How dare you call you human. Can a human throw a ball, pick it off then force a fumble and run it for a touchdown while signing an autograph for g-d! Come on you should be banned from this great nation where we have the privilege of seeing him play college football.

Florida made shitloads of money when Tebow was there. It would most likely have made the same amount of money had any of their other recruits started for them. The University of Florida will always make $ no matter who is their QB, just as we will always make $. Apart from the various bowl game payouts, the money from TV is fixed. Assuming that every game sells out, the money from tickets is fixed. Tebow took them to one BCS bowl game. Any Florida team will most likely hit 1 BCS game every three years. Tim Tebow didn't earn shit for Florida that they would have not have earned anyways.

Florida went to 3 BCS bowl games while Tebow was at quarterback, with 2 of them being national championships. They also won all three (but did lose the Capital One Bowl to Michigan in between!). You can't really believe that any other quarterback would have done that for them. Yes, I know Chris Leak (sp?) was the "starting" quarterback for the first championship, but Tebow still got a lot of the playing time.

It's just interesting that his persona was to be above that. I'm in agreement that stars like him (especially those who don't get paid big in the NFL) probably deserve something for their time.

is pretty lame. Charging for "upgrades" when buying autographs is ridiculous.
INSCRIPTIONS:
Tim would be happy to Personalize your item for you "To (Name)", write "God Bless", or inscribe a short Bible Verse of your choice included in the signing fee. Any other inscriptions relating to his on-field accomplishments will require a $25 charge including: "07 Heisman" , "06/08 Champs" , "Go Gators" , "08 BCS MVP".
Charging for autograph options is like charging for the happy ending at the rub and tug.

Part of the charm of having autographs are the unique situations/stories that go along with them. When I was 6, I got Larry Bird's autograph in a hotel in Chicago. The only thing I had for him to write on was a decorative doily. I wouldn't spend 5 bucks for it on ebay, but to me, it signifies the time I walked up to Larry Bird and asked him for a signature. Paying for an autograph kills that dynamic.

All my autographs (and I have hundreds from sports stars) have a story behind them. That is the cool thing about it. Now, most of them are tucked away in my closet, but the memories are what make it special.

I find it interesting that the same article mentions that Terrence Cody was charging up to $150 for autographs (only $10 less than the two-time national champion/first-ever sophomore to win the Heisman/face of college football for the past three years), yet nobody on this thread or in that article made a big deal about Cody being "greedy."
Somebody else mentioned it in this thread, too, but this is probably a smart business plan on his part. Tebow is probably going to be a backup quarterback or an H-back in the NFL, and there's no guarantee how long he'll last or how much money he'll make.
Lastly, when I was reading this, it reminded me of the way the media are treating Michigan compared to MSU. Michigan (Tebow, in this comparison) is doing the same thing as anybody else - i.e. taking risks on players, toeing the line between legal and illegal practice times, etc. - in college football, but who's taking the brunt of the criticism? The established power (Michigan, Tebow), not the underdog who doesn't get much attention (MSU, Cody).
So if you don't quite "understand" why Michigan gets bashed by the Free Press and ESPN but you're totally on board with bashing Tebow for (How dare he?!?!?!) charging money for an autograph session or (this is just shameful!) simply sharing his faith, then I think you're just a giant homer who needs some perspective on how the world works.

It's one thing to be turned off by the incessant media worship of Tebow and the solipsistic weasel who has been coaching him the last few years, but overall I don't think there is much basis to critisize the kid himself on this or anything else he has done.

there are 32 GM's in the NFL, and only one has to believe in the hype, money potential, butts in seats, etc... I really think Tebow will go much earlier than the 3rd round, and he will get a shot at QB. He will most likely go to a team with an already establilshed QB that he can learn from while he rides the pine for a couple years. The millions he will make on his first contract will far outperform any autograph sales he might have. The true value of something is what people are willing to pay for it. If people are shelling out the cash to get the sig, then why do you care? Greedy might better describe his agent...

I agree that Tim Tebow will be the next in a series of successful former Florida QBs to be backups in the NFL. I disagree that any GM will feel compelled to waste a 1st or 2nd rounder. GMs want to sell tickets, but football is a damn popular sport and having a great backup QB doesn't sell as many tickets as winning.
Tebow can't take a snap from under center and takes so long to throw the ball he might as well run it over to the receiver. Without the hype, he's not getting drafted at all.

I'm sure Eric Crouch and Tommie Frazier both wished people in Lincoln were as rapid about autographs as SEC fans apparently are, since both were at least on par (or better) college players than Tebow was, and both had the stink of not being "good enough" to play in the pros. I personally don't have any ill-will toward Tebow, but the amount of fawning this quasi-FB gets is a bit annoying, especially since you could name about a dozen QBs in the past decade who could have had similar success at Florida as Tebow. I hope he enjoys the autograph money now because within a year or two he'll likely be riding the bench on Jacksonville or Tampa Bay and never getting any screen time.

I posted this yesterday when I had a little bit to drink in me, so I didn't really articulate myself well. I just think it's really amusing that his public persona is carefully crafted to make him appear to be above his celebrity and relatively unconcerned with profiting from it.
I actually believe that he and other college players should be paid for their contributions to the massive war chests at universities like Florida...but that's a different thread.
