Time to beat Kansas
Im a tar heel fan as well. Awful second half. I picked Michigan over KU in my bracket anyways, so Go Blue!
Cheers to that
get by kansas and we're in the final 4. Florida is struggling with Minnesota right now. We would beat them.
only goes 2 or 3 deep off the bench also. If they get in foul trouble, they are screwed.
2 or 3 deep is how deep most teams go in the tournament. How many effective subs do we have playing against a half-court offense? No more than three. Just because we play more than that off the bench doesn't mean they're doing much more than giving the starters a rest.
*Florida Gulf Coast
Can't wait to beat them in the Elite 8!
They won by 14. They were up by double digits most of the game.
I never really got the hero ball thing. Our offense is one of the best in the nation. We had like 2/3 bad offenive games on the whole season at ohio, at MSU, and Wisconsin in the BTT. Our defense was brutal for the rest but it's better now and is the reason why we're playing better.
Me either on "hero ball". Especially the "6 for 26" reference that must've occurred during a game I missed.
The only times I've seen Trey go "one on five" is when the other four players for Michigan are stinking up the joint and he basically HAS TO.
Indiana game for instance was one where the team was playing exceptionally well, except on defense, and Trey decided to take over the game. While he ended with 25, he only shot 8 or 9 for 25 from the field if I recall correctly, and if I remember correctly his shot selection was atrocious. The 6 for 26 reference was an exaggeration, but it's something we definitely do not need.
Must have been watching different games because the first IU game Trey was the only player we had on offense as a few of the players didnt do squat(Stauskas, GRIIi).
I liked the matchup vs UNC better, They're going to need Morgan to snap out of it, because Withey won't be an easy matchup for McGary.
It seems a bit extreme that he has only played one minute over the past two games. They played McLimans and Bielfeldt at the end of the VCU game but Morgan never budged from the bench. It seems to me like there is something there that no one is talking about.
good analysis... but "huge" Tarheels fan? I don't get it being a UM fan.
a huge Tar Heel fan as well as Michigan fan so he kind of got me going with it. Michigan is still my number one team though. Was already planning on going for Michigan had the two ended up playing next week.
Sorry, but I get very irritated when people tell me they're a different basketball school fan than football school fan.
different at all. I still love all aspects of the University of Michigan. Like I said before my dad kind of introduced me into Carolina athletics and I have liked them since. Michigan is still my go to school.
Alright that's at least acceptable. I know two people that are Michigan football fans and one openly roots against Michigan in basketball and roots for Duke. The other Kentucky. Also an osu football fan and duke basketball fan. Ridiculous.
How does one openly root against Michigan basketball and call themselves a Michigan football fan? That's disgusting!
Easy. You grow up a dyed-in-the-wool Michigan fan living in Ann Arbor with two alums for parents and a rabid fan for a brother, attending big games like Penn State in 05.
Then you go to graduate school at Duke for two years, being just a bit young to remember when Michigan basketball was any good. And you get season student tickets at Cameron.
I've just described my sister. She comes by it honestly, and I'll defend her right to root for Duke even as I remind her about all of their failings.
That's funny as my brother went to undergrad at Kentucky which he loves, and then went to law school at Ohio. He's reasonble in rooting for KY in basketball and Ohio for football. Although he freely admits that UK is his #1 and would never root against them no regardless of whom they played. He also will root for Michigan (where I went) and State (where our other brother went) depending on whether or not they're playing his schools. It's a tricky sports family but my father roots for Michigan regardless of their opponent. Go Blue!
helps that we get 4 days to prepare for them.
Maybe the difference in our rest times will make a night and day difference.
Hope coach Beilein looks at that Baylor film, they dominated Kansas start to finish.
Kansas had 22 turnovers, 11 of them by their starting bigs. I have a feeling Trey and co. will be able to do UNC one better in that department.
the 'hero ball' thing either. burke is our first player of the year since cassy, and some of you are idiots to even go there. be cool. without burke, we would have finished a few notch lower in the B1G and would not be talking about next weekend.
we need to play better D and rebound, and we'll be good.
you consider it, the fact of the matter is that we don't need Trey to go 6-28 from the field. We need his shot selection and overall play to be smarter down the stretch. Probably should have reworded it in the original post.
He went 6-14 against VCU and added four free throws. Hardly "hero ball".
But did you see how he kept hogging the ball and running the offense!? Who does he think he is? Our point guard and best player?
Exactly why we looked so good. That's the OP's point. When other players get more involved, this team is hard to compete with.
