I don't know who noramally does these but I thought it would be a good idea to open a Iowa v Mich thread.
to play football, not to play trumpet
You're an Iowa v Mich thread
I'm pumped, got a great feeling about this. I predict a lot of yelling at the tv this afternoon though.
If anyone finds a link that is working can they please post it? I'm stuck in upstate NY on business and don't have BTN.
Iowa basketball always struck me as a poor man's Michigan. They, too, were a pretty strong program (though not quite as good as us) until their coach (Tom Davis) was pushed out in the late '90s, at which point they fell apart and have never fully recovered. They've gone through a few coaches since then and have trouble filling up their home arena (whereas they've never had trouble selling out in football). They've followed the same basic course as us, but they always seem to be just a little worse than we are.
I could be wrong, but didn't they have a few good years under Alford. I recall them winning the big ten tourney sometime during his tenure.
That was their only tourney appearance under Alford - and they only made it because they won the BTT. Alford was much less successful than Tom Davis. They were an annual tourney team under Davis.
I didn't watch much basketball during the Tom Davis time, but I did look it up and Alford maybe 3 NCAA tourney appearances, and 3 NIT visits. His best year was 05-06 went 25-9 tied for second in the conference and won the conference tourney pretty good year.
While we wait for the game update on CMU and are old friend Trey Zeigler. CMU currently leads Niagara 40-38 halfway through the secong half in an ESPN bracetbuster game not being shown on any ESPN channel... For the year Central sits at 8-17, a major disappointment. Trey is actually having a really decent year but it really doesn't seem like it with the way the team has played and today he's shooting 2-9 from the feild and 1-4 from the line.
I'm sure Zeigler is okay, but I don't think I'd trade Hardaway for him. It's win-win for both schools.
This is going to be a tough road game for us...gotta beat Iowa to keep the tourny hopes alive.
Anyone with live stream links?
Since when do you not have to type your four digit pin with the card swipe to get into the dorm room, though?
That goes back to at least 2005, probably earlier.
That always made for an adventure after a night of shenanigans.
I'm still doing the 4 digit number this year...
No Doyle = No Butterfly.
This is looking like a good day.
Well it's good Stu is starting off well
Actually, I'm a little confused with Stu. He was right under the basket to get an offensive rebound, but before it hit, he started sprinting across the court to defend. I may not be the best basketball strategist, but why would he just give up his ground like that. Could have been easy points as the ball landed at the area he vacated.
Michigan looking good so far up 11-4. Morgan getting some good moves going.
Haha awesome falling tip pass to hardaway for 3!
Excuse me, but thats poetic justice after a weak blocking foul on the other end. Glad to see our three point shooting is back.
Textbook falling-down-slapping bounce pass and assist from Morris to Hardaway there!
I'd give Morris an assist from his stomach
He punched the ball forward to Hardaway. That counts in my book.
3 3's already for the Blue. Starting up hot 11-4.
Morgan looking strong on the boards already.
Jordan Morgan having a great start. Keep it up!
Why cant we play like this more often!! Go blue!
Awesome start, just wish a couple of those 3s would have gone down on wednesday though.
One more freeking 3. Was 3-for-15 really THAT much to ask?
I miss the Rotel commercials.
Very un-butterfly like assist from Morris there
Good start on the road. Love the intensity
This new university that joined the big ten has a weird name.
Mediacom U? WTF?
I assumed it was their previous coach, Larry Mediacom, whom retired after being so successful that they had to rename the court in his honor.
Zack needs to get a little closer to the 3 line
But our guys are getting smothered, when are we gonna get one of those calls
make a wide-open shot?
Following a nice start, JB goes to his hopeless lineup where Smot plays the 5 and gets abused for 6 straight points in the paint. Am I the only one sitting on my couch thinking that Horford should be in every time Morgan sits? Really infuriating that they keep trotting this hapless line out there every game.
That Morgan is playing well enough that we miss him when he goes out. Didn't think we'd see that this year.
I think Novak needs to take a break from shooting the ball for a while.
I was thinking the same but for Stu and Smotrycz.
