...which is another good secondary reason for these extensions. We wouldn't be throwing millions at assistants if the head coach is even thinking about leaving. Extensions demonstrate Harbaugh and the coaches aren't going anywhere. We all know that; but not everyone is following it as closely as a bunch of guys on a Michigan blog. So this helps squash that jive turkey noise (somewhat) and can be easily cited as proof for recruits or media or whoever.

Given the timing of these two extensions I'm gonna go out on a limb and say we're being negatively recruited on assistant coaching stability.

Glad to have Drevno and Brown locked up!

The o-line has been talked about a lot by basically every Michigan radio show, beat writer, etc. and a good point is that when you have 3 fifth year guys out there and you can't gain a yard running up the middle, there isn't a lot play calling, or even coaching can do. If we want to reach new heights we needs guys with higher ceilings. Because the last couple batches just weren't enough.

To draw defenses inside to later break outside contain. These plays are stacked to create tendencies on defense that you can exploit later. They work a whole hell of a lot better if your OL can open holes and you can actually produce, but you can't expect much outside the tackles if they don't respect you between the tackles.

Agreed on the stacking plays thing, but what about the creativity?  Halfway through the season, everyone in the stands knew that when McDoom was in the game it was going to be a sweep.  When Peppers was in, it was going to be a QB keeper.  We kept waiting for wrinkles, thinking they were saving them for OSU and then....nothing. Same old plays.

Its like they blew their offensive creativity wad on "The Train" and that wasn't even Drevno, it was Jay Harbaugh.

Kiffin and Cameron made more than $1 million this year and their replacements probably will too. Hell, Nussmeier made a lot more than that here.

Remember those contracts are never structured at the same amount every year. They typically start lower and go up.  So $5 million over five years might be $900 this year.

Just going off what Feldman reported which was "$1M annually."  Kiffin and Cameron are no longer OCs, and Cameron's replacement Matt Canada's salary hasn't been reported, so Drevno is currently the highest paid OC that the CFB world is aware of.

Now, that'll likely change once Canada's contract details are released and maybe if Sark makes more than $1M (Pruitt only makes $1M), but Drevno will still be at least top 2 or 3.  According to USA Today's assistant coaching salary database, there were 12 assistants making $1M+ last season.  All were DC's except Kiffin and Cameron.  The next highest paid OC was Noel Mazzone at $965k and then Lincoln Riley at $900k.

on every thread where it couid possibly be relevant.

People need to be constantly reminded of the reality that the offense was very productive overall.

The three close last minute of play losses were hard to swallow.  But the fact is that M had a pretty strong offense, even though there was no super elite difference maker at even 1 offensive position.  The coaches and players pretty much maxmized given the offensive roster.

What power 5 offense was more productive this year that also had not 1 super elite difference maker?

Some of the young guys on offense in 2016 could develop into elite difference makers going forward (Evans, Bredeson, for example). Higher level talent will come to the fore over the next 24 months.

The Drevno extension is a GREAT thing.

You make a point. I have to say I'm sorry to all of the players I bash for the losses. It's sad but I hate when my team gets losses when it could've been a great ending. That said, glad Drev is back and that Fisch jumped ship. We all knew he was gone sooner or later. Might as well get it over with. Hope the next hire gels with Drev and they kick ass.

Not sure if listing a below average OL is really a defense of Drevno since he's the OL coach.  This is the same fanbase that crapped all over Funk for having bad OLs, has praised Harbaugh and co. for working wonders with Hoke's players, but we're giving Drevno a pass after two full seasons for having a below average OL...with mostly Hoke's players?

Michigan put up a lot of points against bad teams this season and looked kinda average (for a top 10 team) against good defenses.  Is Drevno a good OC?  Seems like it.  Is he a good OL coach?  No idea.  Results have been below average, as you said.  Is he an OC that should be paid as the top OC or a top 3 OC in CFB....mmmmm....not so sure.

...the o-line in fact was NOT "below average."

Was it as good as we wanted it to be?  Good enough to generate that up the middle run game against good Ds that would have sealed games late in the 4th?  Nope.

But it was a well above average o-line.  Name 7 Big Ten o-lines that were better than Michigan's o-line this year.  You can't.  Becasue Michigan's o-line was well above average, albeit far from elite.

Michigan's o-line was better in 2015 than in 2014.  And it was better in 2016 than in 2015.  Still not elite.  But better.

did a much better job this year in passpro than the days of watching D. Gardner get crushed on play after play.  Not perfect, but mostly good.

FSU did just blast our elite D-Line off the ball for 2 yards when they needed it, though. I really really want that in Ann Arbor in the future.  An OL filled with "preNFL players" that can knock off 5 yard gains.

Its going to take a few years, to borrow from Saban, "its a process" but I feel certain that we will get there.

I mean its cute to say that we have "the highest scoring offense" courtesy of scoring fifty billion points on Rutgers and Maryland, but I would gladly trade 20 or 30 points in each of those games to pick up a few first downs at the end of the Iowa or Ohio St. games.

I have faith that Harbaugh and Drevno will get things going but if you really think the offense we had this year is good enough to win the B1G and compete in the CFP as is then I really don't know what to tell you.
