maybe we should redshirt him (assuming no injuries to Denard and Devin).  Gives him an extra year of eligibility where he could potentially be the starter.  I mean he probably doesn't beat out Gardner after Denard is gone but you never know how players develop

Those two are working hard and pushing themselves and not hating.  IMO, the whole Devin RS burning is a non-issue.  Popular and unpopular sentiment has RR on the hottest seat in college FB.  Brandon said his job is safe this year and for this season, so he fully supports RR now but nothing has been said or promised for the future.  Every question Brandon gets is how many wins does RR need etc.

RR has to win now and he knows it.  As we saw Saturday (and prior years) a QB makes or breaks RR's offense.  If RR's head is on the block, why should he be saving a RS for a QB when that QB is competent enough to lead the team?  If he had some job security, maybe he would put the RS on Devin, but if RR thinks it could be his last year and Tate is stuck in some kind of Inception dream within a dream vacation, then put Devin in the game, coach him up to be ready.