They're so frustrating. Start the game 14-4 then Iowa counters with 15-4 to go up 1.
Is Iowa going to get a foul called on them anytime during this game? Hack hack hack.
Usually the refs only allow the home team no/little fouls if they are good (see: Michigan vs. OSU at Value City Arena).
Edit: To whoever negged me, in the 2nd half of that game, OSU was in double bonus and only had 1 foul called on them, so the fouls were 10+ to 1 in favor of OSU at one point. They didn't pick up their first foul until halfway through the 2nd half. I don't think it's ever that lopsided.
I guess trips only go for Iowa
Oh come on, Iowa shouldn't be getting these cheap calls
But we really need a big basket from SOMEONE
What is this Teletubby fetish? Every Big Ten student section seems to have one. I don't get it.
Apparently on loose ball scrambles Iowa can do whatever they want...
WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUU
Well this is a pisser, Iowa is in a 21-6 run, we can't hit anything and the refs are sh*t
The refs are a factor. They are terrible. But Smotrycz and Stu need to make some shots.
Agreed. Your not going to won many when Novak and Metrics are missing wide-open looks.
You have no life, go away! Where are you when we win? That's right, the troll goes bye bye.
anyone else having problems with that stream?
Maybe this will light a fire under the team. We seem very flat right now.
... DId we just get a technical called? I'm only watching GameCast right now.
There is no sport in the world where referees have as much control as basketball. They always are slanted in favor of the home team, and they are always slanted in favor of the offense.
That trip call was such a crock of shit, the blocking foul on Novak down low was atrocious, I can't watch it.
Thanks for saying hi from Bolivia!
I agree our guys need to focus and hit a few shots, but Beilein is the reason these guys have a chance at the NCAA tournament
I went to construct a big long response and then saw the point total, I guess I'll just let it go. You must have been picking at this one for awhile.
And Beilein is at the root of their ineptitude.
You're so wrong. Go back about 15 years for your roots.
You give real mfans in ohio a bad name.
Ya Beilein got a T, but with good reason, these refs haven't given any slack to Michigan and are letting Iowa literally run all over our guys
Someone's gotta tell em, right?
Like some maniacal clockwork, here come the ref complaints.
Like clockwork, MfaninOH appears when the team is playing poorly. I look forward to your disappearance in the second half.
From the future?!?!
Technical called on Coach Beilein
Let's see if our bench can get things going
This after Vogrich's near steal. Iowa stepped on the line. Dunk and subsequent tech should have never been.
These teams both look like they want to go to halftime already.
Wow what a play by Stu.
If I were a Spartan I'd be swearing violently right now.
Okunne, McLimans, and Christian at the same time?
Of COURSE we're cutting into the lead...
Hey we were down 10 to Illinois at half and they are much better than Iowa, let's just make some changes, put the starters back in and make a run
And I believe we lost that game.
Intentional foul maybe? How was he going for the ball?
fail of a 1st half
God hates us.
or God did exist, but died face down in a bowl of chicken noodle. Or God does exist and is still alive, but locked the keys to life in his Volvo.
This imaginary entity had a slight change of heart. Perhaps it is a sign.
fuck that shit
Just our luck, this is Fing ridiculous
Heck of a shot to end the half.
Well, we usually play solid defense for at least 1 half... looks like it's going to be in the 2nd today.
Pick up the fucking ball. Plenty of time. FUCK
give Iowa 5 points for that shot
Magic Talking Cow FTW
Iowa up 35-24 at the half.
Michigan basketball is always on the "you suck" end of the Sports Center highlights it seems.
beat the buzzer. I slowed it down frame by frame and his finger tips are touching the ball.
His hand was on the ball when the clock hit 3 zeroes. Actually got overturned.
well they waved off the 3...
3 pt buzzer beater was waved off. It's 32-24.