However, I don't think there is anything wrong in saying some hope he has more balanced game getting everyone else more involved. This team is most dangerous when Burke gets everyone involved. Burke is responsibile for most of it by finding open guys created by driving and kicking (most of the time). There is nothing wrong with saying we hope he is not taking 30 shots because in the end, when he doesn't and is finding everyone on the court, our team is a legit national title contender.
I personally don't believe the hero ball comment is a knock on Burke, it is just a way of saying we hope the team has a more balanced attack because that is when they are the most dangerous.
Except he specifically critized Burke. He has one of the best AST/TO ratios in the country. You don't get that without plenty of assists no matter how well you handle the ball.
Is this matchup in JerryWorld? Let's hope it goes better than that Alabama contest (sorry to bring that up)
I understand why you have, : -142.
I understand why you have, : -142.
BOO THIS MAN!
Not that Kansas won't be a great challenge, but we've been through fire and brimstone already playing our regular season schedule. Kansas would be just like playing one of the top tier teams we played against in the B10. As long as we come out like we have these past two games, we'll be fine. My only worry is those two games were the closest thing to home games you could get in the tourney. We haven't been good on the road at all.
It won't really be a "home game" for Kansas like today was.
Even though we won't be at home, we won't be on the road, Big Ten-style, either.
It won't be as bad as a Big Ten road game, but I expect KU fans to easily outnumber us and it could get pretty loud. Dallas is within driving distance of Kansas. They'll bring a lot of fans. We may get the Florida/FGCU fans on our side, but I don't know how many of them will be there, either.
I'm upvoting a bunch of stuff because someone is downvoting just about everything! Especially in the UM Women's Tourny Game open Thread! Hey Mods! What's the deal?!?! Anyways, Withey is going to make it impossible to get into the lane. If KU plays man to man, bringing McGary away from the basket and making Withey play extended defense should be the gameplan. As someone mentioned earlier, KU turns the ball over A LOT. And they still play a fast paced game. i think we'll be fine.
Some idiot is definitely downvoting everything for no reason. Someone probably got down voted, so now he's going to take it out on the whole thread.
My hunch is that it's Ghost of Yost. He negged the OP here and over in the Women's BB thread, but didn't favor us with an actual comment.
Is it just me (without researching yet, obviously) or has Michigan not played Kansas in a really, really long time?!
of 2011. Lost in OT... Time for redemption
Oh God I suck. Thanks. Forgot about that game, I thought it'd been quite a while.
(I don't think it was an overtime game though..?!)
It was. Better luck guessing next time.
I'm going to stoop this low because I'm feeling frisky...But better luck to you in your next post at not being a fugging loose butthole.
*(I was thinking of the 2009-2010 game, @Kansas)
I believe you meant "butthurt" and not butthole. And I assume you refer to yourself in the 2nd person.
Nope, Butthole. A loose one. Sh**ty, inane remarks deserve at least that characterization.
and he always seems to throw up slop around the rim that rarely goes in. I'm more concerned with Withey.
We played two teams that are unlike anything we saw during Big Ten play. The Jackrabbits were small and unathletic, and we were able to use our speed to pressure them on every screen. Against VCU, our best defense was good offense. VCU's half court offense is atrocious, and we barely ever turned the ball ever (many of our 12 turnovers were dead balls so they didn't give VCU a chance to run in transition).
So I do think we've stepped up the intensity on defense, but I think we've also not faced a team so far like the ones that gave us so much trouble during the big ten season. Kansas, on the other hand, is a return to the Big Ten template of large interior presence and experienced guard scorers. They don't have an elite offense, but it is a more straightforward one.
In conclusion, I think that our defense is improved, and as ready as it will ever be to face Kansas. I like our chances, and hope we bring the pain. Go Blue. Also, FGCU is my favorite tourney team in a long time. Such exciting bball.
Nice three-paragraph essay. Your fourth-grade teacher would be proud.
1st half KU we win going away, 2nd half KU and we'll have our hands full.
Hate to say this, but KU reminds me of Michigan State. Great defense, rangy athletes, and murder on the boards. Also tuen it over a lot. Going to be a war.
They are similar. They can board well.
I think part of the reason we're doing so well is getting away from the refs that call big ten games. If it was the usual big ten crew they would have let VCU mug the shit out of us, but the refs called it fouls when they reached in as they should.
If Kansas plays against your lot like they did in the second half against Carolina, you're finished. I'd say that about all but maybe 1 or 2 teams left in the tourney.
Except they won't be playing Carolina.
Since when is stating an opinion 'Trolling'? Whatever. I'm well aware they won't be playing Carolina. But Kansas straight exploded on both ends of the court in that second half and them playing with confidence is a scary thing.
