Times change, but what things do you miss?

Submitted by UMdad on
I have been out of school for a decade now, but was in town a few weeks ago to take my cousin (freshman) to dinner, and it occured to me how quickly things change. There were new buildings and some things missing, and I started to think of some of the traditions that have disappeared or changed. I miss the marshmallow fights (they stopped those while I was there) I miss being able to walk into Michigan Stadium and run the bleachers I miss walking up to the stadium and thinking how short it looked and then walking in and being amazed when you walked out of the entryway and saw the inside. I also miss Touchdown's and Mitch's on South U. Goodbye dollar pitcher night at Touchie's...sniff...

I believe you mean Mitch's moved to the 2nd floor. It opened up there a few years ago. My brother's favorite bar was the old Mitch's, and he was thoroughly disappointed with the new one. I went there last Saturday, and we were 1 of 2 groups in the bar on a Saturday night around 11pm - not a good sign for an Ann Arbor bar on South U. I personally don't like the bar, but at least it wasn't packed. Funny story my friends told me when they were there a few months ago. Apparently the whole bar was looking out the window across the street at this girl by a dumpster by Champions/bike shop. She took out a plastic bag, took a crap in it, and put it in her purse. So she had a plastic bag handy to store her shit, did not bother to throw it in the dumpster right next to her when she was done, and then KEPT it. I wish I had seen this because I almost don't believe it.

I correct a mistake with another mistake. That's the last time I mix acid in my absinthe. To top it off, it took me 4 hours to get the unicorn out of my room. And yeah, the new Mitch's blows. It was always last on our list of options, but at least the beer is cheap. Also, I think your shit story deserves its own thread, because not enough people will see this here. If you get negbanged for it, I will post a "Rich Rod to coach Tennessee" thread to make it even.

I too miss the $1 pitchers at TD's and the Beer Pong tourneys that began in my junior year. I miss the Korean Restaurant (name?) near the corner of S. University and Forest across from the Village Corner. I miss the general state of dehydrated drunkenness that existed for my final two years on campus. I miss pick-up games at Crisler. I miss house parties with free drinks, and Bell's cheese fries at 3am. I miss ordering Pizza House on my walk home and meeting the delivery guy in my driveway. My life is good, and I'm glad to be where I am, but I wouldn't trade those years.

I interpret your comment two ways, and I'll respond to both. 1. I suppose the house parties I go to nowadays do have free beer, but I'd call them dinner parties. And, it would not be acceptable to drink 15-20 beers and do keg stands anymore. Besides, I can't drink 15-20 Sam Adams. 2. I realize the OP was discussing what had changed, but I got nostalgic half way through and started thinking about all the things I missed. My bad.

Hot curly-dark-haired girls who "dated" me because I was a goy from West Michigan. And it was okay as long as their boyfriends and parents never found out. Cheap "Ice" beer. Not having a hangover after four nights of drinking.... let alone 1. Skipping a day(s) of classes with zero consequences (can't do that with work now, can we!) Eating Tios mexican delivery on Sunday to soak up the previous week's alcohol in my system

"Not having a hangover after four nights of drinking.... let alone 1." +1 to you. I could drink heavily 5 nights in a row my freshman year (and did frequently) without ever having a hangover. I'm only 24 and feel like hell after 1 night of semi-heavy drinking. Damn metabolism slowing down... That's definitely what I miss most. Oh, and Big Ten Burrito.

Too young for the sexual revolution, too old for the friends with benefits/girls want it no strings attached as much as the men era the kids seem to go for today. All's we got was AIDS (scare).

Here are some questions from the guys in school now. Do you still have to sit in line to get you books and make copies of coursepacks for classes or is everything on line now? Do people still do the crosswords in the Michigan Daily during Chem lectures? Do freshman still walk around in packs of 15 on Friday nights? Are they still averaging about 6 fire alarms a weekend at South Quad?

Are the hot female schollarship athletes still roomed on the second floor of Rumsey in West Quad? (I swear, my freshman year in 1993 the only 4 hot straight field hockey players and the only 2 hot straight volleyball players were there... not sure where they put "the others") Is East Quad still full of hippies, and people who can't stand living in East Quad because it's full of hippies? Do Sophomores who chose to room in Bursley continue to have no social life throughout their 4 years at UM? Can guys still shack-up at Newberry (as long as they stay in the room), or is it truly on lock-down after 10pm?

I miss: Football Saturdays, especially that cool, brisk feeling Brown Jug with friends and Bell's Oberon Sledding on Palmer Field when it still had a hill Making out with girls on the dance floor at Rick's. Skeeps, too. And the sorority formals I was invited to.