Feels like Novak hasnt made an open 3 since the Michigan State game. He HAS to get going because thats pretty much his whole offensive contribution. If hes not hiting 3's he becomes a liability on the offensive end because the other team knows that hes unlikely to drive to the hoop. Thats the key to this second half. If Novak (and all the other shooters: Hardaway, Douglass, Smotz, Vogrich) can hit the open 3's... Then again isnt that always the key to every game for this team?
your comment describes just about everyone on the team
I wouldnt go that far... Hardaway, D-Mo, and Smotz have all shown the ability to drive to the hoop and also shoot the mid-range jump shot. However, with Novak, if his shot is not falling then his only option is to drive and pass, pretty much...
Hm, the 2nd half already off to a good start with that 3 reduction.
Big psychological difference between being down eight and being down 11. This game is winnable, but we've got to wake up out there. There's way too much standing around on both ends.
If you're Coach Beilein, what do you say to the team now?
My vote: Leave it all on the court, this is some home-court B1G bullshit, and let's prove these cornhole sonsabitches wrong!
Now let's go score some points"
to go back to playing passionate defense.
We were playing very aggressive, attacking D to start the game. Then, after we got out lead, we sat back and let them get the ball inside - and the fouls came raining in. I'm no basketball expert but to me this is the key.
He was trying to shield the starters from more effing penalties.
Why do Iowa and Illinois not believe in top and bottom margins for their "I" flags? Looks retarded.
Does every pep band in the Big Ten now play some variant of the Blues Brothers, or was I just hearing things?
At least we can say we were doing it before it became blasé.
Hardaway has been huge so far in 2nd half
why? can't make a shot. can't play D. can't get a rebound. play horford over him.
Morgan picking up foul number 3 really hurts. But Hardaway finding his stroke from 3 makes up for it.
Hardaway's feeling the love tonight!
We got a foul not to go against us!
How could Jesse Owens just be #3 on B1G best athelete list??? Epic fail IMO.
Is it okay that I have a man crush on Tim Hardaway Jr?
What in the hell kind of in bound pass was that?
But I'm stuck in the law library right now, because I forgot the game was in the afternoon and I needed to get studying done before hockey. Because of this...
MORE SCORE UPDATES (please :))
and if you're in the law library, don't stare creepily at the kid with the bork bork bork/Hagelin shirt on. Not that that's me or anything...
I see you over there. 39-35 Iowa.
Oh god the paranoia
Tell me about it. Law degree? Good luck with that! :-)
Iowa Mich tied.
Longest. Possession. Ever. Grab a rebound!!
hardaway should touch the ball on every possession
Is this the slowest game in the world? Jesus Christ, let the kids play.
Fouls are starting to even out...about time.
This officiating is starting to become awful for both teams. All these ticky-tac fouls hurt the game, neither team can get into a groove. There's absolutely 0 flow in the game because of it.
These refs are terrible. Some of the calls against Michigan have been attrocious. Looks like Iowa is finally getting a bunch of cheap fouls too. Lay off your whistle and just let the kids play basketball. COMEON
for Tim Hardaway, Jr.
42-40 Iowa. 10:19 left.
1-13 shooting. awesome leadership.
I love Jordan Morgan
The tide is turning. I can feel it.
adjust your pee stream accordingly. 44-42 Michigan.
I hope you're well. I'm mostly slogging through midterms in my neck of the woods. The next month is going to be tough, but I'll manage.
Iowa's coach Steve Forbes looks mad.
SCREAMING NERD IS SCREAMING
so whenever he starts yelling im imagining him saying things like "YOU CALL THAT A BUSINESS PLAN??" and "DON'T YOU TELL ME THAT SALES ARE DOWN 14% THIS QUARTER"
I love the fire Hardaway plays with.
Why are they talking about waiving the basket off at halftime? It's not exactly controversial. The ball didn't leave his hand in time. Saying things like "if they're allowed to have this basket" is ridiculous. Sorry, if players shoot around shots were allowed to count while the game wasn't going on the score would be a lot higher too.
i thought the replay was inconclusive given the angle. too close to wave off, imo. but i'll take it.
Ed Hightower will never pass up an opportunity to impact the outcome of a game.
Fair enough. I didn't see any space between the Iowa players fingers and the ball with 0.0 on the clock, so I thought it was cut and dry. I will admit it was extremely close.
Hardaway and Morris are the leaders of this team, not Douglass and Novak.
