Tim Brown discusses Jim Harbaugh on Cleveland Sports Radio

Submitted by MazingBlue on

While listening to BullandFox show in cleveland they brought on Tim Brown, ex Oakland Radier Receiver, and they discussed Jim Harbaugh. Basically Tim Brown says "I think it is a big, big chance Harbaugh goes to Michigan, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity."

Here is the link http://cleveland.cbslocal.com/2014/12/05/tim-brown-on-jim-harbaugh-i-think-its-a-big-big-chance-he-may-go-to-michigan-once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity/

He starts discussing it at around the 9:40 ish mark. First post here.

If you made this, you are LSU Freak-worthy in the eyes of the Michigan fan base.  This is awesome.

Harbaugh must come here, just so we can keep seeing this.  It's the Mona Lisa of CC .gifs

Unfortunately, this is already Jim's second chance to go to M -- and if he turns the job down, IMO he'll probably have a third chance a few years from now because none of the other candidates appear particularly likely to succeed.

All Brian can argue is that Mullen is the best candidate out there that we are currently discussing. If, for example, Malzahn, Saban, Stoops, Urbz or even Dantonio were open to moving jobs (not that I want the last two listed), each would be significantly better than Mullen in that each has had far more sustained success at a high level.

The point is that while the media and fanbase had a list of best available candidates, we don't know who is really available or who is on Jim Hackett's list.

Look at 2008 - nobody even considered the possibility that we would even look at RichRod. He was on nobody's list.

Look, I'm not trying to be a downer.  But holding out hope that there is an off-the radar Saban/Malzahn/Stoops/Meyer level coach somewhere who would leave his established program for the Michigan job strikes me as kind of delusional. Yes, I realize we got Rich Rod in 2007--but even Rich Rod had turned down Ala-freaking-bama a year before us.  That's not the kind of coup you can expect to pull in any given offseason.

There just isn't much to choose from right now.  That's why Harbaugh needs to say Yes! to Michigan.

Brian's opinion on Mullen is definitely a bit of an outlier.  You don't hear Mullen being talked about as a major candidate for UM by anyone outside of this board. It looks like there are quite a few non-obvious names that will at least get calls before Mullen.

I, for one, hope and think that if Harbaugh turns this down he never gets another chance.  And that's said with no ill will towards Harbaugh.  Even if we are searching again in 4 or 5 years because this candidate doesn't work out, which I don't expect to be the case, we won't be waiting around on the end of Harbaugh's season to make a decision.  This is his last shot.

I did, however, find the same amusement in the "once in a lifetime" description.

Jim can have this job in 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, or 15 years.  It's going to be available again and when it is he will still be Candidate A.

Now, whether he is still at his current demand/prestige level and if the stars will align to where he WANTS to leave AND the job is open, we don't know.  But he's young enough that this is almost certainly not the last chance.

We already know for a fact it's not the first so Brown is clearly wrong.

Right, I think Harbaugh's current status as a hot commodity is why it's so important for M to land Harbaugh this time around.  If he comes to M now, he instantly super-charges our recruiting and likely wins immediately.  But that might not still be true if he coaches another five years in the League and doesn't get back to a conference championship game or Super Bowl -- and he might not, especially if he winds up with a rebuilding project in the AFC.

I thought we knew for a fact that Brandon made his mind up during a spring 2010 golf outing to hire Brady Hoke at the first opportunity.  Or is it a fact that Harbaugh turned down Bill Martin in 2007?  All these facts flying around, I can scarcely keep up with them.

This is so wrong.  First of all, it's entirely possible that this job isn't open for another 10 years, and it's also possible that 10 years from now Harbaugh isn't available or desirable.  He'll be old and who knows how hot his star is burning by that point.  I'm sure Harbaugh will still be a solid HC by then, but people thought Les Miles could have the job whenever he wanted to and sometimes there are just better options out there.

It's certainly possible that this isn't the last time Harbaugh has a shot at the job, but far from a certainty.  And if his dream is to be a long-time M head coach like Bo, then this may be his last shot at that.

As far as I'm concerned, from a football program viewpoint, this is Michigan's darkest hour.  We desperately need someone now like JH who can win quickly and be a coach that will bring virtually the entire fanbase back together.  He will help fill the Big House back up again.  And I can't believe there will be any better time for him now either.  SF doesn't want him back and many of the opening NFL jobs aren't in good places (Oakland, NYJ,Chicago).  If not now, when for him?  Yes, if Michigan genuinely wants him and communicates that while offering him a ton of money, and he turns us down, then I think we're done with him as far as offering him a coaching job in the future.

JH will do what is best for JH.  If it is true he wants to stay in the Bay area in order to see his kid regularly, then I can't fault him for that.

5 years from now?  Say JH is still a great coach and say we are looking again, offer him the job.

He is my absolute 1st choice to be our next HC now.  He's the second coming of Bo as far as I'm concerned, but I won't find fault with him for staying in SF or going to Oakland for personal reasons.

Exactly.  There are a dozen reasons why Harbaugh might not take the job, but none of them are because he wants to stick it to Michigan.  So why should we be mad at him?  If he feels something else is best for him right now, that's fine.  I don't see why that would rule him out if there is a next time.

I discussed Jim Harbaugh to Michigan today....why isn't that posted out here???

Seriously, is it necessary to post every conversation someone with a pulse has about Michigan's next coach?  Last I checked, the qualifiers of Cleveland, Oakland Raiders, Tim Brown nor BullandFox have nothing to do with Jim Harbaugh and/or Michigan.