We better have tons of fans in Arlington next weekend.
Happy that we have 4 full days to prepare for this team, but this is going to be rough. KU seems to finally be hitting its stride after tonight.
I really think KU always plays well and extra hard against Roy Williams-UNC. I can totally see Bill Self give the "He didn't think Kansas was good enough" speech in the locker room before the game. And they were at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, where they have already played 8 TIMES (!!!) this season, having just played their past 5 games there. It was basically their home away from home. Cowboys Stadium will definitely be filled with Jayhawks, but not like Kansas City. They did look good today, but I think if you take those two things above in consideration, we definitely will be able to hang with them.
Great defense and average on offense without a Gary Harris type shooter.... Mix some zone defense to keep them out of rhythm and make wither defend the pick and roll all day, he is slower than he looks.
McLemore is better than Gary Harris doing pretty much everything. He's had a few off games, but even with 4-5 games of crappy shooting he's still over 50% shooting while making as many three pointers as Gary Harris while shooting fewer of them.
Yeah. McLemore is much better than Harris. The knock on him is that he's a Homecourt player. Struggles in Road/Neutral court games
has a game time been set for friday's game ?
You guys are worrying too much about Withey's blocking. Most of our points in the paint come from transition layups/dunks where Withey's blocking is not going to be a factor. Sure, he's going to get a few, but if both teams play average games our turnover differential is going to make up for the blocks.
What concerns me the most is their three point shooting and rebounding. They usually play with 4 guys on the floor that can hit 3s and most of the games we've lost we've gotten outrebounded and/or outshot from 3. The only team that beat us straight up w/o a massive difference in rebounding/3pt shooting was probably Ohio State if I recall correctly.
My roomate is a DIE HARD Kansas fan, so I've watched almost all of their games...
Kansas is a very streaky team, and when they are off, they are horrible... Like Michigan @ MSU horrible.
Travis Releford is usually a good indicator of how they are playing...
He is an outstanding defender and will make life tough for Tim Hardaway
KU is the epitome of B1G opponent. Like IU with a weaker Olidipo. Tough matchup. We need a healthy Morgan.
but we sound surprisingly confident up in here. Kansas is a 1 seed for a reason, we're probably going to need that secondary scoring we've been getting from GRIII and Mitch to win this one I think
Or just do whatever Baylor did and not whatever KState has been trying
Jerry world here we come!
They got SIZE. I expect Morgan, Horford and even Biefeldt to play if needed. Burke will be the smallest player on the court and I don't know how effective getting in the lane and dropping a floater will be for him with Jeff Withey being a giant and all. In the games KU lost, Elijah Johnson struggled. EJ is 6-4, so maybe Hardaway and Burke split that assignment. Just got to make shots and box out like crazy. I hope all the players have Ice Cube and Juvenille in their music librares.
This is going to be a road game, KU is going to own that place. John Beilein is 0-2 vs. Kansas while at Michigan, losing once at home in OT and once on the road. Maybe the third time (with waaaaaaaay more talent) is a charm? The last time I went to Cowboys Stadium to watch Michigan play, I don't remember leaving but remember not feeling very good the next day. Let's hope that this visit and experience leaves us with they joy we were denied last time.
It is only an 8 hour drive for KU fans to attend the game. I expect 80 percent of the crowd to be KU fans.
I think McGary can box out Withey. But I would like to see our other two bigs in the game as well.
So basically it's a coin flip? BiG Ten conference has performed really well in the tourney. Ohio and Indiana are already favored in their games and I expect the MSU / Duke line to be just about even or a point or two in either direction. I am going to go out on a limb and say no conference has ever put 4 teams in the Final Four....could be seeing history in 2013.
Big East put 3 (Villanova, St. Johns, and Georgetown) in the 1985 final four. Hasnt been done before or since.
As an aside, Memphis State (Memphis) had to vacate thier position in the Final Four that year. So Big East had 3 in the final three.
We would probably have to start Jordan Morgan because he may be the only one with the defensive skills to cover Withey. Hopefully McGary will play and maybe he will do the job against Withey, plus he is a much better scorer than Morgan/Horford and we all love to watch him screen.
is not hurt, he will be needed for this game. Whithey (spelling?) is a load and we will need to rotate the bigs on him. This might be where Morgan shows is stuff on the defensive side.
I have this game a L for Michigan in my bracket, I thought we would squeek by VCU and have trouble with Kansas. After seeing that murdering Saturday, we are really good, we can beat Kansas at their game and we can go to the elite 8.