Novak is absolutely an emotional leader.
Hardaway's showing way more emotion than Novak right now.
I love the passion we see out of the young guys like D Mo and THJ, these two are going to special for us the next couple years.
If it wasn't for Jared Sullinger I think this kid would be the freshman of the year. Every game he gets better, the sky is the limit for this kid. Wouldn't be surprised if he was a multi-year All Big Ten player.
I also love Tim Hardaway
I have a secret man-crush on the whole team. Even the third-stringers.
morris to hardaway...F*** yes
This team could be ridiculous next year and the year after.
JR with the MONSTER dunk!
O my, some of these fast break dunks off Morris's feeds are sick!
Morris and Hardaway are going to be fun to watch over the next few years and that is understating it.
Don't forget Morgan. That is a dynamite trio.
That was awesome!!!!
TIM HARDAWAY, JR. IS RIDICULOUS!
"DADDY NEVER DID THAT!" - quote of the year? This announcing duo just completely redeemd themeselves.
if UM could get any consistent production out of smotrycz, mclimans or horford, this team would be so much better. any time morgan is out of the lineup, the quality of play plummets.
They'll be a lot better next year. Morgan and Hardaway are far exceeding the expectations that any freshman have. Smotrycz and co. play like you expect freshmen to play.
hardaway and morgan have indeed exceeded expectations. but i expected more out of smotrycz, given all the hype. he's a much slower player and worse ball handler than i anticipated.
Sweet dish from Morris and.... BOOOOYA!!!!!
53-46 Michigan. 6:27 left. Hardaway gives the annoying husks of corn fucks the business with a monster dunk and 1.
It's ever so nice to have a point who can run the break and a guy next to him who can finish.
This team was almost great this year, I'm imagining a team of stars in two years
don't look now, but that may be Hardaway's new nickname. the butterfly and moth spreadin their wings in the backcourt.
i really hate that butterfly dude announcer. glad he's not there today.
That was a amazing. Such a great dunk.
Novak: 4 fouls, 4 attempted charges taken
Really a crappy way to be on the verge of fouling out.
He has played solid D, rebounded very well for a guard and his 5 points at the end of the MSU game sealed our victory.
Want to complain about someone, how about Smot? He has gone from being terrible on D and solid on O to simply hurting us every time he touches the floor. I like the kid's potential, but man they need to put Horford out there when Morgan sits.
I tuned in to watch the refs but a basketball game broke out.
I really wish we would stop fouling on every possession.
I will never want to hear a whistle ever again after this game?
I know people say this all the time but I really can't remember the last time I've seen so many fouls called in a game.
these teams are ranked 270 and 342 in getting to the line.
could they make their fonts any smaller? what, is the deal, with that?
Hitting our free throws today...good to see. Giving up layups every possession...not so much.
Time and score por favor (at least I rhyme... lime)
63-63 1:57 to go, Iowa ball
Needless to say but Stu is having a bad day
65-63 Iowa. 43.7 left. M ball.
Marble totally got away with a walk the previous trip.
These fouls are making me want to pull my hair out, good lord. Also, Morgan still has a lot of work to do on his ball handling skills. It seems like everytime he puts the ball on the deck it's either stolen or he turns it over.
say "rub his man down low" WTF does that mean?
They have killed us on the offensive glass today good lord.
make something happin' cap'ain
Icing the free-throw shooter?
Didn't know a team could call time out during the free throws of the opposing team. Surprised it doesn't happen more.
so clutch. love how this team has developed.
That's what she said.
what the hell happened to novak and douglass. both play absolutely scared now.
65-65, to OT.
Over/under on the number of players fouling out in OT: 2.5
Come on boys 5 good minutes of ball and hopefully get out of there with a W.
Damn this is a good game and Hardaway is my Denard of basketball
Novak or Douglass need to step up in OT right now and hit some shots.
The upperclassmen need to pick their games up and help the youngsters out.
Why no TO there?
I don't get why Michigan doesn't pressure the ball when there is so little time remaining?!!! Look at what happened against tSIO in the B1G tourney last year....I don't know about anyone else but watching Iowa bring the ball up the floor with no pressure reminded me of that situation.
I had to leave the house to meet friends for dinner, but I guess I'm not going yet and I'll be late.
If only I had the big ten network. Espn gamecast just isn't good enough.
get him out. he's a zero on O right now and getting abused on D. get horford in there.
Got your wish.
(I finally remembered GameTracker, because I am stupid.)
God, Novak is soooo broke. Welcome to the scoring column Zach. Jesus and you just blow a lay up.
Needs to step up.
ugh. thanks for the rebound though
Trading baskets. Mhmm.
nice no call you bastard!
worst layup shooting team in the history of basketball!
73-69 Michigan with two FT's on the way for Morris. 1:24 left.
gah free throws
novak is out of the game. another horrible call though.
whateva. up 4 with 1:04 remaining
Geeze, what a night
Is it bad that i'm happy Novak just fouled out? I'm not trying to hate, but today was not his best game.
2? Is that telling, or have we literally not subbed more than a single person (given the 2) out?
A bunch of bench players have seen a good amount of time. Very unproductive.
11 different guys have played. and it doesn't help the smotrycz' game has dwindled to nothingness. and novak. and douglass.
73-72 Michigan 18.4 Left. M ball.
has got to send that crap into the third row. that's a frickin guard.
edit: I'm dumb, wrong player
Please make these, please make these, please make these.
Whoever put the foul out line at 2.5 for OT, well done
i don't get why beilein never puts on a token press. make them burn 5 secs bringing the ball up. game would be over if he did that right now.
tsio b10 tourney last year... :( dah
it's all the time. the whole allowing a team to roll the ball to half court really bugs the crap out of me.
Why they thought there was a foul in this game...
75-72 6 seconds left, Iowa ball.
Go Blue... let's finish it.
75-72 M Wins.
Solid defense, now!
TIMMMAY... Player of the game... he was on fire.
And, 79% on the Free Throws! Way to go, men!
Tim Hardaway JR!!! special thanks also to morris and morgan. everybody else, you walking back to AA. and that goes double for you douglass and novak.
Let's go! Good win, hopefully we can win out the rest of the regular season.
Not the best D there on the last D stand but found a way to win and keep those slim tourney hopes alive! Go BLUE!
My heart cannot take many more of those games, good game though boys
Just to have the opportunity to go through it every game the rest of the season.
Could we show up for the whole first half next time? Okthanxbye.
that Michigan squeeked out the win WTF kind of defense was that at the end. Letting them shoot 2 wide open 3's like we just didn't want to foul. Reminds me of the OSU game last year when we got burned. But we won, so Go Blue!
The dream is still alive!!!
Am I the only one that missed the ending b/c the BTN went black?
As soon as the clock hits 0:00, everyone gets positive and hopeful and praises the team. I love it. I got jittery too, boys
GameTracker sure knows how to make the ball bounce around and look like it's going in, don't they? Did that last 3 look close on TV? I'm not sure who decides the bouncing or how
they had a couple of decent looks but the shots weren't close.
The last one might have drawn iron. Barely.
Hmm. Maybe if it hits the rim at all it bounces around like 7 times. Oh well, another little Iowa guy showed on the screen so I knew it was about to be rebounded. It bounced to the rebounder at such an angle that it looked like it went in at first, and I did a double take sort of.
Anyone else on GT notice that?
I mean, if NW/Indy rates him...
We just won a Big Ten road game and a true Sophomore, RS Frosh and a true Frosh scored 68 of our 75 points. The future is bright, my friends.
i can't believe how smotrycz, novak and douglass have completely disappeared the past week or so. Before game 1, I would have predicted that those guys would be 1,2,3 in scoring on this team in some order for the year.
Thank God for morris, morgan and hardaway. all are playing way above my expectations. looks really good for next year and beyond.
really, really, really don't understand variance.
but if you watched the game, all 3 looked scared on offense. it's one thing to be cold, it's quite another to know you're gonna miss before you take the shot.
they're not missing them because they're scared. They're missing them because of random chance.
you haven't played much. confidence is a HUGE factor in sports. yes, even shooting 3 point shots. it's important that zack, stu and smot get that confidence back. not just random chance.
they all 3 played scared today. zack and stu practically avoided the ball the 2nd half and left it up to morris and hardaway to carry the team.
Yea, the same Iowa team who blew out MSU and was extremely close to beating Wisconsin in that building in the last couple weeks. It's a solid win and one we needed. I'm just glad that the next 3 games still mean something and will keep me entertained. Next year is going to be fun.
MSU is probably making the tournament. Wisconsin is probably going to be a 2 seed (hopefully bumped to 3 after we beat them). My point is that Iowa is a tough place to play despite what their record indicates. I don't understand how you can't judge Belein's coaching ability. This team alone was 1-6 in the Big Ten and now are 7-8 with an outside shot at the NCAA tourney. A team that has zero seniors and was picked by many to be last in the conference this year. Yet here they are at 17-11 overall and a few buckets away from having some real signature wins this year.
Yes, last year was a let down. It happens. I don't get why people still like to hate on Beilein. He's a darn good basketball coach and we're starting to see the beginning of his vision for Michigan basketball come together.
Few predicted we'd even get an NIT bid. I think this win locks that up. Now we're gunning for the bubble of the big dance. With our lineup? Yeah, I'll take that. This team is great. They never quit. The keep giving 100% all the time, even if that 100% is not so good on some days, it's still 100%. The fact that they are playing so much better now than we thought is a testament to the coach. We have a young, fun team with an upside so high we can't see the top...
So is it okay to open my eyes and exhale?
The ugliest box score ive seen in a long time.
Hardaway/morgan/morris: 23/33 shooting for 68 points
Douglass/novak/akunne/mclimans/smotrycz: 2/19 shooting for 5 points, 2 points for novak from free throws
made a bunny layup after a steal. take that away and OMG. as if your stat line noted wasn't bad enough.
This may be one of those games we'll point to at the end of the season as a really key win. Major props to Morgan for draining two pressure-packed FTs.
got alligator blood
By MfaninOH if he didn't only show up when we were down 10, and then stuck around when we win. Find some nards with the trolling.
MfaninOH is neg-on-sight.
But my go to neg-on-sight is definitely NateVolk, if only they counted for something.
Michigan stays on the list
that illini W would have looked really good right now. nothin's ever easy tho.
BIG win! Now back to Crisler on Wednesday to play the biggest and most important game of the year. This is our LAST chance to get that statement win which we desperately need to build up our resume. If you are in AA this week COME TO THIS GAME! After two back-to-back road games im sure the team is going to play with passion when they come home to face the #10 team in the nation. Also, the Crisler rims might be nice on Novak..
i expect the shots to fall at home. i don't think people realize how much unfamiliar backgrounds can affect shooting; especially shooting from downtown.
we will need those 3s to fall to beat wisky.
How about the adjustments on the press break from the Indiana game? Getting that ball to Hardaway in the middle of the floor at the end of overtime was super tactical coaching by Beilein.
i can't think of a better coach at making adjustments; both in-game and game-to-game; especially given the youth of this team.
the Beilein bashing gets old. Yeah, I'd love to know why he allows the other team to roll the ball to half court before picking it up and doesn't send someone to rush that ball and make them play it. But I have no doubt he has his reasons and that the reasons are sound. He's coached basketball a lot longer than I have so I'll defer to him. His teams improve through the season. They play better at the end than at the beginning. That shows great coaching. He's recruiting better and better players. The upside on this team is sky high. I look forward to complaining about our final four losses in the future.
The team is trying really hard and has exceeded all expectations. I am looking forward to Wisconsin despite the recent history of being 0-9 against them. Perfect time to break the streak and further increase Tourney chances.
YES! This win may not do a ton, but a loss would have been deadly. Thank you Tim, Darius, and Jordan!
Zack....shake it off. Between the 0-10 from the field and all 5 bad foul calls, it's a night to forget. But hitting both free throws was a big deal.
something few people thought we'd have this season. It also keeps us alive for that big dance. Yes, unlikely, but still alive for it.
